The Draft is coming

Well the NCAA championship is over, and it was indeed a fun adventure.

Again congrats to Baylor University.

I have given myself an opportunity to let some of the recent moves marinate before I decided to post on this particular topic. I posted this in another forum I am on and haven't gotten a response, so I hope the wise folks on this board can help out.

What it comes down to is this.
We screwed ourselves. There is now way around it.

We were not very proactive and we got younger but we didn't get better. We didn't get quality in the guards. Well I guess I should say proven quality in the guard. And nobody we draft will give us the immediate quality we need.

I think we have been really compromised at the 3 guard because whomever we start will be at a disadvantage in the West. Be it Fei Fei or Powell, they will be matching up with the likes of Holdsclaw. Which means she will need help. And as athletic at Maiga may be I just think we are at a true disagvantage at the 3 right now. Seattle is better at the 3, Svet/Smith is better than our 3. Tina is kinda a 3 1/2 which means she will match up with our 3. SASS I am not sure about.

We will get better at that position and that is encouraging. Or perhaps Whiz will pull the best 3 Athletes deal and move Brunson to start at the 3 position. And if that was the case, then why work to get a"true" 3 guard.

I am cool with the Aussie pick ups, but I am still not sold on the Fei Fei/Miao signing when we got Powell. I like the move to get Powell. I think she can thrive on the West Coast.

I don't like the free for all, competition coming into camp.

It lacks direction. Makes it look like he has no idea who he plans to pick, or play. And if you are competing for a title you should have the core of your team in tact and should be looking for support to complete your team.

So for all of ya'll who are smarter than me, (and that should be all of ya) who is the starting line up for this team?

Who do you draft?

And what last minute trade can you make to immediately make this team better?

My Starters are

Ticha, Kara, Brunson, DeMya and Yo. Cause those are your best horses. Which defeated the entire purpose of trading Tangie. Other than to get younger.

Personally at the 9th pick, no high impact player that can help the Monarchs would be left. Lots of good 2nd tier players out there so I may consider trading that pick to SASS for the first pick in the 2nd round and a 3rd rounder for 2005/2006. I think there are a few points out there. I am sure the one he wants is Suminski from Stanford. She is not worth 1st round Money, but not a totally bad pick. I think there are a few other points that come to mind. Wecker from KSU and some others. His first pick needs to be a big Point guard.

Of Course by acquiring Powell, OSR, and Buschler, you have gotten really thick in the front Court, and you have players to move. I am not sure If you can trade for the player you want, but at this stage of the game the competition in camp thing needs to be chucked. It won't be a quality competition. If you dont think you can use someone, trade them now. Get some future draft picks at least and get some value out of them.

The other option is to consider a big trade. NY, and perhaps Washington are looking for a point guard. Maybe you can get draft picks and a quality player out of that deal.
I have gone on record as saying to give up the first round pick for Anna DeForge but I think that isn't the most practical choice at this point.

I think the Mystics are also looking for another body inside, that might be a place to start. But I need some help here.

So lets go Monarchs Fans...

What have you heard? What are we gonna do?

For the most part, I agree that while the Monarchs definitely have gotten younger, they have not gotten better. This is going to be a slow-moving team, even with the youth.

I agree with your starting lineup -- my only question would be at the three spot, but someone coming into camp is going to have to win that from Brunson. If Powell or FeiFei is better than Brunson, then the Monarchs are going to be a fine team.

The only glaring hole is at the guard position. I'd like to see Lawson exclusively at the two-guard, so that means they need a backup point, and although Powell played point once in a while at Stanford, that's not who should take that role. Maybe Maoi (sp?) or a draft choice could fill the bill. I'm not counting on the Austrailians making the team -- on another board an Aussie who follows the NWBL closely thinks they are both training camp fodder.

Who is on your final roster? I've got Penicheiro, Lawson, Powell, Brunson, Griffith, Walker, FeiFei, Maiga, Bolton (!), Anderson, a guard draft pick and Grooms on the IR. Wow! That's the first time I've actually drawn up a potential roster -- I had no idea how few vacancies there are. Something's got to give, I think.

What about Mendiola?

