Monarchs notes: For Haynie, WNBA title is redemption

For Kristin Haynie, a trip to the WNBA Finals was like a giant do-over.

With Michigan State, she lost to Baylor in April's NCAA title game. Tuesday, in her first pro season, she won the WNBA title with the champion Monarchs.

"To play for two championships in one year is pretty special," the point guard said before leaving Thursday for her home in Lansing, Michigan. "This one turned out a lot better."

Haynie is among the few Monarchs not headed overseas to keep working. Including preseason practice at Michigan State, she has been playing almost a full year with no break.

"My body needs a rest," said Haynie, who graduated in May during training camp.

Most of the Monarchs started vacation today with family and friends. Finals MVP Yolanda Griffith plans to celebrate the championship in Las Vegas. All-Star forward DeMya Walker has plane tickets to Hawaii before reporting to Samara in Russia on October 7. But first, she's trying to prepare her new home in Houston for Hurricane Rita.

Thanks for the post StevenHW. Kristin Haynie is Great. I got to meet her parents and grandfather after the game last Tue. Great people. I scored a Hayniac shirt finally. :D Is there any other player in the WNBA that has played in the finals both her senior rookie year?

Also.. I hope DeMya's house will be ok after Hurricane Rita passes.

Thanks for posting the article on Haynie, she is a great person. I also wish the best for Walker and her home in Houston. Hope everyone is safe down there. I want a Hayniac shirt....some day

Thanks for the article!!! I also got a "Haynie-acs" shirt on Tuesday from Kristin's mom. So, I had a great night....with the Monarchs winning, SEEING KRISTIN, getting a t-shirt from her mom, and I caught one of the basketballs they threw into the stands.

I'm sure gonna miss watching the WNBA games...*cough* Kristin...I hope next season comes quick.

So, if the article mentioned that Kristin is not going overseas for the winter, what is she going to do until the WNBA starts all over again in late April and May (when pre-season training camp begins)?

I can understand that she is tired, going straight from the excitement of the NCAA tournament all the way to the NCAA Championship and to an exciting and triumphant WNBA season. That would take a physical toll on anyone, especially on a rookie.

But she's going to have to stay in physical playing shape, even during the offseason. Does anyone have an idea what she'll do? Maybe play in the NWBL, which plays from January through the end of March? That league does not pay anywhere near as compared to playing overseas or in the WNBA, but at least it does offer some chances to keep playing until the new WNBA season officially begins. But there are no NWBL teams in Michigan. The nearest one would be the Chicago Blaze. In Northern California, there's the San Jose Spiders.

NWBL tryouts for the 2006 season will begin in San Jose on Dec. 10, 2005. (Click below for info):

I can't imagine Kristin just lounging around for the next six months, so I am going to guess she might want to do something basketball-related until the Monarchs start all over again next year.

I doubt it means that she'll do absolutely nothing. She may just not play competitively which isn't such a bad thing given her propensity for fatigue related illnesses and conditions. Kristin probably moreso than anybody can add more years to her career by taking some time off during the early years of it as she and her body adjust to the rigors of the W.

Kara didn't go overseas and play the last two years, she worked out at the practice facility from what I understand when she was doing her TV work with the Kings.

Her ankle still isn't 100%??????

Thanks for posting that article, Kristin is a very good kid and she's been a pleasure to watch here. I too hope she's not in a Sky uniform next year.

I heard today that Kristen is going to be honored in a pre-game ceremony at the big Michigan/Michigan state football game on Sat. in East Lansing. Don't know any other details. As far as her off-season plans--this is only speculation but I wouldn't be surprised if she isn't involved with the MSU women's basketball team in some official or unofficial capacity even if it is just working out with the team. Her home is maybe 20-30 min. from campus & she remains very close to the coaching staff & her old team mates.

Cool! Let us know how it goes on Saturday, will ya?

In regards to being honored....I was told my a girl who just graduated Mason High School that they are going to retire Kristin's #4 jersey at one of the girls' basketball games...sometime in October but probably toward the end of the month.
