Sac Bee: Monarchs Take Cover and the Resuls are Stunning

#2

It is a different Look thats for sure...

Can't wait to see the rest of the Spread. But the Article makes a point. NBA players do photo shoots all the time. And it is not in the context of Basketball.

Terrell Owen did several shoots to show Is Fabulous Body off. (No Matter what you think he has a nice Body) Montana and Young Did more of their share of Local and national Face Cake on the Mags.

So what is the big deal? Besides Ticha and Nicole dress "FEMMY" all the time when not on the court, and Yo isn't some "Butch Monster". So again if the local paper want to give the girls a different look no big Whoop.

Kinda wish DeMya was in the Mix. She is definately the Diva, but I guess we have already seen her in her Flawless Gear.

I have no problem with it....::caveat approaching:: as long as it is not the league or the team's only idea of marketing which was the huge problem I had with the "This is Who I Am" campaign.

The other way I don't have a problem with it is if there is a balance in opportunity for cover shots and photo spreads which has the players in uniform. I don't think the criticism of the Flavor cover is entirely valid, because it does take on the Vanity Fair/GQ look. I'd have an issue with it if the magazine was Sacramento Sports and this was the cover.

LILCRC called it "the This is who I am NOT" Campaign.
Or The "What the Hell Is this" Campaign.

It would be nice to get the contrast. In Uni and Out. 6 page spread... Can someone Pic up a Copy for me. Dying to see Yo in a Skirt. And Chaka Khan with all that Hair. A must see.

Ok folks....no word from Melody Gutierrez yet (darn that pre-holiday schedule) but I've done some investigating and here's what I've found out. For those of you who might be familiar with "Fork It" Magazine(I wasn't until today)..., Flavor is its new name. So theoretically everybody who carried that should have this one.

But.....I was able to find a tel # for ForkIt and from that I was able to locate a weblog for the mag. The magazine won't likely hit the stands until later this week. They are having a launch party for Flavor this Friday @ The Park Downtown (which is on the corner of 16th and L....(Field trip anyone? I'm sooooooo there)

I've heard little things about The Park from my friends. Supposed to be a nice place. There's a $20 - $25 cover charge to get in, with a strict dress code.

So what do we know about this launch party, and/or how can we find out?

Cause I'd like to go... but I don't know if I would want to go in to the Park! Even though I've heard it's a nice place and they play good music and even have a nice restaurant inside.

Hey MBF...I Would love to go, that sounds like fun & I will be on vacation!
Let me know if any fans want to get dressed up & go! I'll wait to hear more details & if it's open to anyone. Thanks MBF!

Not all that complimentary for $20-$25. ;)

BTW, I think it is an elegant and beautiful picture. It is also a sensual pic. That is different than sexual. People who want to read sexual undertones, or lesbian undertones.....its in you're dirty little minds. You're looking at it that way. I''m referring to some comments in the article.

As to being demeaning, blah, blah, blah. I'm an ol'-time "feminist," and I get tired of the extremes. Yes, I don't like women portrayed as only worthwhile for their bodies. However, the Monarchs have been portrayed many times as great atheletes, strong and intelligent. Heck they were a a Wheaties box in their uniforms.

And its not like male atheletes don't appear in pictures designed mainly to show their physical attractiveness. Ticha, Yo and Nicole are more covered up in that picture than a huge number of women I see everyday out in public. I showed more than that in halter tops, minis and hot pants. (God I'm old!)

What bugs me is the idea that in order to not be "demeaned," some folks seem to think that you have to give up being a woman and showing that you are womanly and attractive. Good grief, that's just as bad as showing women as only sex objects. I'll be grateful for the day that women can be appreciated for their abilities, talents and brains, without having to pretend their not women.

(puts soapbox in the corner....sorry:eek: )

Very well put KennaDog...I agree it is very sensual & it's different for them as well. I always like seeing them in street clothes, we women like fashion & I for one admire the slick outfits they wear outside of basketball. When their playing I always check out the shoes...luv me some shoes!

