Rudy Gay to Atlanta trade proposal:

Why would we trade Rudy? I remember the pre- Rudy years, we went year after year without a starting quality SF
Rudy in Memphis at the 3? Yes Rudy at the 4 in Toronto - No Rudy at the 3 here first several years - Yes! Rudy at the 4 under Karl - No!
Rudy at the 3 under DJ - Yes!!!!!
Rudy has always played the 4 when requested, but he struggles getting his shots against bigger PF, He is bigger than most SF and can shoot over them better
He also can defend smaller SFs better
I like our players at SF, Rudy and Omri are a very good SF crew, Just leave them out of the 4 position
I love our 3 bigs Cuz,Kosta at C and WCS at 4
OUR PROBLEM IS OUR BACK COURT!!!
The good playoff teams have back courts that have great 3 point shooting and scoring AND can play Defense!
I have enjoyed Rondo , He shines at assists, running the offense, but he is not a great shooter or defender
and might cost too much to resign

So priority in Draft at 8 and Whatever big dollars we can muster in FA needs to go to back court
DC,#8,FA, resign Curry
A fourth Big ( cheap)
Trade Ben, and/and or Belli for ?
(maybe a Pick to use on a 4th big or a 4th Big)
I don't think that Vlade and the FO are going to be as quick to get rid of Gay as the fans who are by nature very fickle and suffer from a couple of syndromes "what have you done for me lately' and "the grass is greener on the other side".

I think the team is in no hurry to trade Gay and the talk that Rudy and Cousins don't fit well together is just Karl rubbish. They fitted just fine before Karl rolled into town.

Having said that, Gay is 30 and from here on in, it is likely that he starts losing some athletic ability which impact his production at both ends of the court, esoecially defensively. Based on that I think that we are open to getting a younger veterans back in return and by that I don't mean role players. I mean player of at least equal talent level and ability as Gay only younger and doesn't necessarily mean a SF. I think the front office wants to get younger but not too young, more of a young veteran types in similar age bracket as Cousins so that the core can stay intact for the duration of Cousins' prime years.

For example they might be willing to trade Gay in a package with the pick and fillers for Jimmy Butler. Probably not enough but that is probably the type of young veteran that I am talking about. A border line all star or an all star level talent.

I think one thing is for certain, they won't give Rudy up for nothing or some of the average deals that have been suggested around here.

I agree. Even if we were to get lucky and get Murray or Hield, I would prefer that they didn't start. I'd like to see them come off the bench under less pressure. Let them get their feet wet get needed experience. So that would mean signing an experienced SG to start. Kent Bazemore anyone?
Bazemore is entering his prime years and would be my #1 free agent target. However, if we draft say Brown and we are convinced he is our future starter at that position, it might be more prudent to sign someone like Courney Lee as a free agent to start at the position for a season or two before he transitions into a reserve role and Brown becomes the starter.

If we don't end up with a SG, then I would have Bazemore as our #1 free agency target. He will get a big contract no doubt.

As a #1 target Fournier > Bazemore he's like 4 years younger and way more talented on offense/playmaking and could develop into a All Star/near All Star. Both will get massive money and while Baze is clearly a better defender you don't pay guys like him top dollar (I would love him on the team), Evan you could argue that he might eventually deserve that top dollar is he does not now.

In an ideal world if the Thunder fail and KD leaves I would offer the Thunder 8th pick/Rudy Gay for Serge/late 1st rounder (huge risk due to his contract length) and sign Evan Fournier and try offload KK/Marco for whatever else we can scrap to help us.

Cousins/WCS
Serge/WCS/Acy
(physical defender e.g Solomon Hill/PJ Tucker/Lance Thomas)?/Casspi
Fournier/Ben
Collison/?

