Giving Barry his due
by Rick Reilly

Never seen anything like this Fake Break, this Barry Bonds home run record hype. It's like a man robbing a bank and then having a giant party to watch him count the money.

But some dark day soon - and let's hope it's not in front of the Kool-Aid chuggers in San Francisco - Bonds will hit number 756, and the game will be stopped for a queasy kind of ceremony and the enws channels will break away to show it and everybody will be trying to decide whether to stand up or throw up.

So how do you commemorate a dishonest moment produced by a man who has denied using performance enhancers despite a silo of evidence to the contrary? Not to worry. We're here to help.

As Bonds is running the bases, feel free to ...

• Light one of his baseball cards and hold it up like a Bic at a concert.

• Catch the ball and throw it back. You'll never have to pay for a beer the rest of your life.

• Hold up four fingers on each hand - 44 - Hank Aaron's number.

• Hold up a big sign: SEVEN FILTHY SIX.

• Women, pull a black veil over your face. Men, pin on a black carnation.

• Call the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, Calif., and ask to speak to Greg Anderson. He's the convicted steroids dealer - and Bonds' personal trainer and friend - who's spent 10 months in jail for refusing to testify before a grand jury looking into possible perjury and tax evasion charges against Bonds. Ask Anderson what he's going to want from Bonds when he gets out. Like, say, Florida.

• Call the Hall of Fame and ask which cap will appear on Bonds's head in his Cooperstown exhibit - the size 7, the 7 1/2 or the 8?

• Pull out a copy of Game of Shadows - by San Francisco Chronicle writers Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams - and begin reading aloud about how Bonds used steroids, human growth hormone, insulin, testosterone decanoate, bovine steroids and female fertility drugs to help him set this record. And then watch Bonds step on home and point to God.

• If you're watching on TV, flip to something a little more plausible, like MacGyver.

• Hold up a big sign that says 650, which is about how many home runs Bonds would have if you replaced the homer totals from his alleged juicing years (1999 through 2004) with his prejuice pace of 32 per season.

• Send rabbits' feet, four-leaf clovers and two-headed pennies to Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr., letting them know that you're pulling for them to pass Bonds like he's a hitchhiker in an orange jumpsuit.

• Hold up a big sign: FLAXSEED WORKS!

• Jump onto the field and give commissioner Bud Selig a huge, for he's a Milwaukee native who lvoed watching Hank Aaron, and his fondest wish was probably to see Bonds fall down an elevator shaft.

• Get Bonds' autograph at the ballpark - on the bottom of an affidavit that reads "I set this record with the help of performance-enhancing drugs. I am a very large jerk for doing so."

• Squirt juice out of a giant syringe.

• Remind yourself that they put a gold medal around Ben Johnson's neck for a while, too.

The truth is, it won't matter what we do. We live in an era when our Crap Detectors must always have fresh batteries. Every day we use them to decide which numbers are real and which are fake - $90 Enron stock and Donald Trump's handicap and 36 double D's on 100-pound women. And we know this number is fake. And this celebration is fake. And this feat is fake.

Remember this: The man who held the record before Bonds - one of the most principled and honorable men you will ever meet - is reluctant to even speak to Bonds on the phone, much less be there to witness the record breaker. Just because a thief paints over a masterpiece doesn't mean the masterpiece isn't still underneath.

And when the Fake Break is finally over and the confetti is swept up, Barry Bonds will have to go back to the one place where even he doesn't believe the lies.

His mirror.

I'm sorry VF21, I love you and everything, but this post is a peice of s....
It's called a bad journalism, really. Very bad.

You're better than that VF...

That just bad...But since we're on the subject.

You know what I love?

I love it how everyone boos Barry when he comes to the plate, yet they boo their own pitcher/team when they walk him.

And I love how they boo Barry when he comes to the plate, yet every pitch is marked with flashbulbs going off all over the background.

