Spurs show interest in Miller and Salmons

John Salmons or Brad Miller may very well never play for the San Antonio Spurs, but the mere possibility of how one or the other could get there is worth revealing because of the other name involved.
Robert Horry.
According to a source close to the Spurs, San Antonio has interest in Salmons or Miller and the only way of landing one of them may be by way of the man who so many Kings fans despise. Horry the Kings-killer is not playing and has shown no signs of coming out of retirement, but he may be the only way San Antonio can land Salmons or Miller. The Spurs, according to the source, are considering which player helps them more and trying to figure out what it would take to bring one of them on board. The big three of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker are obviously untouchable, and there aren't a whole lot of intriguing or attractive players or contracts beyond that.
Enter Horry, who would re-sign with San Antonio for this season only in a deal worth (insert necessary $ figure here) and then be traded. He would then be waived by the Kings while chuckling on his way out the door with a huge check in hand, with the Kings also possibly taking back Michael Finley (expiring deal worth $2.5 million) and getting out from underneath a contract (Salmons or Miller) they no longer see as part of the big picture plan. Because Horry played last season, I believe it's within the post-retirement timeframe that this sort of deal would still be allowed by the league. The part where this likely falls apart - if it's ever discussed at all - is the Kings wanting more.
San Antonio doesn't have a first-round pick this year, although they could give up second-round picks for 2009 and/or a future first-rounder. Now because Salmons' deal is worth $5.4 next year (with a player option for 2010-11 worth $5.8) and Miller's expires next year at $12.2 million, it is obviously easier to get to Salmons' number (or within the collective bargaining agreement-mandated 125 percent). The Spurs are just one a number of teams looking at the Kings' roster and pondering the possibilities, but the context and history surrounding this one would make this move far more comical than the rest.

Doesn't look too attractive. I'd want at least a future first rounder, maybe two. Second rounder is pretty much nothing as it will be end of the draft. Most likely nothing to this.

If there is anything to this, I'm asking for Splitter to be included (as well as a future 1st). But will he ever come over? He is just gone 24, so he's still young. He may come over in his prime just as we're looking good again. Certainly worth a try.

Who is Splitter?

Recall reading on ESPN, that most GMs in the league are convinced that he shall never come over. He can be paid only the rookie scale (less than a million, based on where he was drafted), and he is making much more in Europe.

Miller makes perfect sense for San Antonio, but nothing they could possibly give us in return in terms of players makes any sense for us. Horry in a Van Horn scenario? Finley? The right to Splitter? Nothing useful there unless Splitter actually comes over one day.

Future picks are the only tradeable commodity they have. And picks in the high-20s aren't so hot. If we could manage to finagle two first rounders, unprotected, and far enough in the future that the Spurs might finally be on the decline, I guess we do it if there's nothing better on the table. It would be tough to get excited about a move like that, though.

Nah, I am defeintely not feeling this team to play with. We could get much more. I just would love the Portland trade if Raef and Bayless would be the trade. they can keep their 1st round pick.

Sorry dude ain't happening...Read somewhere that the Suns want Bayless in a trade for Amare but, Portland says they aren't giving up Bayless, so if they aren't giving him up for amare they definitely aren't going to give him up for Salmons. Dont get me wrong though, I would love to have Bayless here. Maybe we should try and get George Hill, he looks like a pretty decent prospect.

Horry will NOT play for Sacramento. PERIOD.

As a person, I don't mind the guy but the mere idea of having him play here makes me sick.

That being said.....Oberto, Splitter, and next years 1st, + filler for Miller and Salmons?

Just throwing something out there. No reason for it or anything :P

Kings dont need riskss anymore. We have plenty of prospects. its time to get some proven players because Miller and Salmons arent garbage players. I dont want anymre Ron Artest deals. Is time to get a team going.

I don't think he would actually play, he'd probably be immediately waived in that scenario.

We have plenty of prospects? Not at the point we dont.....We have one at the point and its Bobby Brown. He had a chance to show us that he could play the point when he started for Beno, and he stunk it up. I'm not giving up on the kid but damn 2 points? Not a very good showing.

George Hill has been playing very good against the celtics tonight. the Kid can shoot, Pass,Defend.. I would be down for a Hill,Expiring Splitter, pick for Either Salmons Or Miller.
It looks like HIlls got like an 8 foot wingspan. Kid could be a great defender.

I've watched Splitter play on NBA TV twice this year. He's pretty good. I would love to have him. Maybe Petrie could do his magic again and convince him to come.

I wonder how kindly the league would look on that, considering they seemed pretty unhappy about the Van Horn loophole the last time it was used. I wouldn't be surprised if they found a way to insist Horry remain on the roster, though I don't know how they'd do it.

That said, on the off chance that Horry becomes a Kings bench player for a few months, so be it. Sure, painful memory and all, but it's not like he went out of his way to spite the city or the organization. He was a basketball player who hit a big shot to help his team win a big game. How do you hold that against him just because it happened to be against us?

It's possible I missed reports of him mouthing off about us, but as far as I know the guy's a class act. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time (from our point of view).

I see no reason why the Kings do this deal just to rid themselves of Brad's deal a year sooner. Also, giving up Salmons and getting nothing in return doesn't make ANY sense whatsoever. Salmons' contract is too attractive to get nothing in return, and there's no rush to dump Brad for nothing because his time is limited anyway.

Seconded.

The league can suck it for all I care. They still owe us big for screwing us over in game 6.

Brad on a Spurs uniform is all I wanted to prevent the Lakers from taking it to the Finals. Popovich knows well how efficiently utilize two seven footers. Hell! even Matt 'red-haired' Booner was torching the Celtics today.:eek::eek:

Yea I hope Brad or Salmons goes to San Antonio. I dont wan the Lakers to win.

What about that George Hill guy?

I like Hill. I'd also like to get their #1 for next year, unrestricted. The Spurs are getting very long in the tooth. Age, injuries, who knows? Maybe they have a very bad year next year and that #1 could be pretty darn high.

Very True about the pick. I have a feeling we are going to deal with the spurs.
I'd also like to scoop up Mahinimi or the rights to Javtokas or Splitter from them. But HIll had some pretty huge games while Parker was out, A cuple 20 pt nights if I recall. He would be a good young PG prospect to get on the squad.
