Vote to put arena funding plan on ballot delayed

A vote to put an arena funding plan on the November ballot hit an unexpected bump in the road Wednesday with the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors. The supervisors' vote has been postponed until 7:30 p.m. to allow officials "to get the appropriate agreements in place," said County Executive Terry Schutten.

Schutten said "things were moving smoothly," but tight-lipped county officials would not offer more specifics. Schutten didn't elaborate on problems encountered, except to say "with any situation like this there is a very complex set of issues involved."

Chris Holben, a spokesman for the arena negotiating team, said parties involved in the arena plan were finalizing all terms reached last month.
"They're attempting to dot the I's and cross the T's," Holben said.

It's unclear what portions of the agreement between the city, county and the Maloofs, owners of the Sacramento Kings, are being discussed. Arena negotiators hammered out an agreement last month. City and county officials at the time said a finalized and detailed "Memorandum of Understanding" would be completed in October, but never before mentioned the need for more discussion on basic deal points.

Last week, supervisors held a four-hour hearing on the arena issue, and their vote tally was the same. By law, a second hearing was required, and supervisors had said Wednesday's action was viewed as a formality.

The supervisors Wednesday night will address if they will place on the November ballot a quarter cent sales tax for 15 years. A companion advisory measure will ask voters if they would like to see the $1.2 billion in revenue raised by the tax divided between the arena and a host of community projects throughout the county.

Roger Dickinson was on KCRA 3 at 6:30 p.m. and they (county representatives) talked to the representatives of MS&E. It was just a matter of getting things done on paper and he expects things to go as planned and be placed on the November ballot. Nothing to worry about, but stranger things have happened so we'll find out within the next half hour or so.

Nothing has changed in the details of the ballot measure. They just went over to clarify the details. The county representatives are going over different points such as the construction costs as of right now.

The last dude to speak sounded horrible. He flat out said "poor people shouldn't be able to vote on this." Wow.

I couldn't believe my ears. I was shocked. Didn't he say he was for the arena but was concerned with something about it? The loan? I forget.

He was worried about the term "pay back the 70 million dollar loan". I didn't get it really but I really could not believe that. It almost seemed like a mole for the other side.

They better get a campaign going quick. The antis have been out in full force. I swear at least 90% of what I've read has been more to the negative side. I really don't have a very good feeling about this. :( Hopefully, its just attributable to my pessimistic personality.

count me in with the "we're doooomed, we're never going to make it" crowd. i guess enough small minded individuals getting together is enough to derail what should be a very positive & exciting opportunity for the rest of us.

sigh. :(

I think it passes...safely. :)

Caveat: As long as the education points are adequately addressed.
Dammit, I'm thinking positive until November...I was on the 'we're doomed' side of things, and I looked at it logically from the anti side of things...but you know what...I dont care at this point...there's no way in hell I'm letting this go without getting my say in favor of this...I've already turned 10 or so 'no' votes to 'yes' votes...and dammit if it aint gonna be hard work to get this thing over, but we've got a 3 month battle with this, against people like David Jones and Bob Graswich, who obviously want the city to continue to rot in the downtown areas, and never be cleaned up, unless someone GIVES the city a freaking handout to do it, and want this filth to continue to fester, all in the name of saving money. Nothing was ever accomplished without hard work, and these idiots taking a 'sit on your butts long enough and point the finger at everything in favor of progress' attitude. This is about cleaning up the panhandlers, drunks, drug users, and homeless folks that I see every day I work downtown, this is about cleaning up disgusting areas of downtown like the Greyhound bus depot, this is about cleaning up the mounds of toxic dirt in the railyard and giving this city a pulse that its never had in its history, its about FINALLY getting rid of the slime that goes on in the downtown streets that make people SCARED to go there. This vote would put so much into motion with this cleansing, it would set off a domino effect like this city has never seen. I dont know how else to put it to people that vote 'no' against ANYTHING that even involves 1 cent from their pockets. Do all of the folks that live downtown that are voting 'no' against this positive growth even leave their houses and SEE the work that needs to be done? I LOVE my hometown and am tired of seeing the remaining negatives that are still in place in our downtown area. This is a critical mass we are witnessing. THIS IS OUR CITY!!

Again - nicely put.

I saw the peice on the 10pm channel 58 news (same as KCRA). It had a nice positive spin. After a long part about the positive, they had a shorter part with Kohn. They did show that guy you were talking about - He said something like that he doesn't want people that can't afford a ticket to vote it down. A relatively balanced peice.

Arco Arena has picked up WWE's No Way Out in February.

Who says Arco can't get any event in it?

Man, if the initative doesn't pass, looks like it'll be an RV/Boat Show, Heather Fargo RULEZ Open Forum and maybe MC Hammer's comeback show will be all that Arco can do...

Something was definitely odd about that guy. He didn't deserve the few minutes he got at the podium. The only side he represents is being the poster boy for why it's wrong for women to do drugs while pregnant.
I feel the more people that vote - the more likely this will pass.

'Heather Fargo RULEZ Open Forum'...Classic!:D Keynote speaker at that would probably be former mayor Anne Rudin.

Where did you get that information from?

I have read it will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Feb. 18, 2007.

Okay I checked out pwinsider.com and they have it listed at Arco Arena.