I would definitely like to see one more legitimate shooter who can score. That player might very well be Erin Buescher. I don’t know that we necessarily became weaker than the rest of the west, this offense hasn’t been particularly strong the last 3-4 seasons anyway and despite the talent this team has had over that span of time we’ve never seemed to be able to play above being the 4-5th best team in this conference for a majority of the season. To me the Monarchs weren’t going to get immediately better in that department by any trades they made (acquiring Holdsclaw notwithstanding) because we needed to pick up more quality bodies to replace the bodies that we moved from the roster. We don’t know yet, nor do I know if anybody really expects either Chinese player or Australian player to make the roster and immediately contribute. So those are moves that are more fanfare at this point.

I too like the Powell acquisition. I think the fact that she’s got perimeter range, can handle the ball, can rebound and go to the basket with a shot makes her a tremendous upgrade to this offense. Maiga should continue to play her minutes behind and with her on the floor – and have more minutes than she got last year.

If Brunson is starting at the SF spot, I will join the “Whisenant is a lunatic” club. He traded for Powell I thought for the express purpose of getting a SF. Not somebody he would have to convert. Brunson should get 20 minutes exclusively as a PF. Until she starts to show some of the range and touch she had in college, she is not convertible to SF.

I don’t see us getting DeForge or anybody from San Antonio for our draft pick, unless either of those teams have pressing needs or a need to get some cap relief, they aren’t helped in the draft any more than we are – that is, to the point that they’d give us somebody they know we need or that could help us finish ahead of them in the playoff hunt.

I have Mendiola making this team and contributing, I also still think there is one more roster spot open in the back court for somebody who can handle the ball and score, and who plays remotely passable defense. This person could again be Buescher.

Lady is expecting her first child which should be anyday now. The child is expected in April. In fact if my memory serves me correctly I think she is past due.

I don't think Lady would have been back regardless due to salary cap constraints. Mendiola is still a good pick up, and as most of ya'll know I am a pretty big Mendiola fan. For a number of reasons.

First of which, a practical reason. 31,200 against the cap. Any rookie you draft in the 1st/second round will make more than she does. I think once the numbers thin out and the final roster is set she should make more. But then I am thinking like a Californian and can't imagine anyone working for less that 40k. Of course I am making less at this point, but I am digressing.

Second reason... The draft. Who do you feel we could draft that is better than Mendiola at the 9 pick? Not the best Athlete per se the best fit for the Monarchs meaning a guard/pt guard? I don't see much. In fact I will go as far as to say that if she was in the class of 2005, she may be my draft choice. But then again that goes back the trading the 9th pick for the 14 pick with SASS. Cause you can get the player for cheaper.

Third... She has a year in the system.
But finally and most important. I like her, I am selffish and I want her on the team. Don't know how much weight that carries... but at least I am honest.

I am still concerned about Ticha and hope that whomever we get can offer some more support in scoring. But I am still willing to look at moving her to the Eastern Conference. For Future draft picks and a player, or a 2 player trade.
But for goodness sakes it has to be a good trade.

The best trade I can think of if it even happens is Ticha/Chantelle for Tully Bevilaqua, Ebony Hoffman and a 3rd round pick. Tully can give leadership, defense, scoring, and the ability to speak Aussie. Hoffman replaces the big body we would lose in Chantelle. Not sure if that is the best trade in the universe but I am throwing it out there.
Washington needs a point guard, but who could we get in return to adaquately replace what we are losing.

It is a pickle... But If we cannot make a Good trade that gives us what we need, we need to keep what we have. Can't Stress that fact enough.

You know I really would like to see Ruthie get one last shot. I see no reason not to have her in camp. Let her fight for her job.

I don't have a final roster. Can't really form one just yet. Cause Whiz may get some trade offer and mess up the entire equation.

It should shake down as 4 post, 2 Wing Guards and 5 guards with 2 IR.

I will go with Yo, DeMya, Bekkah, as definates. Chantelle,OSR, as potential.
Powell and Fei Fei are the front runners at the 3 guard. But if Maiga comes back with a sweet lil jumper Fei Fei might be in a fix.
Ticha and Kara definates, Mendiola should make the team. Draft a point, and
I am at a lost after that.

Now Hoop Matron is not alone in picking a roster

I have to think if Yo is still on the table after all that has shaken down with this team and within this conference, there has to be a reason for it. She has been on the table the entire offseason. We are not so hard up for another scoring wing that we'd need to exchange 2/3rds of our starting frontcourt to fill it.