First and foremost this team needs a proven perimeter defender and Evan is not it. Nice shooter and playmaker who is a RFA so the offer will need to be GIGANTIC to get him and scare Magic away from matching

Sorry, but it's pretty funny, you make a point about not giving up Gay after a down year under clearly negative circumstances and very likely motivation issues (absolutely agree on this), but then turn around and argue for the guy, who played more minutes this season than his whole career before, so he certainly qualifies for 'what have you done for me lately'.
BTW Atlanta Hawks was outscored and had worse defense with Bazemore on the floor. Now obviously most minutes for Baze came against starting quality lineups this season, and Hawks of previous season with Carroll in his place were worse on D than their bench, where Baze was at that time, but here is the comparison between 2 years:

I listened to a podcast recently, and one of the guys talked about a neat trick on finding out team's most valuable player: +/- is obviously very flawed statistics, but comparing team's overall +/- and team's +/- w/o a certain player reveals a lot. Warriors become mediocre without Steph or Draymond on the floor, Cavs drop badly without LeBron, Knicks - without Melo, Clippers - without Paul, Pacers and George - same story, and everyone here knows, what the result is for the Kings. Works every time as long as you look among top-7/8 guys, small sample can obviously spit out wacky results.
Now turning to Fournier Magic were perfectly fine with him spending time on the bench, but they really suffered without Oladipo. Maybe Evan will work better in a different role, but that's what it was this past season.

Sounds interesting I'm not claiming Fournier is the saviour I just think he's the only guy from the FA (that's realistic) that can get much better and has natural skills/smarts to really develop into more I just don't see that in anyone else unless we trade for other young players. To me Rondo/Anderson are just not worth the big money and Bazemore played to well for him not to be grossly overpaid without much upside.

Can you do that calculation/trick for Gerald Henderson/Lance Thomas (just curious cause they are guys I would like to go after as well)?

BTW can I have a link to the podcast sounds like it's worth a listen?

Wow you couldn't have misread my point by a larger margin even if you tried! straight through to the keeper it seems!

Regarding Gay this is a guy with a proven track record in the league. One of the better SFs out there and a proven 20 ppg 2nd option who can create his own shot. He had a down year and all of a sudden people are jumping on him and want to dump him because he is no good, blindly ignoring how he was used the whole freaking season and not even considering what his strengths are. The level of misuse of Gay by Karl this season is at the same level as Keith Smart turning Tyreke Evans into a SF who stayed in the corner as a spot up 3 pt shooter.

People express similar opinion on Kofus and Belinelli. These are veterans with years of bodywork behind them in different systems, with consistent play off experience and in Marco's place a championship ring. These guys didn't magically forget how to play the game, they have notoriously been mis-used.

On Bazemore, I absolutely agree that this has been his best season but he also performed as a started on a play off team. He also happens to be the right age which ties into my first post regading team wanting to get younger vets and he is a player who theoreticallyis about to enter his prime basketball years.

So my choice of Bazemore is based on the following criteria:

1. Our biggest need being a SG
2. The SG needing to be a strong defender who can defend his man straight up or be a part of a good team defensive sheme.
3. The SG needs to be a good to great 3 point shooter to spread the floor.
4. The SG needing to be in the right age profile so that we get a core of key players around Cousins' age who can be the foundation of the team for years to come.
5. Ideally the SG would be a good ball handler and a passer but now we are entering into the All-Star territory and none of them seem abailable.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the grass being greener on the other side it has everything to do with ticking off those needs and Bazemore happens to be the best of the lost that fits most of the key needs. Hell I would be happy with Lee but in a couple of years time we are again on the lookout for the same type of player.

Those and only those are the reasons why I would have Bazemore as the #1 free agent target with the intention of keeping Cousins and Gay duo together. Now if you tell me that Gay is part of the package for a genuine #2 option SG who can create his own shot and defend (e.g. Jimmy Butler) then I have very little interest in Bazemore. I start focusing on other areas that all of a sudden become a need (e.g. A full sized 3 and D starter level SF think Carroll or Crowder if they were free agents).

I have no agenda in this other than wanting to build around Cousins and build a team that will make the play offs next season but the key players need to be in the same age profile as Cousins himself.

There's no denying, that Baze is a good defender, but his ability to replace Carroll and make one of the best NBA's offensive units into a mediocre one makes me wonder, if he's a problem offensively, not Tony Allen/Andre Roberson level, but not far off, given that he was pretty mediocre talent up to this season.

