First I'd have to say Jason Thompson is impressive... he's gonna be extremely quick for a PF... He is also been the most consistent King thus far... Good shooting touch, and post game is looking alright... and the clutchness! the kings coaching staff are running plays for him at the end of games and he's coming though! very nice! lots of potential there for sure... in fact im wishing he'd start over Williams. Jason could be a starter! its way to early to tell but no red flags so far... just needs more work and mins...

S.Williams has proven to be a tank in the paint but just is lacking so much... he bully's guys around but cant finish... good rebounder but NEEDS to use that size to finish when hes right under the basket... williams could be a good role player, still needs to improve...

Douby is scoring alot! but for some reason when im watching im frustrated with him alot! Defense, turnovers, ect. Im finding it hard to believe hes gonna make it in this league... he does get alot of steals good anticipation and blks but his on the ball defense is poor... i dunno maybe im being hard on him but it just doesn't look good most the time?

Sean is looking great! hes the backup going forward... im looking forward to watching him perform in the real nba style game... with less fouls and a more controlled environment... i have a feeling that he will be even more effective on the next level... show alot in the jungle ball type of game so far...

Ewing is looking like a long shot... nuff said...

Hawes really needs to react faster plus hit the weights more! he had an off night tonight but he's so talented, i wanna see him hit his full potential and not be struggling to reb or get his shot off in the paint... all in all Hawes is a stud just needs to keep building muscle... and if theres anything else he can do to work on his vert jump and quickness he needs to do that also...

the backup point guard #10 looks alright, guess hes a long shot too though...

I agree with almost all of what you said. I think in Hawes case, he was frustrated tonight. He operates best when he has the ball in his hands. He's such a good passer, but tonight, he just didn't get much of a chance to show off his skills. Its difficult to do sometimes in the summer league helter skelter style of play.

Ditto.

I think with Hawes it is good to remember that he can't even buy himself booze yet, so he still has a couple more development years. I think JT could win the starting job, but probably not until mid-season. And as far as Douby goes, his value will show if he gets paired up with a SG that controls the ball...maybe we have him come off the bench with Salmons.

Salmons off the bench - not again:( I'm assuming he's the starter at SF in place of a traded Artest - assuming nothing is gotten in return that starts like a Lamar Odom;)

As I see the starters (or maybe would like to see):

PG Udrih (backup Singletary)
SG Martin (backup Garcia, Douby)
C Miller (backup Hawes, Moore)
SF Salmons (backup Garcia, Thompson)
PF Thompson (backup Moore, Williams)

Of course, it's still too early to say with all the variables in play for the Kings. Plus, Coach Theus has said repeatedly that his starters and minutes handed out is based on game/practice effort and simply who is playing the best at any given moment.

For me, watching the games I am impressed with Sacramento's draft prospects: Randolph, McGee and of course J. Thompson

Randolph is going to be a good SF. He can shoot, pass, and drive. He just needs to get stronger

McGee will be a decent C in the league. He blocks shots, runs the floor and has a pretty decent offensive game

Thompson will be a good PF. I am very excited about his future. I am not expecting too much this season (don't want to get my hopes up), but in the next couple of years he will be a solid player for us.

Saying that I am glad that we chose Thompson. I was glad when we drafted him, but I know there was a lot of people who said "who?" Now they are saying "when?";)

Thorpe on Sacramento's Jason Thompson and Sean Singletary
David Thorpe of ESPN.com weighs in on a pair of Kings.
"Thompson is an immediate upgrade to the Kings frontline as an athlete. They had the least athletic frontline in the league last year. He's got a nice combination of skills with size and projects as someone who can play well next to Spencer Hawes....

I'm excited by the pick of JT. What's not to like about skilled athleticism?
Yeah, I'm ok with the pick of Thompson...I like Thorpe's comment on him 'ice-grilling the Mavs after every dunk' even though we were down 20...when was the last time we had a player with skilled athletism that gave the 'ice-grill' after dunking?? You guessed it, Chris Webber.(believe me, I'm not comparing the two...just an observation. :D )

There are other PFs doing their thing in summer league too.. Marresse Speights is one of them that we could have had. I like JT though, and likehim even more seeing him play more often.

I've also observed that there are many players that we should have taken in the 2nd round over Mr. waste of a pick Jr.

I thought I was the only one that stayed up this late on a work night. Since I don't work. JT looked good, even though he didn't have his best game. I was amazed how many times that the only King I saw on the offensive boards was Thompson. I think a few more sessions at Pete Newell's big man camp would help him a lot.

The dude can really run the floor. I'm anxious to see him on the floor with some real talent around him. I think, with his quickness, plus passing and shooting ability, he could be very dangerous running the pick and roll.

Do you know why Sheldon didn't play tonight? I came into the game right at tip off and I don't remember his name even being mentioned.

Tyrants Observation From Summer League

1. quincy douby looked a mess. how did he score 20 points in the 1st two games
2. spencer looked pretty good. had a couple nice moves with a steal and breakaway layup ending in good fashion.
3. justin thompson can run the floor, but he has to get stronger and stop shooting 3 pointers.
4. singletary is not that good. i dont see how the thread of (singletary vs udrih started). beno is clearly the better player right now. on the bright side singletary does have patience. i noticed that about his game. he takes his time and tries to make the right decision. i would have to see more of him and playing time for a better analysis

overall im not impressed with what i saw last night. something is telling me that we're gona regret not chosing the other lopez brother:rolleyes:

my goodness did you even see the other games? And duh udrih is better than singletary, the OP of the thread you referred to already said that he wasn't comparing how good they were. It's also Jason Thompson

You know another PF doing his thing in Summer league? Darell Arthur :D

Quincy Douby has been scoring a lot but he has to control his ballhandling and decision-making, but overall he's a good person and will continue to develop and get better.

i didnt see the other games. im posting what i saw last night. which was my 1st summer league game.

