Shaq takes aim at refs, Stu Jackson

Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Shaquille O'Neal didn't mince words about the five personal fouls he got in Miami's loss to the New Jersey Nets, taking aim at referees and NBA senior vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson.

"That was the most ridiculous game I've ever been part of," he said Sunday after the 90-78 loss. "When you got a guy like Stu Jackson at the top, it shows why referees are the way they are. It starts at the top.

"There was a lot of flopping today and they just fell for it. They make these rules up and they don't follow them. We all know there's a double standard. I just wish they wouldn't make it so obvious."

O'Neal picked up two offensive fouls in the first half, one for elbowing New Jersey's Jason Collins in the jaw in the lane. He picked up three more fouls in the third quarter when the Nets outscored Miami 32-19, including two fouls in a span of 11 seconds.

Heat coach Pat Riley added his voice to the complaints.

"There is a huge double standard here," he said. "They got the double forearm on him, they say it's a hand. Shaq's a pretty strong guy, but Collins does a good job on him. He turns in, it's a foul on him. They're pushing and shoving at him all the time."

He said if a team complains too much about it, the league issues a fine.

"We're caught between a rock and a hard place," Riley said.

The NBA on Monday said it was reviewing the comments.

O'Neal is tied for the league lead in personal fouls this season with Atlanta's Al Harrington at four per game.

Hmmmm...

Let me think...

...

Still thinking...

Okay, do I agree there are problems with the officiating? Oh, yeah.

Do I think Shaquille O'Neal is being unjustly targeted? Nope. No way.

As far as teams pushing and shoving at Shaq, well doh. The man is gargantuan. His size alone is a pretty big tip to the scale as far as equality on the court goes. (No pun intended but fully recognized.)

Sure, he probably gets called for some fouls that maybe he shouldn't be called for BUT he also gets away with a lot of stuff because of his size.

I suspect there will be some fairly hefty checks heading to the league office from Miami shortly.

In a correctly officiated game Shaq would foul out in the first quarter of every game he ever played/plays

that wouldn't be correct. Game 6 of WCF in 2002 was much worse officiated. Don't remember him complaining about that one. Shaq is geting older and slower. Since he has got no other skills - he has got to complain. Cry me a river - will You.

Game 6. Enough said.

Edit - I didn't read the thread before I posted (my reaction was immediate). Piksi beat me to it.

lOL

First of all @ Shaq for complaining about the same officials who were his friends not long ago and I have every belief that the same officials will take the heat to the finals and get them the ring this year as well. Shaq knows it very well and Pat Riley knows it as well. Somehow the winning coaches seem to have a very good knack of sending the message across early enough to get the desired results they want.

If the officials did their job right and called the fouls as they are, shaq would foul out by the first half, but at the same time he would take two centers and two forwards with him and there should be atleast 5 flagrant fouls a game on the other team (please go and read the rules regarding the flagrant foul)

Heat is one of the teams that is favored in the league by the officials along with pistons and the spurs. maybe it is star treatment but it does exist.

Oh and regarding game 6, there was game 5 that was before game 6 obviously.

The worst officiated game against him was the Bulls game where he tried to take a slice off of Miller's head. The refs refused to call flagrants on Charles Oakley to teach him a lesson for complaining. At one point, he jumped into his chest with an extended elbow with his fists locked. Nothing. The worst, bar none. And he's really referring to calls going against himself, so Gm6 don't apply. They got outshot by 60 FTs in 5 games vs Detroit and he didn't complain much at all. He only gets pissed when they go against him.

Then there was the game where he dropped the F and S bombs about the refs on live TV, but he really overreacted on that game.

Shaq is losing his quickness, speed, and jumping ability he had years ago. Now he just powers through every defender. I don't think Shaq should be complaining about fouls. There are so many times in a game that he should be getting calls on him, not other way around.

this just shows shaq's arrogance. if it weren't for officials he would only have 1 ring. so STFU shaq.

Shaq didn't do much MVP stuff in the Blazers series beyond Gm1. He was being zoned all series by Sheed/Pippen and Sabonis. You may have a gripe re: 02, but the Porty series was not controversial beyond the whining of Dunleavy and Jackson.