I also love how after Barry hits these homeruns he isn't greeted with a chorus of boos, or a massive walkout, or any other show of disgust.

I love how those merciless Cubs fans, in their historic stadium, full of so much history, booed when he came out, then ferociously booed and threw back his home run balls today as Cubs tradition says...Oh wait...They didn't...Wonder what happened there?

And I am going to love when everyone has to eat their crow when Barry hits the record and isn't turned on, spit on, booed, berated and hated but is met with something foreign to all you haters, but *gasp* the respect and standing O the guy deserves.

I simply posted the article. You can take it or leave it.

Those of you who will stand and applaud Barry Bonds, more power to you. But just realize there are a LOT of people who won't be standing. You don't have to agree with the apparent majority of people but you cannot deny they exist.

Read the other article I posted. Hank Aaron is what the sport should be all about.

Alright, I do know and accept that there are going to be people who will not be standing or cheering...That I can live with.

I just took exception to that terrible 'article'.

Whatever. First home run landed on Sheffield street and the other one was caught by a kid. No matter how hated Bonds is, those balls have value and it would be just dumb to throw back the real ball.

I love it how when Bonds comes to plate the strike zone gets expanded by couple of feet. His first homerun yesterday was legit, but the second onw he struck out about twice, but the umpire let it slide.

I love it how Bonds can sit out "hurt" until he gets to face a pitcher that he knows he can hit against.

With that said, I want Bonds to go on a tear this weekend and crush the Brewers.

Go Cubs.

I don't like Barry Bonds, I hate SF Giants and I don't care about Barry breaking the record because the shadow of steroids is all over the sport, but...

Vilification of Bonds has gone way, way over the top. He is not the Devil.
Are we sure that Barry's impeding record is the only blight on the baseball's books? Barry seems to be catching flack for all that ever went wrong with the sport and performance enhancers in general. He is a lighting rod.
Barry's personality - you know what, I kind of like the fact that there is somebody dishing it out to the media. This morning I read Rick Morissy interview with Barry in Chicago Tribune. I had to laugh, I was 100% on Barry's side, while reading it I was rooting for Barry to go "all the way" and just flat out embarass Morissey.

I don't know Barry Bonds, I don't really know how much of his monster career records is natural ability and how much is chemically enhanced, but I don't really care anymore, because he can't possibly be as bad as media portrays him and not be in an insane asylum or federal pen.

Yeah, Barry is not likeable guy. Maybe. I have seen many-many interviews with him and I have NOT seen anything that would upset people or anything that would be not likeable. The only time when Barry seems angry and agitated is when some fool of the reporter tries to ask him proving himself he didn't take steroids or something about that. But I would just throw a chair at this fool. Barry simple walks away or ask them to talk about the game.

And VF21, it's well known that this Reilly fool has personal grudge against Barry and unluckly for Barry he has a job in SI. This guy wrote so many hit-jobs on Barry and none of them are actual facts!

.....and since we are on the topic.

I find the reporting in this HR issue almost bizarre, or perhaps just uninformed. All we have heard for months and month is that Barry may be breaking this record because he may have used steroids at some point. Some of these HRs may not have happened had he not used...ya da, ya da.

At what point does the national media begin to talk about the role of expansion upon HR hitting. The dilution of great pitching perhaps leads to more HRs by the best hitters. We know for a fact that league expansion has occurred. Furthermore, the strongest statistical evidence for a supposed increase in HR production points to expansion far more than some "steroid era."

I guess expansion just in not sexy enough to talk about so they will just forget it completely even though it is a better answer......it is just irresponsible reporting and I am beyond tired of it.

Reilly

I can't believe the negative response to this. Reilly is one of the most balanced reporters out there. This article is right on the money. Good for Reilly for telling it like it is.

