Somebody Tell Me About Vitaly Potepenko

I guess the thing I like the best out of this is that I can now see Skinner here in Portland... and he might actually play.

Pot isn't the worst option we had, but I waited for years for him to show me something in Boston which never happened. I know nothing about Monia other than that I'm fairly certain he hasn't been on the court in any of the Blazer games I've attended - I hope this doesn't mean they've resigned themselves to losing Bonzi.

Vitaly is called the "Ukraine Train" for a reason... he is big, slow, dirty and prone to breakdown at inopportune times. ;)

And what does he use as fuel? Can I take a wild guess? :D

Wasn't he whining a lot in Seattle and demanding a trade over playing time? Hopefully he won't create any trouble here...

Hahaha... I don't know about Vitaly... I question his integrity... I know he whined in Seattle about playing time, and often showed up to camp overweight. Not sure where Petrie is going with this...

Between this year and last, Vitaly has FIVE (5) blocked shots total, in 656 minutes of playing time.

For comparison, Jason Hart, in 658 minutes this year, has 4 blocks.

For a 6'10" 285-lb. guy, that just screams lack of effort.
~~

I don't think this deal has anything to do with whether or not they are going to resign Bonzi or not. Vitaly is here to be a true backup center and it's a free look at Monia who might turn out to be really good. However, Monia is not a true 2 guard.

He's never had Artest as a teammate before.

And like many before him, Vitaly comes to the Sacramento Kings with a clean slate...

And my heartfelt promise to try very hard NOT to use the Mr. Potatohead image I have saved.

;)

I think Ron with get Vitaly to play good defense, because he cant be as bad as Miller is on defense(even thought hes been decent lately)

This Monia guy sounds like a steal to me.

Actually I am not too disappointed with this deal. I was REALLY impressed with Vitaly's defense on Duncan last year in the PO's. He played him very very tough. Pretty much saved one of the games with his tough post D. But the deal is truly about Monia. This kid could be real good. I am glad we got one of the young athletes from Portland!

As I mentioned earlier, indeed. He also guarded him very well on a last second shot to beat the buzzer - it hit the front of the rim, Sonics won G3 because of it.

Agreed on Monia.

Vitaly is just a shrug. He's big, and he bangs. Modestly talented down low. No length and can't block shots. Just a big body that is willing to get physical in the post.

And the deal runs the same length as Skinner's.

So maybe it was a bit about getting a bigger truer backup center (Skinner is truly a classicly sized PF), but probably about taking a look at Monia as another young long defensive SF type.

That is ok with me.....Sometimes a change of scenery can do a persons career a world of good. We have been needing a bigger banger....So who knows. If it turns out to be advantagious for us cool...If not...Oh well, what did we really lose......I mean Brian is a great guy, but vastly underused and slightly undersized...This may be a wash, but he may turn out to be a stud....Who knows...Strange things have been happening for us for a couple years now. I am on record as being anti any change. But now that I am used to the dynamics of change and over my insecurities about the old Kings changes, I say what the heck, bring on new bodies and lets see what happens. As you all know, There does seem to be something in the water here that can turn a questionable player into a real stud. Of course and unfortunately, that also goes for visiting players...hehe.

He's not really "bigger" is he? He's 6'10" like 200pounds. Wasn't Skinner like 6'10" and like 200 pounds?

Oh dang!

I just looked them up - I never knew they were that heavy.

He's got Skinner by 20 pounds. Hrumph. Learn something new, eh?

Vitaly isn't fat either. He is just plain HUGE! He is called the "Ukraine Train" for a very good reason. He is the defenition of the term "big body".

Vitaly, Calvin Booth were the twin towers of Seattle...until Drobnjak's Manjac's came and relegated Potapenko to the bench. Other than that I'd say Potapenko is a poor version of Jabari Smith.

Have you ever seen Vitaly ? He's not Big Ben type huge, he's Oliver Miller type huge.

he needs to coral his shot selection, which will come with experience...not sure he's going to get that with us, though. Is in love with the 3 pt. shot, which we definetely dont need anymore of from our players.

Maybe not quite THAT flabby. Actually is very powerful and like an earth-mover down there. But its not all muscle to be sure. Just a big powerful man. Wish there was something else to follow that up with, but that's kind fo the extent of the repertoire. ;)

thank you...'V' as he likes to be known as, isnt much of an NBA speciman. I lived in Boston when he was with the C's, and he was an overachiever there and that did nothing but give him a big head. He started in Boston back in the day, but when they figured out he was big and clumsy they did the smart thing by starting Blount.

Wait. "Big and clumsy"... temporary overachiever with a big head?

So basically you're saying he's the Ukraine version of Joe Kleine?

;)
