Scouting: Insightful article.

Not sure this is the right forum for this, but every year people on this forum question how much effort is put into scouting players. Gee, I wonder if Vlade ever saw this player play? Gee, if we didn't bring them in for a workout, do we really know anything about them? This article not only gives you a look at the life of an NBA scout, but the work that goes into scouting each player. It's a bit long, but worth the read.

One thing you should come away with is that yes, the Kings, and the rest of the teams in the league spend a lot of time and money trying to find out as much as possible about the players they draft, and also about the players they might trade for.

Great article. Worth taking the time to read it.

It's kind of a risky job. There is some science to it, but you're talking about projecting individual potential which is affected by so many unseen and immeasurable factors. I would hate that kind of work. I don't mind it as a hobby where I know my opinion doesn't determine my future employment :p.

LOL! Yeah, but I think for some it's a labor of love. But your right, there's definitely a lack of job security there. Not the best job for a family man. In many ways though, they are the unsung hero's of the team they work for. A GM is only as good as his scouting dept. I think that's born out by the fact that when asked who had the best scouting dept, they all said the Spurs.

I think this is also evident in King's history. Petrie helped establish a very good scouting dept. when he got here. When the Maloof's money started getting tight, the scouting dept was one of the first places to get cut way back.
