Starting 5?

#1
So, who does everyone have as our starting 5 to begin the season at this point?

PG: Darren Collison
SG: Ben McLemore
SF: Rudy Gay
PF: Derrick Williams
C: Demarcus Cousins

It's a real toss-up for me at most positions, but this is my gut feeling.

As impressive as Stauskas has been in Summer League, McLemore's season of NBA experience should give him the nod to start the season, and Collison SHOULD start over Ray, barring injury.

It'll be a line-ball call who starts at PF, though. I honestly think that D-Will should be given the duty right now - He's young, athletic and although he's not all there on either end (Especially the defensive) he's shown glimpses of what he could be capable of. You know exactly what you're getting with Thompson and Landry, and I think it's time for the team to roll the dice and see if Williams will cut it.

PG: Collison
SG: Stauskas
SF: McLemore
PF: Gay
C: Cousins

Just a wild ass guess and its just a bonus if it makes the small ball haters twitch :)

Williams should only play SF he's actually awful as a PF, Playing D-Will as a starting PF is asking for us to get destoried on the interior and get Cousins out of the game with fouls.

For me it's this

PG: Collison
SG: Nik
SF: Rudy
PF: Toss up between Reggie/JT depending on the match up imo
C: Cuz

With all the PF we have starting our backup SF there would be silly. Assuming everything stays pat. Evans or JT starts at pf

4 of the 5 are pretty obvious:

C- Cousins

SF- Gay
SG- Stauskas
PG- Collison

There is simply no way we enter the season with McLemore starting at SG again. He probably lost us 5-7 games last year. So while the above is not shockingly inspiring, that's about as good as the plan gets at the moment. Get some extra ball movement out of Stauskas, and hopefully finally a shooter who can in fact really shoot.

PF...I vote for whoever is this mystery guy that I KNOW PDA is trying to line up. :p But if the season started tomorrow...DWill is a failure as a "PF". Has no idea at all what the word means. Not him. Landry is the world's worst pairing with Cousins. A ball stopping shooter to compete with him, not complement him. Besides, he's our natural 6th man now. The one professional efficient scorer we should have on our bench. Acy is flat not good enough. So its JT or Reggie. I think for the time being you go with Reggie, dominate the glass (particularly important because a weakness is that our guards aren't going to grab ANY this year -- Stauskas is a terrible rebounder, and Collison is just a twerp), and have JT/Landry as a fullsized pair of bench bigs.

I think a lot depends on pre-season.

I would think preseason would look like....

PG Collison
SG Mclemore
SF Gay
PF JT
C Cuz

Reg Season....

PG Collison
SG Stauskas
SF Gay
PF DWill
C Cuz

I twitched....So, uh..Mission accomplished! :p

Anyways...

PG: Collison
SG: McLemore (to be replaced by Nik within a month or so)
SF: Gay
PF: Evans
C: Cousins

JT might start though, it seems like every year he's the only dude showing up to camp in game shape.

If I had to guess right now, if no other moves were to be made, I'd say:

PG Collison
SG Stauskus
SF Gay
PF Evans
C DMC

Bench you have:
PG McCallum
SG McLemore
SF Williams
PF Landry
C JT

If our team gels, and if our coaches do their jobs, IMO that's a roster that can actually compete. And with that said, I do expect another move. I'm cautiously optimistic here...

Something like this. Whether it is Reggie or JT, I don't think it makes much difference. I might start McLemore for 5 days just because he's had a year in the league but I would switch to Stauskas very quickly like in 5 games. Clearly Stauskas is miles better than McLemore.

PG Collison
SG Stauskus
SF Gay
PF Evans (or some one brought in)
C DMC
JT is about all we have to play behind DMC AND he can take time at the 4 if Evans gets early foul trouble.

If i had to guess, i'd think it would be

Collison
Stauskas
Gay
Landry
Cousins

But i would like to see Acy at 4 since he plays so hard and suddenly can hit open 3s.

ideally, i hope the starting 4 on opening night is a player that is currently not on the roster

PG: Collison
SG: Mclemore
SF: Gay
C: Cousins
PF: Unless JT finds a new home, then give him the ball and score 20+ ppg. So we can get something in return. The same plan like we did with IT.

Starters

C: Cousins
PF:Evans
SF: Gay
SG: Stauskas
PG: Collison

Bench
PG: McCallum
SG: McLemore/Brooks
SF: Williams/Outlaw
PF: Landry/Acy
C: JT

We really need to upgrade the 4 spot. Evans, JT and Landry are all serviceable NBA vets but all are ideally 3rd bigs(Evans probably an upper end 4th big). I just don't know what is out there, what pieces can we possibly trade to upgrade, I just don't see anything substantial, at best we will pick up another 3rd or 4th type big that meet what we need. Maybe you go after Okafor and hope he's healthy for one season. Please trade Derrick Williams, the guy only gives effort if he is getting volume shots, and he is not getting that on any NBA team.

If we start the season without a new PF, a defensive one, that's quite a failure. There are no excuses, not after moving Robin Lopez to Portland last summer when he was originally traded to us and not after blowing 6.5M/Y on Carl.

Doing that implied a plan. If we have one of our current PF's starting on opening night, tells me there either is no plan or our FO simply doesn't recognize a defensive player even when it falls in their lap.

Lopez would have paired with Boogie better than any other player on our roster.

No, no he wouldn't have.

This silly notion that Cuz can play the 4 has to stop. Offensively, it would be fine because Cuz can hit the elbow jumper and is comfortable in a face-up game. But he'd flat out suck defensively at the 4. He JUST figured out how to defend the incredibly offensively inept Center position without getting into foul trouble. Now some we want him extending out and guarding the Love, LMA, Lee, Blake Griffins of the world? No thanks.

It somewhat worked with Dalembert because Dally could extend out on the perimeter and defend the stretch 4's, which is 85% of NBA Pf's today. You don't want nor can we afford to pair Cousins with a pure C.

right now we don't have the players to put out a good starting/finishing five, so give me collison/ben/gay/dwill/cousins. bluff that ben and dwill have some value and then ship their butts out.

i'm not in favor of starting JT with this roster because teams would just put him in pick and rolls with stauskas or mclemore and score 120 every night. also, we have no back up center.
