You're in a beautiful cabin in the woods with a gently murmuring stream close by. You spend your days fishing, communing with nature and truly enjoying the serenity.

At night, though, you find yourself wanting a little something to challenge your mind before you drift off to a quiet and peaceful sleep. There is no internet, there is no radio. There is a TV (nice 60" flat screen) but no broadcast/satellite/cable reception. There is a Blu-Ray player, however. You have the ability to obtain your 12 favorite films (never mind how you do it - details aren't important. :p) Hence we have the "TDOS Cabin by the Lake Movie Draft"...

Once we have the requisite number of participants, we will decide the draft order by use of the number randomizer. Once the order is determined, each person will in turn pick the movie they want for their cabin. By the end of the draft, you must have at least one movie from each of the following decades: 60s and earlier, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s. When you make your selection, you will also need to explain your pick. You are allowed to make your pick and then add your explanation at a later time to keep the draft going. All picks, however, must include some kind of write-up.

After the completion of 12 rounds, we will conduct the playoffs with Kingsfans.com members voting in each round until a ultimate winner is determined.

I am the commissioner. Registration, draft order, rule changes (if any), and any disputes/questions will be handled by me.

All movies must have been released in theaters. No made-for-TV, no Netflix, no Amazon, etc. Too many of those films just aren't available for everyone to view and it's hard to expect people to vote for a bunch of obscure films no one (except you) has seen. You cannot pick a trilogy as one selection. Each movie is stand-alone. In addition, you cannot pick a "director's cut" or other version of a movie if someone else has already selected a different version. You can pick a remake, however. NO PORN.

There is a time limit of 24 hours between picks. This becomes really important because of the worldwide distribution of our members. When you make your pick, it is up to you to send a PM (start a conversation) with the next person to draft so they know they're up. I will try to keep the board updated as quickly as possible. If the 24 hours expire, the pick goes to the next person. The missed pick may be made up, but only until your next pick comes around. At that point, the missed pick is forfeited. If you think you might be unable to post your pick in a timely manner, you can send it to another member of the board to post for you. It is then their responsibility to notify the person who is on deck. Make sure you check the lists of selected movies. If you pick a movie that has already been taken, your pick is forfeited. I reserve the right to replace any participant who misses more than two rounds. In the event that happens, the new person will be allowed to make catch-up selections to catch him/her up with everyone else.

The draft will be NON-SERPENTINE. This means if you get #6 in the first round, you will have #6 in each subsequent round.

No trades are allowed. Once you have selected a movie, it's yours for all eternity.

Now, let's see who wants to join!

I'm in, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to insist that I get my movies on Blu-Ray (with a Blu-ray player - don't leave me with no way to watch them!) and at least a 50" flat screen. I will, however, not insist that I be the ONLY drafter afforded these luxuries and will happily concede similar accommodations to anyone who so desires.

We can do that. :)

Hmm, I've never done this before but I love movies so this sounds like it would be fun. I'm going to be in the mountains for most of July (the 3rd to the 27th) with no internet access but if you don't think that will conflict with the draft timeline, you can add me to the list. I'm going to be pretty upset if someone else drafts my #1 movie though... :)

What you'll have to do is pre-rank your movie picks and give them to someone who isn't participating in the draft. They can post for you when your turn comes up. You'll have to leave a list of probably double the number of rounds left when you take off, but it's doable. Or you can arrange for someone to just take over for you while you gone. We're flexible, especially when it's someone who's never participated before.

Hmm, okay. I'll figure something out. How long does the draft typically take?
Hard to know since it's been a few years since we last did one and participants have changed. If we get 16 participants, that will be a total of 192 picks. At the outside, if each person used their entire allotted 24 hours, it would last over 5 months. Of course, that won't happen. There will be a lot of times when people make their picks within minutes. It's the overnight picks that take time, especially when we're dealing with overseas participants. I could go on, but I think you get the idea. It's just kind of an unknown at this point. I'm not even sure when the draft will start, since we only have 6 people signed up thus far. As I said, though, we'll work something out...we always did.

Hey VF. This is Löwenherz

I'm locked out of my account and it doesn't seem to be connected to either of my emails to reset my password. Wanted to chime in on the new movie draft. Can you help me out?

Hey VF, quick question on the rules:

I know you said at least one from each decade, but for the 60's (as that is as far back as you are going) - is it 60's and earlier, or just the 60's? I'm assuming 1960-1969, but I also have (at this point) one movie on my list that was before 1960 - I was wondering if it would also qualify. I'm assuming not, but wanted to check!

VF, you threw in the decade thing just to gain an edge on those of us who, ahem, followed you in birth order, didn't you? ;)
Actually, that was the Capt's idea. :p

I like that idea! I am hereby revising the rules, since I don't think it would have a negative impact.

I'm a big fan of the multi-decade rule! With the extinction of video rental stores, and without a premium cable package, it's often difficult to get access to older movies. But I think it's essential that we keep in touch with film history, and that we desire to know a bit about prior generations of the artform. Unfortunately, the majority of streaming services have done a terrible job of giving the average viewer a broad sense of that history. Netflix used to feature a ton of classic films, but as they've moved into the realm of original content (much of which is miserably bad), they've dramatically pared back all content released before, like, the year 2000. It's a shame.

VF, when the draft starts we may want to have someone on the board designated to help if a drafter is away from the computer for a period of time (like I might be in Alaska when my 24 hour period hits, or maybe multiple). I guess we can see how it goes and maybe it will work out OK to have a drafter assist who isn't up to bat for a while?

While I agree with your sentiment, I just want to point out that Netflix was forced into this situation by the studios.

I think I addressed that:

If all else fails, I as commissioner would be happy to post anyone's pick. Of course, I'll just have to deal with the emotional trauma of having to post a pick for someone else that was going to be mine in a subsequent round. I'm tough, though. I'm sure I could survive the angst. :p

Oops. My bad. I was working off a rough draft based on old rules. It's 12. I think 12 makes a faster yet still comprehensive draft. We can always extend it if we participants decide to do so.. My thought was we can see how it goes.

My vote would be for 20 movies just so I can cram as many different types of movies in there as possible. Also because I think the top of the draft is going to be pretty competitive over the popular choices but after round 10 or so we'll start to see a lot more unusual and distinctive choices which will make the lists all feel more personalized. But I'm up for whatever the group decides!
