Based on various interviews I've heard with Jackson in the Bay Area, I was really convinced he had matured and/or was just mis-understood in the past. However, I agree the guy is not only an idiot, but a complete jerk. I understand being outspoken and opinionated, but he's just being completely ungrateful. Not only did the warriors help to completely rejuvinate his repuation over the last couple years, but they gave him a contract extension that no other team in the league would have even considered.

I agree with Don Nelson, this is a good thing.
The fact of the matter is that many people in all facets of life that have the title "Captain," "Boss," or "Leader" do not deserve, respect or live up to those titles. So, when Stephen Jackson comes out and says "you know what? I don't want that responsibility of role model. I'd rather give this up." I consider this a great thing.

It's not like he was this great role model giving up and sacrificing something. In the article he states he took the extention just because of the money. The guy is a clown. Like many before him, all the talent in the world, with none of the brain. Ever wonder why so many teams got rid of him even after he was putting up 20+ a game?

Well....While I really think he needs to just shut up (and I suspect he's positioning himself for a potential buy-out by the warriors so he can choose which team to go to next), I don't have much of a problem with the quote at the end of the story. May be a bit delusional, but at least shows some heart:

I feel like I'm just as good as him. I might not get the publicity or notoriety he gets, but I feel like I can play with anybody in the NBA any given night.

Lets be clear! I'm not a fan of Jackson the person. I've got no problem with Jackson the player. Well, at least most of the time. However, what we have here is a giant boondoggle perpertrated by the ownership and aided by Don Nelson, who to me has no interest in developing the young team he's been given.
Nelson is a coach that has won almost everything and yet has really won nothing. He's never won the big games. The only championship he's ever had was as a player. He's always wanted a center, but never knew what to do with one when he had one. He's become a flavor of the month coach, whose only objective right now is to pass Lenny Wilkens on the total wins list.

This doesn't absolve Jackson from being a jerk at times. But I agree with the article that Nelson put Jackson in a position to fail. I don't see Nellie or ownership taking any responsiblilty for the situation the Warriors are in. And, this is a clear example of what can happen to a franchise when owners think they know better than the GM does.

Jackson may be 100% correct. I just think these things should be discussed between the people involved and not be a media war, played out in public. Even if Jackson loathes ownership and Nellie, by whining to the press about it, he doesn't just hurt them, he hurts the team, his teammates and the fans. Who needs that @#$!# going on when you're just trying to play as best you can as an individual or team or you're a fan? I don't like players going to the media with their unhappiness or anger or their demands.

As I said, I'm not absolving Jackson of any misbehavior on his part. But it appears to me that ownership and Nellie are doing their best to make Jackson the scapegoat in this. And of course, he's doing his best to help them. Those that wish to pick on Jackson, have at it. He's an easy target. But to me, the bigger picture is the mismanagement of the franchise by both the ownership and Nelson, who appears to have ownership in his pocket. Nelson forced out Mullins, who, while I don't think is god's gift to GM's, had at least made the Warriors competitive, and who is a pretty good judge of talent.
Jackson is in desperate need of representation. He needs to rehire his agent, or at least another agent to do his speaking for him. He wants to be traded, but has done nothing to help in that process. He has no future with the Warriors. Once on the bad side of Nelson, well, its hard to get back to the right side. He'll say all the right things, but its nothing but PR..

I think the Warriors are in trouble, too and needs changes. Certainly Nellie doesn't seem to have much interest vested in the team.
However, I think if a player wants to be traded, hopefully somewhere you'd like to go, or you want a buyout, it would be in the player's best interests to not deliberately antagonize eveybody.
