Sean Singletary

It is been known that now singletary and ewing jr are included in the artest trade. I guess that makes more sense why we signed Bobby brown. But anyways heres the link http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archiv...re_ron_artest/

I don't think that scenario makes sense.

The series of events probably went down like this:
1. Brown was signed because we wanted him as a backup PG and felt he was better right now than Singletary.
2. We negotiated the Artest deal, and found that the salaries would (barely) push us over the luxury tax threshold ($71.15M)
3. We convinced Houston to take two non-guaranteed contracts in the deal to keep us from crossing the threshold.

Houston doesn't actually want Singletary as far as we can tell - they're expected to release him. But we wouldn't have needed to include him in the current Artest deal (for tax purposes) had we not signed Brown. So if we preferred Singletary to Brown we would have just kept Singletary and never signed Brown at all.

Well, I liked Brown last year in a similar effect to how I liked Singletary this year so that lessens the blow, but I still like Singletary a lot and don't like to see him go. At least he'll be with Adelman.

Since those deals are non-guaranteed and we're a long way off from final rosters or luxury tax being locked down, I don't understand the need to handle this via the trade at all.

Brown seems like a very serviceable player, with skill. I think he is a improvement over Singletary. Jackson will be merely a small time role player, so if Brown can impress he will likely see some minutes.

Ewing wouldn't have made the team anyways, he's a horrible offensive player. I was shocked the Kings selected him.

GO Ravens

I believe they're partially guaranteed. But you're right, if we could just cut them rather than send them off in the trade for Houston to cut, that's the reasonable thing to do. It's only speculation at this point that they're part of the trade, but given that they are, the only reasonable explanation I see is that the guaranteed portion of their contracts would push us over the tax. Using the numbers at ShamSports (thank you!) if each were guaranteed $250K it would put us over. Seems like a lot for the guaranteed portion...so I don't know.

Thats the question I want answered. If they're non guarranteed contracts, then why trade them. Just don't guarrantee them before the season starts. Is there something I'm no understanding here?

Well I guess that sort of answers my question. I suspose that if Houston cuts them, and we make another deal that cuts a little more salary, we could always resign Singletery. Or not..

I guess it must be something like that. Amazing that it would come down to such a close shave. One of the Bee articles made it sound like the throw-in part was up in the air and it was possible the finances would be resolved another way. Possibly another deal before 8/14 ends up saving some current year salary and it isn’t necessary to dump Singletary. The Kings appear to feel that Brown is the surer bet or else there wouldn’t be any need to dump SS. I’d still prefer to hang onto him, even if it’s only in the D-League.