The truth is, it won't matter what we do. We live in an era when our Crap Detectors must always have fresh batteries.
My crap detector has found a sad, sad article from a man with a bent. (and I don't even like Barry Bonds)

I called this a while ago. It is the pathetic last cry of the Bonds haters. They will unite, and have their own celebration of hatred, and they still won't understand that the Bonds supporters just don't care about their uninformed, and partially unjustified whining.

There are plenty of Giants-fans-only hangouts that are filled with much more informed and genuinely good people to talk with about the subject.

The real question is where does SI find thier "journalists"... in a dumpster? Was there like a flea market trying to get rid of garbage reporters in bundles and SI just happened to be passing by? I don't know anyone that actually reads SI anyway so I guess it is just thier company name that is getting continuously smeared with pewp. The only SI magazine I would think about "reading" would be the swimsuit issue. Far and away their only good idea in the history of that company. But I can see why they released this article. Obviously they are desperately trying to get anyone to buy their filth and tried to rally all of the Bonds-haters. Pathetic.

Hate to break it to you but that type of writing resonates with 95% of the country, basically anywhere besides San Francisco and other Giants strongholds.

Whatever.

You can continue to call those of us who aren't dancing in the streets all the names you like. There are a plethora of articles out there that say pretty much the same thing as Reilly, but without the sarcasm.

Look at your own comment. You have to go to a "Giants-fans-only" place to find someone else to cheer about this with? That is pretty pathetic. If you think the fans there are "more informed," fine. Personally, I think any attempt at objectivity stays at the door while you and your other "Giants-fans-only" pretend this is anything other than a tainted record.

Feel free to rejoice about Bonds when he breaks the record. Just don't be surprised when you aren't joined - at least around here - by numerous others.

And please, knock off the "hater" crap. It got very old a very long time ago. A lot of us have put in a great deal of effort trying to be honest and explain why we feel the way we do and, quite frankly, our reponses deserve MUCH better than your default "hater" judgment.

Have a nice day.

I doubt you really "hate" to break it to me but that is besides the point. And you aren't breaking anything to me. I am well aware of the other side and the way they like to judge people. I am also well aware of the hypocracy that comes with the general masses in bringing down so much hatred for one man when there are so many men that are guilty. And so many others have actually been caught and yet they do not suffer in the public eye as Bonds does. I am aware that most of this is about Bonds' perosnality and about the "most hallowed record in sports". I am aware...are you aware? Are you aware that most of us don't really care what 95% of the country thinks even though that number is way bigger than reality? Are you aware that more than 95% of this country is just a bunch of idiots anyway? Are you aware that...oh whats the point, you probably don't care anyway.

What I find just absolutely comical is how the federal grand jury indicted and is now going to trial with Michael Vick in such a short period of time and how the federal grand jury has had years to come up with a case for Bonds and is still reeling for more time to try to put something together. I'm glad this whole Michael Vick thing happened from the standpoint of seeing how quiclky a federal grand jury can act when it has actual proof.

You'd think that if the little Game of Shadows book were 100% true then surely the great Federal Grand Jury would be able to convict Bonds of perjury when he said he didn't take steroids knowingly. You would think...

Oh good grief.

Dude, lots of guys found ways to beat the testing. Bonds among them. The difference is that lots of guys aren't going to get their names in the record books for a very long time because of it. THAT's what has a lot of people upset. Cheaters shouldn't prosper to the extent of having their name forever associated with something they achieved artificially.

95% of the country is idiots? Okay...

I won't resort to sarcasm or snide commentary because I really think you have bought into your own little fable about Bonds. Just like the emperor and his new clothes.

If you want to believe that Bonds is just a poor maligned individual who is going to set a record that will most likely stand for decades based on what a clear majority of people think is a lie, then that is your choice. But you do not have the right to impugn the beliefs of those who haven't put on the Bonds-colored glasses.

Team and player loyalty is one thing. Sacrificing standards just because the guy wearing your team's uniform is about to set a record is ... well, not something a lot of people feel comfortable with.

