When Jerry Tarkanian looked at his UNLV roster for the 1975-76 season, he saw a need for change.Reggie Theus was the newest addition, a sharpshooting talent out of Inglewood High School who could score in too many ways to sit on the bench.

Haven't we said we're going to be a running team the last 3 or 4 years? It seems every year around this time I see an article in the Bee proclaiming we're going to "push the ball." I'll believe it when I see it....

Although it's been a commonly used phrase, I think it's been more of a "If I wish it, perhaps it will happen" kind of thing until now.

We have a quick team of young athletic players that Reggie would be insane not to utilize to the max. I have to think it's a group of players like this that Geoff Petrie and the Maloofs were thinking of when they hired Theus in the first place.

The problem isn't going to be letting them run. It's going to be NOT micro-managing from the sidelines. When you have players like this, you do not want to rein them in too tightly. It should be more guidance than total control and, quite frankly, I hope Reggie can avoid too many pre-determined plays, etc. It's not going to be easy and Amick has already pointed out in a previous article that Theus is trying to make sure the third year of his contract is picked up. If he doesn't show trust in our young guns and let them make the occasional mistake as they learn their way, this could end up being a very frustrating season all the way around.

I would think it's going to be very important for Petrie and the Maloofs to make sure there's a balance out there. If everything comes together, this could be 1999 all over again.

Actually, if my memory serves, since picking up Artest quickly followed by the one-year experiment of Muss, we've been hearing sweet nothings about becoming a physical, lock-down, defensive-minded team.

This is the first I've read of a return to the run-and-gun style since shortly after the Webber days.

We wanted to be a running team but it seemed Bibby just didn't buy into it. Well he is gone. The pg greatly determines what speed you are running.
