They were newly married and, like so many couples, weighing the right time to start a family. She was in her 30s, he had turned 40, and time was ticking away.
But for Sacramento Monarchs veteran Lady Grooms, there was more at stake than how to mesh child-care duties with an active career. Grooms is one of the original WNBA players and has spent 15 years as a pro - old for a sport in which competition is fierce. It's hard to be an older player, and harder for an older player to come back.

Grooms initially hid her pregnancy from coaches and teammates last season, then finally confided in Monarchs coach John Whisenant when morning sickness persisted. Sure enough, she sat on the bench the final 12 games, including a playoff run, cheering her colleagues as an unofficial coach.