I took great care not to be insulting or sarcastic. I am not a hater. I am someone who HATES what is being done to baseball, cycling and other sports. And I really hate the idea that some people are looking the other way to justify their heroes.

Whatever.

You post a tasteless article and expect me not to bring out the "hater" generalization?

Just because I call some people haters, doesn't necessarily make it so. But if (person X) hates Barry Bonds, then (person X) is a hater. So you can look at it however you want but some things just are. Don't worry though, when I say hater I'm not implying that (person X) is some sort of monster or anything because they hate Barry Bonds.

I'm not going to get into any sort of discussion with you about it. Frankly I don't think you respect Barry Bonds "the player" enough to justify me talking to you about Barry Bonds "the person". So consider this our last discussion we will have about it until after he breaks the record.

But one thing I want to make clear to you. Hanging out on the Giants blogs is far from pathetic. Nowhere else on the internet have I come across people that are more knowledgable, funny and genunie and for you to condemn them based on the way thatI think is what is really pathetic. There are plenty of Giants fans that live in SF and don't like Barry Bonds. Just like there are plenty of people that live outside of SF and do support/like Barry Bonds even though talk of such a thing is blasphemy. My point of bringing up the Giants blogs is to inform anyone around here who wants to have a decent discussion about the subject can venture there.

Oh yeah, and yesterday I saw another anti-Bonds piece where they showed two pictures of Bonds, one when he was a Pirate and another as a Giant. They had the one as a Giant all zoomed in to make him look so much "bigger". I mean I know he got much bigger and all, but the way the media portrays their hatred of Bonds is laughable and it has gotten to the point where they are getting lazy about it. It will all be over soon, and the passion that fuels the hatred of Bonds will fizzle away like the last ember of a spent fire. And I am willing to let the people have their moment, because I think deep down, history will not see Bonds the same way that most do today.

I will gladly eat my words if Bonds is found guilty of perjury. But the clock is ticking. Tick, tock, tick, tock.

If you want to believe that Bonds is just a poor maligned individual who is going to set a record that will most likely stand for decades based on what a clear majority of people think is a lie, then that is your choice.

Well, I have very good news for you. Bonds career HR record will probably be around for just a few years. ARod stands a very good chance of setting a new all-time record. If ARod does not do it then Albert P. may do it or Ryan Howard may do it.

HR records do not last like they used to..........what is ARod's excuse for hitting so many HRs?.....are all these guys on the juice?

And Bonds is not my hero. I genuinely enjoy watching one of the greatest hitters of all time. Seeing what he is doing now at the age of 43 is amazing, no matter what colored goggles you are wearing.

No one cares if you eat your words. I don't respect Barry Bonds AT ALL, by the way, so don't worry about whether or not I respect him enough. But that's just my personal opinion.

As far as everything else goes, I posted an article. Had I ever seen an article that was supporting Bonds I probably would have posted it, too. I do post a LOT of articles whether I agree with them or not. Evidence: Marcos Breton.

I did post another article about this from today's Bee, so feel free to use it to try and point out the hypocrisies involved. Just make sure you look in the mirror once in a while, okay?

As far as seeing what he's doing at the age of 43, and calling it amazing, that's rich. He's no better than a trained bear at this point, being brought out to entertain. He certainly isn't capable of actually PLAYING the game any longer. It's not amazing. It's actually pretty damned sad.

Come-on. That is not fair. the guy has 19 HRs on the season already. there are a lot of 25 year-olds in the league that would love to have 19 HRs as a season total.

By the way, I am not (nor have I ever been) a Giants or a Bonds fan.

I think I have to agree with the 95% of us that are "ignorant" and can't accept the "greatness" of BB.

I enjoy watching the River Cats. I've been to Dodger games, Angels games, and Giants games, but probably an average of one every two years or so. I am not really a fan of any particular team - if I had to choose one pro team I'd say the Giants with the A's a close second. I can't stand to watch baseball on TV - too boring. This is all just to let you know where I am coming from.

