State of the Kings

It pains me to say this, but the Kings will finish last in the Pacific due to lack of chemistry and defense. I know everyone is aware of their faults, so I won't go into them. The only player on the Kings that has a future is KMart....Bibby is slow and turns the ball over too much, Ron can't shoot and is throwing team mates under the bus...like after the Warriors game......Jazz will hand us our asses tonight......Too bad we weren't like the Bulls....(their record doesn't show it now) but their young talent will be a force for years to come....BTW......why are Peja and BJax lighting it up now and didn't really with the Kings.....just a thought on the state of the Kings.....

ummm . . . . . . wow.

I think we see things a bit differently. I am not expecting a championship this year, but I am not turning in my pom poms just yet.

People are always wildly swinging between us beign a contender, the best defensive team in the league and all of that silliness, to us being a disaster and finishing last etc. Could happen -- we are currently the 4th of 5 in the division, and the 5th is the Suns of all teams. But even if it did we might still be mediocre and just in an incredibly tough division. We are what we are, we have problems and limitations, but barring a major injury, Ron losing his cool, or the team rebelling on Muss, we aren't going to be terrible. May even still end up being pretty good.

It seems like every post that you make has some type of negativity towards this team. It almost seems like you just started watching this team. Peja and Bobby were very good players for us. Peja was one of the top shooters in this league during his time with the Kings. We all know his faults and his lack of passion to play when he is injured. I was one of his biggest critics on this board. I miss seeing him hit 3's from 30 ft behind the arc but I am much happier with Ron and his poor shot selection. Bobby did well while he was here as well. If he sucked as much as you think he did during his time here he wouldn't have won the 6th man of the year award. He was also injured the past 2 seasons with leg problems and an abdominal strain. This team has faced major changes over the past 3 years and these players were victims of the changes that occured. They are playing well now because thay have been relatively healthy and have found their roles on the Hornets.

I went to my first Kings game in 1993 actually....Kings vs. Suns...Barkley was my favorite player and when the old Suns got blown up, I decided to like my home team Kings....I am from Northern CA anyway......It is funny how teams get blown up for no reason really.....Money plays a part, but I would rather have Webber's calming of the team psyche than K9's blank stare and missed lay ups....I like the Kings, but they have always seemed to lack mental toughness and have the "woe is us" attitude when they are down by 10 or more....they seem to lack guts......just my thoughts....

....Bibby is slow and turns the ball over too much,

......why are Peja and BJax lighting it up now and didn't really with the Kings......

I want to quickly comment on just these two "points", lest I be accused of feeding a troll too much:

a) Bibby is toughing it out with a bum hand. To knock him for high turnovers at this stage of things is just unreasonable.

b) Peja is on pace for the worst season of his career with 18.4 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.0 apg, .6 steals and 1.7 turnovers. By far his worst statistical year ever. He is leading his team in 3 pt percentage and free throw percentage (with the worst free throw percentage of his career at 80.7). If the Hornets are happy with their value for the dollar on Peja, then God bless them - they are a loving and tolerant bunch.

To add to this I would much rather have a blossoming KMart then Peja. We gain back all of Peja' PPG plus more in rebounding, steals, etc.

Kings

Good to see everybody coming around to my point of view.

Defensively: bad PF defense, no shotblockers, no weakside defense. From 1-5, only 3 is a good defender. For you KM fans out there, he is a poor one-on-one defender, easy to blow by or post up (remember Baron Davis).

Offensively: Not enough balls for Artest, Bibby and Martin, forget about it when Miller comes back. KM will be adjusted to and will not be a big scorer later in the season.

Coach, Owners: Any group of young guys like this crew (all born with a silver spoon in their mouths) thinking this bunch of Geezers can be made into a solid defensive team is smoking some very good weed. Probably Sac's best.

Expect: < 35 wins, lottery pick

If stopping Baron Davis is your measuring stick for defensive talent, then the whole league sucks. When Davis is healthy as he is now, he cannot be stopped by any guard. When Martin has guarded Tony Parker, he has done a decent job. Martin is not all league defender, but he isn't bad.
He would be a better defender if they weren't trying to hide Bibby on defense every night.

Before we go too far down this route, much like the orignal post, both sides are going to extremes with Martin. Jerry Reynolds, in his role as Kings promoter, will tell you that Kevin is an absolutley great young defender. And as is usual with Jerry Reynolds, just pat him on his senile old head and send him on his way. On the other hand, now people are trying to claim Kevin is a crap defender? Uh, no on that count either. What Kevin is now is a gambler. Nabs a lot of spectacular steals, overplays. And so when he misses, he gets beat. When he's focused his quickness makes him a good solid defender though. And despite the scrawny frame, he isn't afraid of contact. The intensity comes and goes for him on that end, he can be beat on any given play. But he can also come up with big plays over there. As is often the case, the claims on both extremes are too far.

i agree with brick, KM has been able to get a good number of deflections and steals against his man or other player's men. He is not DC in terms of defense. but really the way the league officiates perimeter defenders right now, the offensive player just has too much freedom to do anything they can, that actually has resulted in certain teams becoming really good. The new officiating started 2 seasons ago and see what it has done to transform the games of players who could get to the rim. (Nash, Kobe, Dwade, AI, VC, etc...) these players were already elite before but the new rules just made them even tougher to guard. So going back on topic, KM, I think does a reasonable job on defense, he's no lockdown defender like ron, but he isn't a liability either like.....mike.

my 2 cents

Gotta give Kevin credit for drawing charges too.

Even though Bill Walton said on TV the other day how he hates guys to slide in front of people, fall down, and call that defense. I call it getting the ball for your side - I don't care what Bill calls it.

I agree with Bill on that one, and that doesn't happen often -- that's a BS call in the NBA. Right there with the offensive guy doing the scissor kick on his shot to create contact and getting the call.

Right on. Throw Bowen's nonsense in there too.

I think that if the Kings finish last in the Pacific it will be because they pan out as the least talented team in the Pacific and because they don't have a well-rounded roster to compete on a position-to-position level.

I wouldn't be too jealous of the Bulls. Optimism for the future only goes so far. They still don't have a go-to player and they're still not an elite team. A couple of young role players aren't going to change that. In a few years Nocioni and Big Ben will be a little older and they'll just plug in the young guys and have the same 40-something win team.

To answer the question about Peja and Bobby: Chris Paul. He made David West's career last season, got Speedy Claxton a big contract with Atlanta and now he's got Peja and Bobby reborn and the heat is off Byron Scott. He could probably even pull the NY Knicks into the late lottery if you gave him a chance.
