Striving for mediocrity?

And who's going to give assets for an $11mil Reke? He got 1 offer in FA.

He went seeking maybe 3 and stayed on the market 72 hours.

Reke was guided to the Pelicans by his agent. Reke also wanted to win and be in the playoffs -- the irony is that Reke's very good nature might be the biggest thing that holds him back from ever being dominant. The Pelicans, who right now are winning the new owner wars, suddenly got very aggressive about making that happen, and there was no wait. no wait for Dwight, or Josh Smith, or anyone else.

Thrown in the absolute guarantee that Reke's numbers go up with a proper usage rate next season, and he was imminently moveable at $11mil.

"Greatness requires risk and vision, not short term moves."-Brick.

Agree and I believe PDA is on the good side of that so far. McLemore, McCallum, Vasquez, Landry. And the loss of the value and problems that went along with Evans - a risk. I have faith there is a vision.

You know the value of players can change over time. Especially young ones.

That's not the issue though. He was saying we match Reke then immediately go shop him. Why would teams go offer us ANYTHING of value when all we clearly want to do is get rid of him?

So, with that in mind, if we match, we were locked in to at least a year of Reke. In which he 1. Blows up and thus no reason to trade him or 2. Shows he's not worth his contract and non one wants to touch his $11mil deal.

right, you were asking for an example of a player signing a big contract and being traded that very season. there was one recently: Nene, in Denver, under a front office prominently featuring our current gm.

Mediocrity. Gotta get there first before we win the finals. First step, mediocrity.

There is no difference between a bad team and a mediocre team. The only difference in sports teams are contenders and non-contenders.

The moves PDA has made so far would be brilliant, if the Kings had the Heat roster - instead of Reke it was Chalmers and sign Landry to replace Haslem. Instead we have a roster of 2 young potential stars, Reke and DMC, and everyone else. PDA for rid of one star for a piece + cap space, then use that cap space for another piece. He added two more people to the "everyone else" category and left Kings with one star.

These are moves that won't be making Kings contenders. No one will be DYING to come to the play for the Kings with the roster constructed as of now. D12 picked Rockets because of James Harden, a star. Not because they have Garcia and Asik.

I wouldn't call JaVale McGee a return you actually want

Wrong way wrong. The difference between being a first round and out and 2nd round and out playoff team is huge profitability vs not making the playoffs.

I don't like the guy either, still, he was a young big with considerable upside. it's something, not less than what they would have gotten had they done an s&t and better than letting an asset go to waste.

If make the playoffs, you are contending.

But if you want to talk about profitability, what will sell more tickets: A lineup of Reke/BMC/Iggy/JT/DMC or Vasquez/BMC/Salmons/JT/DMC? Which players would sell more jerseys?

Here is my problem with this. If we felt Reke could only play sg and we drafted Mac because he was our guy, why not match Reke and look for the best possible deal with any team around the league. It's unlikely Vasquez was the best offer you'd get as there are many teams that couldn't bid on him as a rfa but would still want him, especially now that the free agent pool has dried up.

Instead we let him go since he would be redundant and not part of our future plans then picked up a different, less talented redundant piece where what's left will be even harder to trade.

So what's better, dumping Reke for Vasquez/Landry and now trying to unload our garbage or

Matching for Reke and using him as the trade bait?

To me it's an issue of maximizing assets and we didn't do that.

Any team that's trading for a $11 millions player is in a win-now mode and isn't fond to letting go of quality starters. So, I don't know for sure that we can get better return than a Greivis Vasquez in a Reke trade. NO is in a unique position where they have a starting quality PG and an All-Star PG, making the former redundant, and there are only a few teams in similar position as NO and it's anyone's guess whether any of those teams even want him.

A more likely trade is Reke for expiring + pick + young player. The problem with that is the pick is likely a very low pick because Reke will be going to a team that in theory is going to win some games and the young player you get in return is probably not as good as Greivis anyway.

If the idea is to maximize return, the time to trade Reke is one or two years ago. Now is a bit late.

Jersey sales are a small part. The reason the playoffs are huge is because the league pays the players. Teams have to share gate revenue with the other teams, but the margins compared to the regular season are huge.
