With tonight's clinching game of the Miami-Boston NBA Eastern Conference finals approaching, it's a great time to put the kibosh on all the LeBron James-bashing.
Yes, he dumped Cleveland. Yes, he starred in that stupid show.
But the league's MVP, who will shoot-rebound-pass-defend the Heat into a much-anticipated NBA Finals matchup with Oklahoma City, didn't become the villain without an influential supporting cast.
Remember, the Cavaliers had seven years to build a championship roster around James, and they failed. Remember, too, that when James was wooed to South Beach by his friend Dwyane Wade and the allure of working for Pat Riley, the Heat scheduled that ridiculously tacky celebration before James, Wade and Chris Bosh had won a single game. That's on management, not on the player.
James has been humbled and ridiculed long enough, which brings us to tonight's Game 7 in Miami. This time, James is not going to stumble, not going to disappear, not going to become weak-kneed. He's not that player anymore (see his 45 points, 15 boards, five assists in Game 6). He scores, he rebounds, he passes, he defends – and he leads.
Though it took him longer than Larry, Magic and Michael – MVPs who made their teammates better – James is inching closer to that NBA Finals rematch with ... himself.
It's time to forgive, forget and appreciate.