I really can't stand the guy. Both on the field and off, he has done nothing but try to make a mockery of the game by cheating (steroids and other drugs) and then constantly lying about it just so he can break a record. How pathetic is that? He can hit the ball and that's about it. He used to be a great baseball talent, now he's just going up for batting practice every day hoping to break a record so he can finally retire.

I don't like cheats, especially those that rub everyone's nose in the fact they were cheating so they could get ahead.

Hey, if you think he's all that and a bag of chips, good for you. I just really question the value of breaking a record when he had to cheat and basically demolish any respect he had for the game and any moral character he may have started with. What's the fun and challenge of that? How does that make you proud when you look in the mirror?

Coming out to bat against a pitcher you think you can hit is NOT playing baseball. He has 19 HRs but how is his team doing? If he wasn't Barry Bonds and wasn't chasing Aaron's record do you think he'd even be in the lineup?

Well, the Giants do stink. But yes, I think he is a starter on most teams in the league. He sits out games because as a 43 year-old he needs more recovery time. He leads his team in HRs, SLG and OBP. He also has one of the higher BA on the team.

His 19 HRs on the season is actually very impressive given the number of games he has not played.

Umm, 95% was an arbitrary number that was brought up to make a point, it really bears no weight in the conversation.

In fact, this year Bonds was elected to start in the All-Star game which is basically a popularity contest in baseball. He was voted in by millions of people, most of which that live outside of SF. So apparantly there are many people that do respect his greatness. I still do maintain my position that 95% of Americans are idiots. But that is the topic for a different discussion.

FYI it is not about the record for Barry. But most people don't know that. They just assume it is about the record for him. He could care less about the record. That is why he said in an interview with renowned Giants announcers, Krukow and Kuiper, that when A-Rod passes his record he will be there in the front seat cheering him on.

And I find it laughable when people continuously say he "rubs it in their face". Why? Because he didn't bow down and just go away? The only way Barry goes away is if the federal grand jury can actually come up with a case, but it has been years now so I wouldn't hold my breath on it. Expecting Barry to just go away because some people might be mad just makes me laugh, I can't help it, please don't take it personally.

And BTW, the majority of players and coaches throughout the league respect Barry Bonds. Just because most of them don't speak out like Schilling doesn't mean they don't exist. The problem with standing up for Barry in public means you are stand up for steriods and that is why we don't see more of it.

Please stay away from these subjects.

I don't even understand what you are trying to say in the first sentance.

Barry has an OBP of close to .500. Which is absolutely ridiculous, especially at the age of 43. Some of the best names in the game have and OBP of .400. That means that whenever Barry comes to the plate, he has a 50% chance of getting on base. So to answer your question, yes he would be in the lineup. In fact, the Giants would be better as a team if more guys could get on base. The Giants would also be much better as a team if more guys could hit home runs. I know our stadium is not a hitter-friendly park, but we suck at hitting home runs. Barry has 1/4 of the team's home runs....not gonna get it done. The TEAM would be much better if they could play situational baseball too, like scoring Barry when he gets walked a million times. And there are other faults. But I'm sure they mean nothing to you. From your perspective the team must be losing because of Bonds.

And another thing VF, the Giants stink because they kept trying to rebuild on the fly....a situation you might understand being a Kingsfan. Fortunately for Giants fans, it is much easier to build through free agency in baseball than in basketball.

Stay away from these topics? Oh, gee. I'm sorry. Did your feathers get ruffled again?

Do you picture McCovey Cove someday being renamed in Bonds' honor or should they just rename San Francisco San Barry?

Your failure to understand my comment doesn't mean my comment is, in and of itself, wrong. But I'll acquiesce to your oh-so-kind request and not participate any longer. Besides, there's a 2004 World Series of Poker rerun coming on and that, to me, is a lot more exciting than continuing to read rationalizations about the greatness that is Barry Bonds.
