The "Bring Back Gerald Wallace" thread

Why hasn't this been discussed?

Time to trade Artest and Bibby and clear some space for Gerald Wallace... a guy we unfortunately had to make available in the expansion draft. HE'S ONLY 24 YEARS OLD. Could be a cornerstone of the franchise with Garcia and Martin for years to come.

If Petrie doesn't get in on the Wallace sweepstakes, I'm not going to be happy. BRING GERALD BACK PLEASE!!!

From ESPN.com:

Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace will become an unrestricted free agent Sunday after deciding not to extend his contract for another season.

Wallace, who led Charlotte in scoring last season with 18.1 points a game, will explore all options, his agent, Rob Pelinka, said Tuesday.
Wallace made just over $5.5 million last season. He will likely command at least $10 million a season under a new contract that could run as long as six years.
Bobcats vice president of basketball operations Bernie Bickerstaff is expected to fly to Los Angeles to meet with Pelinka shortly after the negotiation period begins Sunday. New general manager Rod Higgins will also be involved in trying to lock up Wallace.
"Rod and Bernie have indicated to me and Gerald that re-signing him is a top priority for their franchise," Pelinka said. "Starting at midnight on July 1, Gerald and I will start evaluating his options and ultimately make a thoughtful decision on what his future will be."
Wallace, who turns 25 next month, said at the end of the season that he wanted to stay in Charlotte. But his free agency will be the first major test of owner Bob Johnson's declaration that he's willing to spend what it takes to be a winner.
Charlotte's $41 million payroll last season was by far the lowest in the NBA.
Wallace will likely have suitors, especially if other top free agents such as Vince Carter of New Jersey and Chauncey Billups of Detroit quickly re-sign with their teams.
Orlando and Milwaukee have salary-cap space to pursue a deal with Wallace, and other teams could try to work a sign-and-trade deal.
Bickerstaff declined to comment Tuesday about Wallace at a pre-draft news conference, and he didn't immediately return a phone call later in the day.
Bobcats part-owner Michael Jordan, who has the final say on all basketball decisions, has said re-signing Wallace was one of the team's top offseason priorities. Wallace has also been praised by new coach Sam Vincent, who was hired last month.
The 6-foot-7 Wallace, who turned pro after just one season at Alabama, rarely got off the bench in three seasons in Sacramento. But he blossomed when the Bobcats took him in the 2004 expansion draft and gave him a chance to play.
An athletic slasher, Wallace averaged 7.2 rebounds and had 144 steals last season while playing four positions.

Wallace turned down an offer last year for a little more than the MLE. Then he had a terrific year. He is going to want a deal starting at the 8 to 9 mil range. We would have to trade Bibby for nothing in order to be under the cap. You said trade Bibby and Artest to clear cap space. you have to be within 25% of the salary before the league lets you do the trade. 25% on both deals still wouldn't be under the cap much less far enough to get Wallace. Only chance we would have is a sign and trade of Wallace by Charolette for Artest maybe we can swap picks with them as well to sweeten the deal for us.

I think this hasn;t been discussed jsut because its generally assumed to be impossible. Charlotte will get him back, or he'll be bought off to someplace for a magedeal or high profile placement next to a superstar. We just have no realistic shot. No free money, no free minutes at his posiiton, no status or success to give us an edge. Adn a wlaking demerit maybe even as the team that didn't beleive in him and let him go. even if his beef were prikmarily wiht Adelman, we still exposed him in the expansion draft, Much more likely he waould like to continue "showing us" than come back to help.

Realistic as heck, but the SLIM chance would be a sign and trade situation IF Charlot saw either Bibby or Artest as assets they want... but yeah not going to happen.

Don't get me wrong, Gerald Wallace is my favorite player in the NBA right now. I would love to have him back on the Kings, I just don't see it happening. We don't have the money to pay him, we don't have any pieces Charlotte would want in a sign and trade, and his career only took off after he got out of here the first time. It is rather ironic that we now have a team where he would get playing time partly because we underestimated his value before (and other similarly talented bench players) but if I were Gerald Wallace I would be reluctant to return to the team that didn't show any faith in me. For that matter, I don't think Petrie wants him back either. He's in a good situation now, it'd be better for him to stay a Bobcat.

I'd love to get Wallace back!

Probably not gonna happen though...On the plus side, Petrie did protect Peeler in that expansion draft, WTG Petrie!!!

I'm over Gerald...yeah, he's grown up, but he's going to want more than we have...AND how many other 6'3-6'7 young guys that pretty much can play the same position as Gerald do we already have on the team??

edit: I dont think Gerald is going anywhere, I fully expect him to re-sign with the B'Cats.

Sadly... I think at this point, the Bobcats have a clearer plan as far as development, much higher potential in their younger players, and a much more exciting future with their cap room, draft pick this year, and strong core of players who are just barely starting to show their skill.

Again, the key phrase... At This Point!

Not trying to say anything bad about the Kings, but let's be honest. Would he rather play for a team with so many positives, for good money, for the folks who believed in him and made him a starter... or for a team loaded with aging vets, bad contracts, bad attitudes, Kenny Thomas (he's a negative all by himself), and who let him go for Anthony Peeler!