I agree to some extent that drafting a player in this draft in the 9th spot does not net us someone who stacks up well against the benefits of Mendiola. But I have not seen Mendiola run this team from the PG spot yet, I also have not seen her against WNBA caliber speed recently either. I know she can shoot tho, I did see that in the limited minutes she got last year.

With all that said I'm not sure trading down gets us a player we can use either although I'm pretty comfortable (potentially if she has a good draft camp) with Whiz drafting Nikita Bell out of North Carolina with a pick late in the first round - I'm not sure she's a first round pick yet but she's someone I could see fitting the Monarchs' system. If Yo does move, Whiz could use the 9th pick to get some front court depth behind DeMya and I guess Chantelle.

If the trade with CT is for Katie Douglas and one of their bench scrubs for Yo and our pick, then I'd consider it. It just seems very very unusual to me that Whiz is still shopping Yo after he did not get Holdsclaw. Something has to be up with that.

Do Not Trade Yo Griffith

Somebody help me out here. Is not Yolanda Griffith still a franchise player? Not exclusively in physical terms but just all around overall talent and Basketball IQ. I understand she is 35 and all that, but I can't name 3 better post players in the game besides her. And until she can prove to me that she can not do it, why risk it.

When did she all of a sudden become expendable? Especially this year when the only players that I would ever consider trading her for is Lisa Leslie (in talent only, because I sure don't want her on this team) and Sophia Young from Baylor and she is only a junior and a smallish, power forward at best.

That's why my eyebrow is raised here...there is nothing about her that should scream "expendable" to the extent that her name has been linked to 3 deals that have been mentioned publically. I am hard pressed to think that Whiz woke up after being eliminated from the playoffs last year and thought that he needed to move Yo. Something has to be up behind the scenes. We may never know what this is about, but something has to be up. I just am not buying that he's shopping her just because he can. After he did not get Holdsclaw, who is a player I would entertain trade talks about for Yo, for her to still be on the table with Connecticut? I don't buy that we need Katie Douglas or anybody on that roster for that matter THAT badly that he's willing to just shop her.

Forget whomever around the league he could get for Yo who might be worth making the trade for, there aren't many players ON THIS TEAM NOW who are as efficient in their minutes than she is.

There isn't anyone on this team as good as Yo Griffith. Hell, there aren't too many players in the entire league that are better...even if she is 35.

Either something is going on behind the scenes or Whiz is an idiot. I am already reserving judgement on that.

After all that has gone on this season with the Kings, if Yo were to get traded, I might have to renounce my loyalties to Sacramento area professional basketball
Reina, I was thinking somewhat the same thing, but didn't want to voice it.

Last year's offense was so focused on getting the ball to Yo or Tan. If he were to ship her off, is he going to change the entire offense he so desperately tried to sell to the team last year??? Without going to the middle, that means we need accurate shooters, and so has the outside shooting deficiency already been solved???!!!!

I can't believe he would seriously consider letting her go. Unless of course as mentioned earlier there's something underlying we don't know about....

The last four seasons, Yo and Tan led the team in scoring and rebounding. Why would you ever trade both of them the same off-season? Frankly, if there was a problem with Yo, then I could have seen a trade with her and keep Tan. I still don't like the Tan trade (but I hope I'm proven wrong). But I agree with other posters that I don't think we've gotten any better (so far) in the off-season.

At least with the Kings, there were issues of salary cap. The only salary cap issue I see for the Monarchs is paying veteran salary for bench players.

I liked the offense he was trying to run, it's hard for other teams to figure out and make adjustments to. I wasn't adversed to the defense he installed either. I think both were changes that needed to be made.

I could have lived with either Yo or Tangela being traded, but I definitely could not see both of them moved in the same season. I was ready to break the team up, because I don't think the team that we've had over the last three seasons was capable of playing to its capacity and but for the grace of other team's injuries and s fades the final month of the season do we even make the playoffs. I swear that we were trying to play ourselves out of contention for a playoff spot last season until Phoenix beat us to the punch over the final 7 games. I think this team gets its head screwed on right once they get there, but then the deficiencies with the offense always crop up. I had four players who I thought should be locks to return if I were GM for a day, everybody else was free game.
