San Antonio Express-News - The Spurs moved quickly when the NBA’s free-agent signing period began Wednesday, signing point guard Jacque Vaughn and extending offer sheets to centers Francisco Elson and Jackie Butler.

Elson and Butler are restricted free agents, so Denver and New York have seven days to match the offers. The Knicks have already indicated they want to keep Butler.

The Spurs extended offers to both Elson and Butler in part because they were unable to reach agreement with former second-round pick Robertas Javtokas. Javtokas is preparing to play in Greece, but the Spurs haven’t given up hope they will be able to resume negotiations with him, if needed.

Vaughn, who signed a one-year contract for the league minimum, will compete with Beno Udrih for the backup point-guard job.

Well, JV is indeed quick, a good defender and can guard PGs and some 2s. Solid finisher and shooter as well. Nice little signing by Spurs.

Spurs are going after a couple guys I want us to get for back-up C. They can only get one of them though. :)

Wow, crazy to see the Spurs scrambling so much this offseason. Nothing seems to be going down the way they planned.

This also takes the Spurs out of the running for Marcus Banks. Who was said to be chasing him.

Bet he ends up w/ the Cavs or Nuggets.

Jacque Vaughn sucks.

Because he's not much of an offensive player? He's quick and a good defender, experienced, and hustles. That doesn't mean he sucks, it means he's a nice role player.

He's better than Hart because he's more experienced and quicker.

Hart hasn't proved to be a good contributing role player yet, had his best year on an expansion team filling in for Knight or coming off the bench. Hart had a handful of nice games for us off the bench, but not really significant enough on the whole year. Overall, Hart was a disappointment due to being in a completely different system, not living up to what we thought he'd be, and getting very limited oppurtunities and having a limited role.

Vaughn's been a solid role player with the Jazz and Nets. The latter of which I've seen regularily the past couple seasons, and have seen Vaughn's stuff naturally.

Vaughn can be said to be an ok backup pg or a very good 3rd string pg. He was the primary backup for Jkidd last year and did a good job based on his previous years of being horrible(:p) but he needs to work on getting more consistent with his midrange jumper. He's good defensively and can pressure the ball

Jacque cannot hit a shot. That's his career M.O.. Just an insignificant signing. Amused that that pile of minor nothings merited a "Spurs moved qucikly" comment in the story.

^ easily....

jacque never has really gotten many minutes in his career but if i remember correctly the times he did he produced pretty good numbers on offense... but his defense was already guranteed to be at least decent on any given night...

ohh yeah ryle jacque vaughn does not suck...

but i always keep thinking he's from france cuz of his name... which im guessing is pronounced "jack" even though its spelt in a frenchy way...

Yeah I don't think its a big deal. Udrih brings more to the table than Vaughn does IMO.

Offensively, absolutely.

But the Spurs wanted to get a PG who's quick and can defend. Hence why they were supposedly going after Marcus Banks, but obviously he didn't want to be a back-up (possibly why nothing came up since that June story) or he wanted too much money. Udrih gives you effort on defense naturally with Popovich, but isn't that quick, so you don't get much effectiveness there.

If Udrih was gonna be their back-up PG, they wouldn't of got Vaughn to battle for the back-up role with Udrih. Should be an interesting battle, as a pretty regular follower/watcher of the Spurs.

Why don't the Kings extend an offer or two to Butler and Elson

Exactly what I've been thinking, either would be a good signing and would be a huge upgrade over Potapenko. Both would bring what we need.

whatever it is its easier than...ya-sa-kev-a-cious. i dont want that guy for the sole reason of having to listen to reynolds trying to pronounce it.

New York Daily News - The New York Knicks are expected to match the three year, $7 million offer sheet that Jackie Butler signed with the San Antonio Spurs , sources told the New York Daily News.

The Knicks have seven days to match the offer or work out a sign-and-trade for Butler, a player Isiah Thomas uncovered in the CBA two years ago.

Joining the Spurs would be more beneficial to Butler because it would give him an opportunity to start alongside Tim Duncan and play with a perennial contender. The Spurs lost Nazr Mohammed to free agency and traded Rasho Nesterovic. In New York, Butler would be playing behind Eddy Curry and Jerome James.

The Knicks made a qualifying offer of $900,000 to Butler and questioned whether he could get a better deal. Thomas even predicted that negotiations with Butler would extend into September.

"My summer is much shorter," said Butler's agent, Keith Glass

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/basketball/knicks/story/434669p-366223c.html

"The Spurs divided their $5.2million midlevel exception between the two centers. Butler signed a three-year, $7 million offer sheet, while Elson received a two-year deal for close to $6million. Knicks officials have intimated to some they intend to match the Spurs' offer. Publicly, they said they haven't decided."

"Signing Butler and Elson to offer sheets could come at the expense of Robertas Javtokas, the Spurs' 2001 second-round draft pick. The Spurs had projected the 6-11 Javtokas to be their backup center before negotiations broke down this week."

"If Elson and Butler are retained by their respective teams and Javtokas heads to Greece, the Spurs could be left with their pens in their hands. Utah's Jarron Collins and Memphis' Lorenzen Wright are the top unrestricted free-agent centers, but there's no guarantee they would be on the market by the end of the week."

Spurs may just have to get LoWright.

Well this means their money is wrapped up right. Even if the players don't come. They can't negotiate with anyone else now that they have tied up the MLE.
