Teams still trying to get Bonzi (merged)

And of course, we'd have the top two picks from the 98 draft. Gotta be worth something, right? ;)

And as for ATL picking up Bonzi, they're under the cap, no? They used more than the MLE on Claxton, hoopshype has his salary at around 6.8 mil this year. Of course, with the Josh's, Marvin, and JJ, they really have no need for Bonzi at all.

Teams under the cap do not get a MLE...it's only for teams over the cap.

They signed him straight out. They don't have a MLE.

And, I know the judge made some ruling changes, but, I'm not sure if they are allowed to sign Bonzi.

If we do get Olowokandi, can we at least... I don't know... censor his face? It's bad enough seeing his ugly mug a few times a year... If we have to see it every Kings game...

Well, his agent is Bill Duffy who is one of the most respected out there and certainly no fool. Should it be a secret that he had dinner with Geoff Petrie  .

Kandi would be a nice back up for us regardless of what people think.

Indeed ^. Olowokandi would help the interior defense.

And the Spurs have used part of the their MLE on Elson, and I believe the LLE on Butler.

Not sure how truthful that rumor is about Bonzi. They have Barry/Eric Williams/Finley/Ginobili/Bowen at the wings.

The Hawks getting Bonzi just isn't realistic. If they did, it'd have to be through S/T. Used their MLE on claxton, and have Smith/Marvin/Johnson/Childress all needing good minutes.

I think they're only paying Elson like 3 million a year. They still have some wiggle room. SMALL, but, more then us. lol

And the Hawks don't have a MLE guys...teams under the cap are not awarded MLE's or LLE's.

You think Kandi would be a nice back up. That's fine. I don't.

My point, however, is that if his agent is going on the radio telling people he's talking with Petrie, he's probably making a big mistake. The only way that actually makes any sense for someone to do is if they're trying to use the "Petrie" card as leverage with another team.

I'm pretty sure you are going to see Olowakandi as our back up center next year. Petrie had discussions with his agent during the summer league and they actually went out to dinner(his agent said this on the radio). I think once the Bonzi situation clears up(which I still say is waiting on the Harrington deal to go through.....if it ever does) we will see movement on the Bonzi front. My guess is that he goes to Houston or Atlanta.

That would be great, he would really help out. I have a feeling he'll be a King next year as well. Hopefully it happens because he would be a great backup!

Yeah, I don't see the Spurs getting Bonzi. They used most of their mid-level and if he excepted a small offer from them that would be spitting in the face of the fans in Sacramento.

Think about it like this...

If he was to sign a MLE, he has to sign for 2 years min...and very few teams actually have much, if anything left on the MLE.

However, he can sign a LLE for one season...or go play for a bad team for a big contract, assuming they would give him that and those options are pretty few in itself.

So...he goes to one of the best teams in the league, plays a season for the LLE, and is a FA again.

Now, obviously, he should go to Dallas as he'd get more time and more of a role there...IMO...but...

His options are getting pretty slim. And, signing for a LLE for a Championship Contender and getting the ability to be a FA next season isn't that bad of an idea.

Doubt it happens, but...

Not to make an issue of this but in the context of the conversation he was having with the host(I think it was Koz) the host said "I hear you are having dinner with Petrie tonight and will you be discussing the Kandi man coming to the Kings" and Duffy then said yes.

If Bonzi accepted a small offer from the Spurs, it would be an admission that he and his agent had both made a BIG mistake in turning down the Kings. Considering the "source" of the rumor is Hoopsworld, it probably has about as much potential as what Phillips himself has been spouting lately.

Okay, then in THAT context, I wouldn't be quite as concerned for him. Thanks for clarifying...

But I still don't think either side of a legitimate deal would be spilling the beans beforehand to Koz.

I know everyone loved Bonzi and I do too. He is one tough player. But don't forget that he missed 30 games this year due to injury.

