Rumor: Artest for Josh Howard(DAL)

Here's another. Discuss.
The talk here continues to be about the future of Ron Artest. Dallas reportedly has had internal discussions about the Kings' mercurial power forward and may be willing to part with its own enigmatic forward, Josh Howard, to get him. The Lakers -- who have dangled Lamar Odom -- continue to be regarded as the favorites, with their willingness to swallow the remaining two years and $16.5 million of Kenny Thomas' contract considered the only holdup.

This is the weakest trade proposition of the current three rumored for Artest. Howard has 2 years left on his contract, and is an isolation player like Salmons...doesn't really solve any problems for the Kings, minus a few (but not all) character issues.

I say as long as you can unload RonWillBill and Kcry9 off the roster, either of those propositions would be awesome!

I don't understand why the media keeps hyping up our trading away KT as the hinge in any L.A. trade.

It might have been a difference maker a season or two ago when KT had a lot of years left on his contract, but now it is right on the verge of actually being valuable to us. We can keep it as an expiring and open up money for the '10 offseason, or trade it away once it becomes an expiring to someone else desperate to make room for '10 if the right opportunity presented itself. The only downsides to having him on the team is that he wastes a roster spot and some of the Maloof's cash, otherwise it doesn't matter.

Opening up that money a little earlier shouldn't be all that important since the '09 free agent class is not as strong in quality players as '10. It shouldn't be a deciding factor unless Petrie feels really strongly that he has a good shot at someone that would vastly improve the team, and I am not sure who that would be.

Maybe if he thought someone like Boozer or Okafor would push us over the top, and thought we could clear off enough cap to be in the hunt for them, but otherwise I don't think it is worth it. My personal feelings are that I would rather see us get a young prospect and/or a 1st rounder (even if it is a mid-late 1st) than trade Artest and KT just for an expiring like Odom or Marion.

horrible trade idea... how about artest/beno/thomas for kidd.... lol...

I will copy a post I made previously about a Ron for Howard swap:

I do NOT want this deal to go down. If you guys think Ron is a black hole, just wait for Howard.

Consider this:

The Mavs have played a slower tempo this season compared to previous years. The team's pace factor this season is 90.2, meaning they average that number of possessions per 48 minutes. Howard averages 36.3 minutes per game, and as the second option, he puts up 16.4 FGA and 2.2 AST.

Now, the Kings played faster than the Mavs this season, with a pace of 94.7. Ron leads the team in FGA, and handles the ball a lot more than Martin, so he can be called the team's first option. On a faster paced team, and being the first option, he averages 16.9 FGA, and 3.5 AST in 38.1 MPG

What does that mean? It means that Howard, playing fewer minutes than Ron, and being the second option on a team that has less possessions than SAC, still puts up the same amount of shots as Ron, and has less assists. Ouch. Granted, his turnovers are lower, but that's about it. His defense isn't as good as Ron, and his FG% isn't better. He shoots .455, and .319 from 3, while Ron shoots .453 and .380 from 3.

Not to mention Josh was a no-show against the hornets in the playoffs, and he brings his own baggage with team distractions.

If you take this into account, and his contract deal into account, where he's making roughly 21 mil over the next two seasons, and take into account the team's talent, IMO it's better to stick with Ron and the options that brings.

I would rather have Ron walk after the season than to take on Howard.

It truly is humorous how many of you think Brad Miller and Josh Howard are the only two people in the NBA that smoke pot.