I see the double standard......any other player(or coach for that matter) would have been fined for criticizing the referees. All we have days later is an "investigation".

Coming from the same guy who.....less than a week prior grabbed Jermaine O'Neal by the neck to break up such noise between J. O'Neal and Udonis Haslem.

Shaq, you'll get over it. Quit complaining

Shaq is so funny lol

I love Shaq as a person... and as a player... I know thats a kings fan sin, but I liked Shaq sice he came into the league. Then I hated how he punished us as a laker, but he is a heat now! and i can like him again! woot!

Shaq Rips Into Refs For Second Time
The feud between Heat center Shaquille O'Neal and NBA referees continues. O'Neal expressed his displeasure Wednesday with the officiating in Tuesday night's 115-89 victory against Milwaukee, specifically regarding a play in which Bucks' center Jamaal Magloire grabbed O'Neal from behind. Magloire was whistled for a foul, but O'Neal insisted the ruling should have been a flagrant foul. ... O'Neal said that people have the impression he can take constant punishment because of his bulk. In this case, O'Neal said size doesn't matter. "A pinch is a pinch," O'Neal said. "If you pinch my right nipple, I'm going to say, 'ouch.' If I pinch your right nipple, you're going to say 'ouch.' A foul is a foul and a flagrant is a flagrant." -- Palm Beach Post

You can like Shaq, but I'd strongly recommend AGAINST making a big deal of it around here...

hehe I didnt like him when he was a laker... so I shouldnt have anything to worry about. I will say, the Shaq jersey I got in 96 or 97 has been turned into a laker bashing kings loving wall peice :)

I didn't like Shaq when he played for Orlando...didn't like him on the Lakers,(though glad he was part of the 3peat)...and was happy to see him go...but the league has always loved Shaq so I imagine he'll get away with his stupid remarks.

oh he's one to complain about the officials... just how many fouls per game does he get away with??

"That was the most ridiculous game I've ever been part of," acutally shaq, that would be game 6. you were a part of that one

big oof

So, Shaq gets an "investigation" instead of a fine. Then, of course, he feels free to complain about the refs again. So, my question is: How many times does he get to complain before he is fined....LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE?

You know at this point I can't even work up enough "care" to be angry. It's a sad commentary but it's become the exception that proves the rule as far as I'm concerned. He's going to become a sad caricature of himself within the near future...and that will be the ultimate payback IMHO.

;)

Well...

he got fined for Sunday.

NEW YORK -- Shaquille O'Neal was fined $15,000 Friday for criticizing officials and NBA senior vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson after the Miami center was for called for five fouls in the Heat's loss to New Jersey.

"That was the most ridiculous game I've ever been part of," O'Neal said after the 90-78 loss Sunday. "When you got a guy like Stu Jackson at the top, it shows why referees are the way they are. It starts at the top.

"There was a lot of flopping today and they just fell for it. They make these rules up and they don't follow them. We all know there's a double standard. I just wish they wouldn't make it so obvious."

O'Neal was called for two offensive fouls in the first half, one for elbowing New Jersey's Jason Collins in the jaw. He picked up three more fouls in the third quarter, including two fouls in a span of 11 seconds.

Heat coach Pat Riley also voiced his displeasure with the officiating, but said if a team complains too much about it, the league issues a fine.

O'Neal is tied for the league lead in personal fouls this season with Atlanta's Al Harrington at four per game.

WHAAAAAAAAAAA! I'M NOT ONE OF THE GOLDEN BOYS OF THE NBA ANYMORE LIKE KOBE, AND I'M ACTUALLY GETTING FOULS CALLED ON ME!! WHAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

For YEARS Shaq has gotten away time after time turning and leaning his shoulder in while jumping and NOT getting called for it. That in fac is one of his patented move's. People do the same thing, because of his size and the shoulder lands in a zone and the other person gets a foule. People breathed on Shaq the wrong way and got a foul called on them.

Now he's shell shocked, because he's ACTUALLY getting fouls called on him. Give me an F'ing break.

He is already!! Shaq is just a whining meatball!! I wish Wilt was still with us. He'd be 70 this year, and I'll bet he could still kick Shaq's behind!!