I don't think that a S&T will go through for Bonzi. The deal would have to be so good that the Maloofs would be willing to go over the cap and pay the luxury tax. If Bonzi got a $8 million contract, that would put the Kings over $5 million over the cap plus add the luxury tax on top of that for the Maloofs to pay. I could be wrong but I don't see any teams out there that would be willing to give up a player of such a value that the Maloofs would go for it.

I expect to see Bonzi get a 5 year mid level exception contract. Holding out cost Bonzi $10+ million.

i don't get what this means, that bonzi wasn't worth the contract we offered him because he might get injured again?

If Bonzi can't get a deal with the way he played in the playoffs he isn't going to get that big deal...period.

It means that no other team is going to offer up a player good enough for the Maloofs to do a S&T. He was worth what the Kings offered him. He is worth much more than what other teams will offer IMO.

The Maloofs were willing to go a little bit over the cap to resign Bonzi but now that they used the MLE, I don't think they are willing to go $5 million or more over. I will be really surprised if a S&T goes through but I think the odds are less than 10%.

Never said he would. But, he can get a 30-40 million dollar deal next year, if he signs a one year offer this season, IMO.

If he signs a MLE for 2 years, he wont be getting anything of that nature.

As I said, I don't think he will sign a LLE for a top team for 1 season, but, it's really not that bad of an idea.

It's one of his best available choices left, IMO.

Problem already is nobody wants to pay years 3, 4 and 5 of a big deal now.

Next year, nobody will want to pay years 2,3,4 and 5 of a big deal.

He's circling the drain - bad bad choice not to take the Kings offer.

Spurs hat in ring for Bonzi

In today's Hoopsworld.com, Bill Ingram brings up an "out of left field" thought involving the Spurs and Bonzi in a S&T with Brent Barry, Oberto and/or Beno Udrih being "redundant talent" that would be bait to make it happen. In part:

On Friday we learned that the Spurs have thrown their hat in the race to sign the only remaining big-name free agent: Bonzi Wells. The Spurs know better than any other team what Bonzi's value is, as he was the reason some pundits began predicting a first-round loss for the Spurs. Bonzi was nothing short of a Spurs killer in the first round, averaging 23.2 points, shooting 61% from the field and grabbing 12 rebounds per game.

The Spurs are not the front-runners for Wells, but they are now officially on the radar. The question now becomes whether Wells would rather play with his buddy Jermaine O'Neal in Indiana, as was originally planned, or play for a title in San Antonio, Miami, or Detroit.

The Kings are open to a sign-and-trade, meaning the Spurs could unload some of their redundant talent. Brent Barry's name has been mentioned in almost every trade rumor involving the Spurs, but more recently Oberto and Beno Udrih have been on the table in discussions, as well.

Hoopsworld? *yawn*

We don't really need much from the Spurs. Can't get Elson or Butler. Luis Scola seems interesting though, they were supposedly shopping his rights. They're main trade offering so far has been Brent Barry, he's a good scorer, and can handle at the point. But, he wouldn't fit in here unless we dealt Garcia (for a big obviously). Barry would give us a legit shooting vet. off the bench, and can do other things.

They'd probably try rights to Scola and Barry. Which was offered to someone (Philly I think) earlier this month. I'd be fine with that, it'd be something for Bonzi.

He could just sign with them for the LLE for a season if he wanted to go to the Spurs that bad...but no way are the Kings taking thier trash nor helping them out.

Fabricio Oberto is 31 (and has been playing since he was 18) from Argentina but is 6-10 and 245 and a true PF. Did not much with Spurs last year, his rookie NBA year, and was signed as a FA as no one in NBA ever drafted him.

Beno is a 6-3 Slovenian who is 24 and has been with Spurs for 2 years. In 80 games a year ago got 14mpg, shot 44% and 75% FT and 41% 3pt. Last year in only 54 games shot a bit better but only averaged 11mpg

We don't have room for Beno, and I like Price and Douby's athleticism and versatility over what I've seen from Beno so far (good shooter, can slash a bit). As does Petrie and Musselman from what I've gathered.

I'm not saying I want that deal above to happen, but if it did, at least improves the bench.