Well, 7734, I assumed they meant THE PARK! This is a place with a cover charge? Ah, well, it's only money:eek:

Check out the web page - this is that place where you can lounge on a bed and eat with curtains drawn!!!

While I think I agree in principle with what Kennadog says here's where I differ. I'm past the word "demeaning" because I don't think it necessarily is the case when photos like this are shot for the sake of art or imagery. Where it becomes problematic for me is that oftentimes the only way female (athletes or not) make the cover of magazines is if there is a sensual side to the picture. If other locals make the cover of this magazine and do so in the same or similiar sensual fashion then I don't think folks really raise an eyebrow, least not enough to have a column written about it. But from what I saw from a cover past issue of ForkIt which had Chris Webber on the front (Peja also had a cover, although I didn't see it, Artest has an issue feature but I don't know if he was on the cover) his wasn't like this. Knowing now that this is a new launch of a new magazine I can see why the article was written and why the cover is provocatively artistic.

Fans wanting a copy of Flavor magazine, which features an article and photo spread of Monarchs players Griffith, Ticha Penicheiro and Nicole Powell, can go to theflavormag.com.

Cover charge prior to 10pm is $15.

Dress Code: pretty standard. Jeans are ok just need to be fashionable, no baggin' or saggin' (as the youngsters say ;)) No sports shoes, flip flops etc. No sports wear or t-shirts. Men, you have to wear collared shirts.

And I noticed I did it again...::sigh:: I'm always a street off when it comes to downtown... The Park Downtown/Masons/Ma Jongs is on the corner of L and 15th.

Ok, more info from my friends concerning The Park:

When they went there, they had dinner at the restaurant and then were able to get into The Park without paying cover. They said that once you are in the building, you're in. They just had to wait at the bar in the lounge for awhile before the club opened up. Don't know if they still do this. Also, my friend told me that another one of her friends went in a big group once and some of the girls were turned away. Their jeans weren't "designer". She also told me that this was when the place was new and they were trying to keep it more of an "exclusive" club. They *might* not be as strict these days. I know that the radio station 100.5 The Zone is there on the weekends now, so they might be easing up on their crowd.

Anyone up for dinner & festivities? I plan to go for sure. Is it still from 8-10?
I'm up for a 6pm or so. Lets get this party started!
Great job everyone for getting the details. Should be a kick.

Sounds like fun!!! Oops, just checked the calendar and I have an appointment that usually runs too long, I won't be done 'til about 7, in Roseville. I still plan to come, just will be late.

Interested in The Park, but not sure of the venue.

Kris and I are contemplating a 6:00 arrival too. Seems a bit over-the-top at The Park, but if we go early, maybe we can cut out shortly after 8:00. I went to Joey B's had a great time, even though they lost big, and was wondering who is who from the forum. I read and enjoy everyone's comments often but usually don't contribute.

#26
Were you at Joey B's for the Seattle game? (I mean, shoot-they've lost big so many times I've been there I've lost track ;))

We'll figure out a meeting spot in front of Mason's so we all can gather for dinner. If we can start a head count we can perhaps reserve a table.

#28
Eh...we might want to head over to Ma Jong's for dinner and then hit the lounge from that direction. I'm all for upscale dining and all, but Mason's might be a little too upscale for my palate. But I'm open for new adventures....
But then we have to add in the cover charge, right? $15? How about we all hide under the table and one of us orders... heh heh

#29
Unless I'm mistaken...Ma Jong's connects to both the Park and Mason's....it's all one complex w/a courtyard. I've only been in Ma Jong's for lunch, but I know it connects...just not sure about how you enter the Lounge portion of it w/o having been to either restaurant - which has to be the point at which you'd pay the cover charge.

That's why what MamaB posted makes sense to me in terms of "once you're in you're in."

#30
I concur with the notion that once you are in Ma Jong's, you are in. I am afraid I am not like some of the high roller Kings fans and would want a more reasonably priced dinner. Heck, I will have to forgo the crummy jeans Friday at my office already to get in!
