Women juggle sports, maternity

They were newly married and, like so many couples, weighing the right time to start a family. She was in her 30s, he had turned 40, and time was ticking away.

But for Sacramento Monarchs veteran Lady Grooms, there was more at stake than how to mesh child-care duties with an active career. Grooms is one of the original WNBA players and has spent 15 years as a pro - old for a sport in which competition is fierce. It's hard to be an older player, and harder for an older player to come back.

<snip>

Grooms initially hid her pregnancy from coaches and teammates last season, then finally confided in Monarchs coach John Whisenant when morning sickness persisted. Sure enough, she sat on the bench the final 12 games, including a playoff run, cheering her colleagues as an unofficial coach.

First things first: Congrats Lady! That is quite a precious thing you have there! :)

Secondly, well that explains a lot about the end of last season

Lastly: Does anyone esle get a little miffed when reading about the special servies the NBA provides the Dad's out there, yet the WNBA provide NOTHING. I mean come on, you're telling me they don't have an extra room in the arena during games where players can bring their kids! Does the WNBA have a players association? Who is in charge and why isn't this a mandated service?

I was SHOCKED to read that they have day care for the father's on the NBA side but don't have anything for mothers in the WNBA. I guess it is nice that they do help them find nannies and all....and I guess too I can sorta see that the ongoing childcare need for the women in the W compared to day of game childcare for the men may make it cost prohibitive, but still...

Of couse, on the men's side it must be so difficult finding good child care services on those budget---oh wait....