My suggestion,is comment on what you saw in one game, but don't make blanket statements about what is or isn't based on it. I put about as much value on the last game as I do the first two, in which for instance, Singletery played great.

Some of them played they're first back to back game in their careers. They looked tired, and a lot of their shots were short. Also, in the first two games they seemed to have more of a set rotation, which lent itself to more continuity. This last game seemed more helter skelter to me, with people on the floor that hadn't played before.

Do you know why Sheldon didn't play tonight? I came into the game right at tip off and I don't remember his name even being mentioned.

Sheldon Was at the ESPYs with Candace Parker (Who won best female performer). It was an excused absence and Geoffe was OK with it. It sure looks like we could have used his muscles in that game though. 22...ouch.

we're already making excuses:rolleyes:

there will be plenty more back to backs, i hope they'll learn to adjust. anyways, i said yesterday that it would be my first summer league game. everything i posted was just a summary of what i saw last night. and it was crap. except for spencer and he played well

which was by far the worst game for every player on our team. I think you need to look past stats with singletary for the time being. He's clear intentions in this summer league are to create for teammates and to make smart plays. The kid has the unique ability to get anywhere on the court he wants. I have a tough time believing that if he gets more time on the court with guys like kevin martin he couldn't dish out assists for wide open shots any time he wants.

read my first post. i said he looked like he had patience and knew how to handle the ball. i also said that spencer looks pretty good. i gave credit where it was due. unfortunately for you it wasnt due anywhere else.

If last night was the only game you saw then you missed what most of us are talking about. The whole team looked like crap last night. Including Hawes. He looked good the first game but, he is settling for the jumper to much and not posting up. Well on that note they aren't hitting him in the post nor are they hitting Thompson. Curz mentioned that it may be the intention of the summer league is to work on the pick and roll as probably is something that needs to worked on more than post game.

To me Douby is killing our chance to see Jason or Spencer work in the post as he isn't passing it at all.

Disagree about your Douby assessment. He provided some leadership out there that helps Jason and Spencer big time. He added a bit of NBA reality to the group.

Wednesdays game observations from courtside:
  • The bigs looked tired after the first quarter
  • Dallas went small the entire game with only 1 big most of the time
  • That created matchup problems for our bigs trying to deal with 6-5 and 6-7 guys running up and down at will.
  • Singletary held Bayless in check for first half but after half time they pick and rolled our guys to death and at will and Bayless scored at will as Kings did not rotate at all to stop him. But he looking more like a keeper every game.
  • Kings summer team is almost non-extent for 3 pointers.
  • Jason is the real thing.
  • Hawkins began to show what he can do at both ends after a very slow start.
  • Hawes couldn't put the basket in the hole for anything. Think he pushed it a bit much but was much more aggressive under the basket than previous games.
  • With such a young bunch the beating became contagious no matter who was on the floor. Got up to 27 point diff early in 4th.
  • Appears Ewing is limping a bit, did not play. Neither did Shelden neither of whom were there.
  • Each game is a different King's assistant doing the coaching. Reggie sat up behind bench entire game but did not get involved at all, as is the protocol.

One other interesting observation at the summer league during Kings game on wednesday. GP, Jerry Reynolds and two other front office folk were high up in the stands watching the Kings game. But during the entire game not one outsider came up to talk with them. Every other coach/GM in the stands, and there are 6-8 staff groups at every game, had countless "visitors" to their little observing clusters. Hard to hear anything but the quietness of the Kings group seemed unusual.......... or not, for them.

Gavin & Joe partitioned off a section of the stands opposite the Kings bench "Reserved for Kings Fans". Fun cluster of folks there, all from Sacramento and area.

huh? you serious? His scoring is good but he's nowhere to be found on the boards.

I was only able to catch the Hornet and the Lakers game and I think in one of those he only had like 1 rebound in 20+ minutes.. That's baaad. He will never make it as a PF averaging 1rpg.

oh BTW.. Another double-double for Speights..

UGH!! Who knows, we could have had both Speights, and Thompson if we played our cards right, and got another first rounder :(

Then we could have maybe got Chalmers in the second round along with Jamont Gordon. Or maybe pick Jamont Gordon instead of Waste of a pick Jr.!!!

Sorry ya'll I am still mad that Kevin Love didn't fall to the Kings :(

I'm kind of worried about Thompson's low post game. He hasn't really shown much of anything with his back to the basket in summer league so far.

In fact, his offensive game as a whole kind of bothers me. Of all the first round PFs, only Darrell Arthur is averaging less PPG.

He looks like he does have range on jumpshot, but it hasn't been terribly accurate so far, though he hasn't attempted that many long range shots.

One thing that does look promising is his ability to take opponents off the dribble, something that could present huge mismatch problems. Even so, he tends to finish these moves with an awkward looking jumpshot/runner, usually jumping well before he should and not elevating very high. If he would go all the way to the basket and then finish strong, I think this move would be much more productive.

I think a lot of it has to do with finding his place in the game. It seems like he is unsure what exactly he wants to do sometimes. I'm sure with more practicing and teaching he will be much more understanding of what moves will work for him and what won't. I know what you mean though about his offensive game.

I'm kind of hoping its just a matter of him getting a feel for the pro game.
