Spurs still looking for starting center...

San Antonio Express-News - The Spurs missed out on both Joel Przybilla, who re-upped in Portland, and their own free agent Nazr Mohommed, who has bolted to Detroit to take Ben Wallace's place, but the San Antonio Express-News reports that the Spurs are still looking for that big man to play next to Tim Duncan.

"We're happy for Nazr; I think he got the contract he was looking for," Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said. "We certainly appreciate the contributions he made to our program. He was an important part of our championship."

The team will sign 6-foot-10 Lithuanian Robertas Javtokas, a former second-round draft pick, but doesn't consider him a serious candidate to start.

Utah's Jarron Collins and Memphis' Lorenzen Wright are probably the top remaining free-agent centers in a shallow pool that also includes Scot Pollard, Michael Olowokandi, Jake Voskuhl and Kelvin Cato, and restricted free agents Melvin Ely and Jackie Butler.

Collins earned only $1.7 million last season, making him an affordable option, but the Jazz also hope to re-sign him.

The Spurs also will continue to explore trades. Milwaukee is trying to move Jamaal Magloire, but it's yet to be determined whether the Spurs have enough assets — namely Brent Barry and Scola's rights — to make any deal

Can see them getting Magloire or Wright....

I don't think the Bucks would take Barry/Scola... they need defense, have enough swingmen, and I'd say have their young energy swingman in Noel. Bucks want to go young with their proposing of starting Villanueva and Bogut.

Scola and someone else? Possibly.

I don't see the Bucks trading Magloire there for that very reason. They have no assets that they would want. I hope they don't get Kandi.

its so funny... just like phoenix last season after the traded qrich then lost johnson(traded)....

I don't think the Spurs were seriously going after any of the FA centers. They need a forward with size and quickness, who can guard the new breed of quick versatile forwards that Duncan can't keep up with and who can overpower Bowen. Just against us, they had to contend with strong bruising wing players, and they can meet us again in the PO's. They're making adjustments and that's why Rasho was dumped.

If they can’t acquire a player of that ilk, they’ll sign one of the lower level centers but it’ll be to a small contract.

Hey Spurs, are ya interested in Kenny Thomas? No no, he isn't actually an undersized PF, he's a center!

Or may we interest you in Corliss Williamson instead?

Duncan might very well slide to Center and they would fit a quick and athletic PF in as earlier stated in the thread

Kenny Thomas on the Spurs? Oh that would be ... interesting. I can't even begin to imagine the fireworks the first time Pop yelled at him and sat his posterior down on the bench.

i'm not sure that there would even be fireworks. scuffle with shareef abdur rahim aside, kenny thomas isn't much of a fighter. he is, however, an avid complainer, and that's worse. he'd whine a bunch, and probably to the media. at least fighter's generally have a whole lot of passion.

Could be secondmost interesting thing outside of the Kings for us to watch. First would be the Knickies, of course.... :D

"The Spurs' process this summer appears to be waiting for the most fiscally sensible solution to fielding a starting center. Whether it is Jarron Collins, Jackie Butler, Michael Olowokandi, Scot Pollard or someone you may never have heard of who stands next to Duncan when the Spurs' starters are announced next season, that player likely is going to be paid less than what Rasho Nesterovic and Nazr Mohammed received to do the same thing the past two seasons." San Antonio Express-News

"The San Antonio Spurs have emerged as a potential suitor for Jazz free-agent center Jarron Collins. The Jazz have said they want to re-sign Collins, who has spent his entire five-year NBA career in Utah. The team, however, also has indicated it will not overpay for Collins, who made $1.7 million while averaging 5.3 points and 4.2 rebounds per game last season." Deseret Morning News

I also realize, I've replied to almost every thread currently on the forum page. ;)

They should try to get Al Harrington. Play Harrington at PF and Duncan at C. Hawks can't S&T him anymore(atleast I dont think they can) so he basically has to take the MLE. If he's going to take the MLE anyway wouldn't he want to do it for a contender? Duncan is more of a center anyway(IMO) even though they've always put him at PF.

That'd def. give them some more youth and athleticism - which they definitely need, and is strong at the same time.
