Stern to retire in 2014

Hope we have an arena deal done before Feb 1, 2014.

yep. I have mentioend before that for all the heat Stern takes, he's the best friend Kings fans have in this. If the Maloofs jsut wait him out, you have no idea the attitude of the next regime, nor how much stomach it wil have to fight Maloof manipulations.

Time to send Adam Silver a batch of homemade cookies!

I don't think it will come to that. I'm fully expecting the Maloofs to file for relocation this year, regardless of what they say to the fans and media.

I agree and that's why as Kings fans we have to think hard about what strategy to employ right now to defeat Maloofs. We've talked here about some and whatever we do may not keep Kings in Sac - but to not do anything is just what Maloofs want.

This is the gloom over Kings fans heads i'm not sure i get. So they file for relocation. So what? They have been crushed in that hope for the last two years. Why are you all so convinced its going to work for them now? Now after they have spurned the NBA and Stern's helping hand? Now after Sacto proved its point? After Anaheim is completely off the baord with the rise of the Clippers too. I mean anything is possible, but Kings fans seem to have reacted to the Maloofs getting egg on their face last spring as if that weakened your position.

But once Stern is gone and his pride is off the table, there could be renewed danger. Always will be really until a deal is struck or the Maloofs are toast.

As Carmichael Dave pointed out. I doubt Silver will want to deal with a relocation request his first month into being commissioner. And it's something Stern won't want his last year. It would more likely be something for 2015.

I'm not saying it did. I'm simply saying I don't see the Maloofs waiting out Stern before trying this again. I can't cast them in the role of careful, objective plotters that bide their time. They are impetuous, they are dumb and they take things personally.

At this point I wouldn't put it past George to file to relocate to Anaheim once again JUST so he can start an anti-trust lawsuit. Either that or try to convince Hansen/Seattle to vastly overpay. I'm not saying he'll win or that the Kings will move next year, but watching the Maloofs that's how I see this playing out.

Outside of Wells Fargo stock the Kings are the only real asset left in their dwindling portfolio after selling their beer distributorship and losing the controlling interest in the Palms. George wants to maximize the value of that asset and I think he'll angle to do that this year.

We'll see.

The biggest stumbling block to the Maloofs right now is they have no cash coming in the form of a partner. A special partner who is willing to give up cash to buy shares while the Maloofs continue to be majority owners. This is what happened with Bob Hernreich and they need to tap that type of deal again. It has to be somebody with an interest in the team beyond control of the actual team. That task is sounding harder than ever before because the 7% ownership that Bob Cook lost is now going to be up for purchase. The sale proceeds will not be going into the Maloofs pocket and likely to go to creditors that Cook owed. So if you are going to buy up a chunk of a team, buy Cook's part and not what the Maloofs would offer.

The Maloofs don't have the cash to file for relocation on their own. I bet even if they were charged the same relocation amount that OKC was, they could not come up with that. The deal to watch out for is if some party is willing to pay all the relocation costs (NBA relo fee and negotiated settlement on '97 loan at probably well over 110-130 million in total) just for the satisfaction of having a team in their city and arena with no controlling stake in the ownership of the team. Oh and by the way, the Maloofs will want just about every penny of your arena income in order to operate the team.

Even the Seattle group and Larry Ellison would balk at this. They want full team control and ability to move if they shell out money. So yes I sort of think the Maloofs are stuck in Arco/Sleep Train/etc. until some party comes to the table or the Maloofs go back to the city with a little more enthusiasm for the downtown arena.

Stuck in neutral here.

And one more thing, the commish change thing will not affect this situation in any way. The NBA position has been mapped out and it's not in favor of the Maloofs. Seattle is being nudged into the expansion pipeline and no Maloofery will mess that up. The statement about the support of Sacramento and going forward with a new arena is a dictation to the Maloofs that this is the NBA blessed path for them.

The NBA has all but come out and told the Maloofs they need to go back to the table on the downtown arena. It's all there in not so subtle wording.

I see no future in helping the maloofs out by buying tickets or even watching on TV. They stuck us loyal fans in the back on more than one occasion and the last mess was the straw that broke the camel's back. Purchasing tickets won't do us any good in keeping the Kings in town. I won't spend another dime of mine on a maloof product. I will follow them on blogs and news reports and hopefully they will have to sell to somebody who will keep them in Sacramento.

Today, I think I'll go purchase a Giants cap.

You don't watch the Maloofs. You watch the Kings. The Maloofs are just caretakers. That is significantly what the fight to keep them in Sacramento is about proving. The Kings are about Sacramento. Owners come and go, but they are Sacramento's team, not the Maloofs'.

Every Kings fan needs to commit this mantra to memory. It is the most important thing to keep in mind at all times.