The main idea behind my answer was, that if Magic somehow decide, that Fournier is their SG of the future, Kings should do everything possible to acquire Oladipo: over last couple of year he is above .400% on 2pt shots from 10 feet out (most of them unassisted), and this year his corner 3 got over .400% as well, so Victor is about to breakout into a 2-way star.
I think for Henderson/Thomas it's starting to get into that grey area of lower minutes/mostly competing versus benches, so it starts resembling simple +/-, which is situation-dependent, but anyway
season-----------------poss-------------ORtg---DRtg
Knicks-----------------7655------------105.2---108.0
Knicks w/o Lance----5075------------104.6---108.4
Blazers----------------8954------------108.8---108.5
Blazers w/o Hendo--5660------------110.1----109.3

As for podcast, I think, it was brew hoop one, Bucks' forum from sbnation.com. They are obviously talking mostly about the Bucks, so not sure, if it would be that interesting overall.

I really think that had a lot more to do with Korver's injury after having a shooting season for the ages last season he was never the same after he got injured last year and he was a huge key to there offensive success and the fact they managed to smash out 60 wins last year.

Can we agree that both Carroll and Bazemore are good defenders, and if you forget the who they were on the floor with stats, and just look at their individual defensive ratings, Bazemore had a rating of 100.0 last season, and Carroll had a rating of 104.0 last season. Carroll had a rating of 104 the previous season and Bazemore a rating of 102 the previous season. Most of the players on the Kings have ratings in the 108 to 110 range. Bazemore would be a lock down defender by comparison. By and large, I've found that if you go with individual ratings, your right about 90% of the time. Bazemore also passes the eye test, and that means more to me that a bunch of stats. You can see if someone is defending well or not, and you don't need a bunch of numbers on a page to confirm it.

At no point did I suggest, that Baze is not a good defender, but turning back to individual rating, he had ORtg of 94 and 99 the last two years with Atlanta. Just as a baseline Carroll went from 117 ORtg with Hawks to 100 with Raptors, confirming that starting alongside 4, even if minor, offensive triple-threats (well, Korver is a double-threat, but his shooting counts for 2 skills) can hide your offensive ineptitude.

Honestly, I think that his (bazemore) stats shouldn't even be argued about because he's leagues better than anything we've had at SG for a while. I think he's a realistic target for us but I'd still like us to pursue Fournier as well. I'd like to see Lance Stephenson on our bench to back our starter up too.

I'd rather throw money at Crabbe.....not even sure where he stands as a defensive presence, but offensively, he knocks down open shots. We don't even have that.

Sorry, that's what I get for speed reading. I agree on the offensive part and I'm not sure who to blame as to the overall reason. Bazemore is an easy target, and may be the right target. Frankly, I'm not concerned that much about his offense. There are other players out there that I would covet over him, but in most cases they're too expensive, or you would have to trade to acquire them.

My reason for targeting Bazemore is that he's young, he's improved his game every year, and he can defend, something the Kings desperately need. However, if he suddenly becomes super expensive because of lunacy around the league, then I would turn my attention elsewhere.

Well Crabbe had a defensive rating last season of 110, which is worse than Rondo's defensive rating, which wasn't good. About the only thing that Crabbe does better than Bazemore is shoot the three. Crabbe is a good shooter and always has been. He's not a good rebounder averaging just over two a game. He's only had one good year in his three years in the league, and that's this past year, so your betting he'll come to the Kings and replicate that.

Bazemore, while not as flashy on offense, has been a more consistent player overall in his four years in the league. He's a far better defender, and a better rebounder. He averaged over 5 boards a game last season. On the three teams where he's gotten significant minutes of playing time, he's averaged 36.4% from the three. The two teams where he averaged around 5 minutes a game, he only shot around 26% from the three. So the more he plays and gets into the flow, the better he plays and shoots the ball.

On the surface, Crabbe, at least so far, has the appearance of a one trick pony. Which is fine if that's all your looking for. Bazemore has the appearance of a more well rounded player.

You get Crabbe for the shooting, the same reason we went after Bellinelli, to knock down shots, unfortunately Marco got turned into some type of come off screens and knock down shots off the curl guy when he should have been spotted up. You get Bazemore for more all around game but he's going to cost quite a bit of money.

My assumptions are:
Hawks want him back
There will be 3-4 other teams, willing to pay "market" price for him
Shumpert got $10m per last season and he's a worse shooter, Carroll at 29 y.o. got $14m, and cap raises by 50% over the next 2 off-seasons.
I don't see, how Baze gets less than $15m, and Kings will have to go over that.

Crabbe is getting the same money around $15m as a few others sought after swingmen. Quite a big difference from Beli's $6m.
