Rudy Gay (AND Steve Novak)

RunNGun

G-League
I am personally not convinced that this trade would be a good one, but our hole that the SF position is so big that something needs to be done.

Sacramento Kings send:
Marcus Thorton
John Salmons
T. Outlaw

Raptors send:
Rudy Gay
Steve Novak

Why the Kings do it:
Rudy Gay is a major upgrade over Salmons. Heck, Steve Novak might be an upgrade (I almost threw up when I thought about that). Rudy is overpaid, but his contract ends after next season and thus won't bog down the Kings salary for too long. If he plays well, we could re-sign him later to a reasonable contract for his talent (9-10 million maybe). And Novak shoots threes. MT's departure opens up minutes for the rest of our guards.

Why the Raptors do it:
The Raptors are floating close to the luxury tax. Salmon's contract is non-guaranteed next year (1 million only) and T. Outlaw's contract is one year shorter than Novak's. Rudy hasn't lived up to his contract and Toronto has waited long enough. His PER and efficiency was way down last season so they just might be willing to let him go.

Why the Kings don't do it:
If the Kings have a plan to acquire any major free agents next off-season, then Rudy's contract would make things almost impossible to happen. Rudy is like a not so good Carmelo Anthony (high usage rate) and might not mesh well with our Cousins dominated offense. Rudy seems to be declining, but a change of scenery could change everything. He's only 27 now.

Why the Raptors don't do it:
Makes the Raptors worse for now and they are lacking talented SFs. Raptors are already loaded with SGs and don't need MT.

Rudy wouldn't make anyone on the Kings better. And, as you pointed out, he would take away from DMC.

No thanks.

I would trade MT, Salmons and PPat for Rudy Gay. Toronto gets 10 mil in expiring, "movable pieces" and out from under that 19 mil player option for next year. The Kings get a legit #2 option for Cousins in a SF who defends, rebounds and scores in double digits. This also clears the glut of bench quality players at the 2,3 and 4 for the Kings. Next year Rudy Gay is a huge expiring if he does not work out.

I mean if he came here and played within the team concept of him playing off Cousins than I would have no issue giving up 2 negitive pieces to get him but only if he's willing to focus more on defense rather than jacking. Plus if his chucking gets out of hand Cousins can smack the living crap out of him.

He won't change he is who he is. I truly believe our SF is coming at draft night either in the draft
( parker or wiggins) or trading our pick.

We might be able to get these 2
Jeff Green (if celtics finish in top 5)
Gallanri (same)

He was not this bad in Memphis but, where he was more a #2 option in Toronto he's got the ultimate green light here he would not have that.

From 2007 to 2012 Gay shot at around 46% from the field. In his last year in Memphis and in Toronto his shooting percentages have dropped. If there is any hope, he can get back on a more efficient track, Gay might be a good addition for the Kings. Due to his short contract duration the risk is quite low and Gay might be one of the few solid SF, that are available for the garbage the Kings can offer. If you have nothing to offer, you have to take risks, or you have to be superior in scouting and developing players, like the suns did in the case of Plumlee.

I agree on top of that it takes all the pressure of #M16 if he's in the starting line up meaning he will have lots and lots of high % shots with Cousins & Gay out there to deflect all the attention of him, it will perfectly suit his game at this point in time to be the #3 option. Rudy this season has been awful shooting but beinga #2nd option will help that plus already in 8 games he has 15 steals 7 blocks and is averaging 7.3 rebounds a total which decimates anyone not called DeMarcus on our team. The guy while he is an idiot when it comes to shot selection can get it done in many areas. Vasquez would look a lot better as well imo with Cuz,Rudy,M16 out there, Rudy is a guy no matter how bad he's shooting you still have to honour as a scoring threat and he does hit a load of game winner/clutch shots in his career.

Imo we would be robbing Toronto with this deal we got a insanely atheltic wing combination for Vasquez to feed on breaks/half court and most importantly our future Mclemore will develop freely without any pressures and while Cuz might average a couple shots less he will have plenty of offensive rebounding chances/easy putbacks when Rudy attacks the rim and most likely be facing less doubles.

Z-Bo averaged 15.8 and 16 shots the two full seasons with Rudy spliting the #1 go to guy role which was more than Cousins in 2011 (when he averaged his career high) and I'm sure the first thing that would be explained to him when he comes to Sac Town would be who is the number #1 man in town when it comes to shots.

i wouldn't look at it like Gay would take shots from Cuz. Look at it like Gay would take shots from Salmons and MT and Ppat and Vasquez. Plenty of shots to go around for 2 top guys. I mean nobody was worried about who got shots Shaq or Kobe. they both did. It was the others that got left out. With thease team that is a good thing. leave the others out.

I am no fan of Rudy Gay, and think he is terribly overrated both in terms of what he is now and his potential.
But I have no problem turning MT, Salmons, and whatever piece into 19 million expiring deal for next season.
Not to mention he plays a spot where this team has nothing.

Then instead of a small amount of capspace this year to waste on another 7th/8th man talent, they will be forced to wait and have a nice chunk for next year.

I'm not sure I would do it. I don't like Gay and I don't see him as a long term solution. Having said that, by doing this trade, our team gets better. Our SF position is finally filled with a legitimate SF that can play second fiddle to Cousins. The problem I have with our team getting better is we likely wont get as high of draft pick, and since I would prefer us not to keep Gay in the future, we pretty much would trade a higher pick for more cap space the following offseason. Now if we were an attractive location for free agents, that might not be much of an issue. However, this is Sacramento. If we aren't getting a legitimate #2 option back in a trade that will be with us long term, then I say we ride it out with our roster for the year, draft a young stud, reevaluate the team, and begin to make roster moves.

In general, the reason why most teams get stuck in mediocrity is because they acquire their role players or surrounding pieces first. These players are generally decent enough to keep the team out of a high pick. I would prefer it if this team did not get marginally better this season for the sake of giving us a chance to land a core player. We have two right now (Cousins and McLemore). Let's hold on for one more year and get a third and then begin to improve the makeup of our roster.

I was extremely excited this offseason because I finally thought we had our 3 core players (Cousins, Evans, and McLemore), but with the departure of Evans, I knew we were going to have to wait at least one more year to try and land that missing piece in next years draft. I know it's frustrating, but it will be better for the team in the long run. Patience Kings fans. Our time is almost here.

If it were for thornton salmons and thompson for gay and Aron gray.
We get rid of the negative and pick up a real center with the hope that gay can keep his shot attempts to 12-15. I'm sure malone can turn him into a all nba defender

this kinda makes sense, if it is true that gay is expiring next year. low risk 1.5 season tryout. maybe malone miraculously gets him to buy in. if he play well: trade asset. if he stinks: cap space. rudy gay has enormous talent. just need to knock some sense into him.

Ahhhh, who is the real center? And when did JT become a negative?

I agree with you. If you can unload a couple of salaries of players that aren't in our future, for a player that's superior to just about anyone on the team, like his style of play or not, then you do it. It could make you a player in the freeagent market a year earilier than expected. I'd trade Thornton, Salmons, and Pattterson. Tried it on ESPN Trade Checker and it works.

Slightly different trade in the end, but those of you in favor win the Internet today.

The fact we threw in Hayes is a bonus.

Rudy gay isn't a lost case. Still young enough.

I look at this trade as a push financially, at least as far as ending contracts go, and a possible plus in talent. And make no mistake, Gay is a very talented player. If Malone can tame him a bit, he could become our number 2 guy. If not, his contract ends after next year just like Hayes and Thorntons does, so no weeping there. If he decides he doesn't like it here, and opts out, well then we've rid ourselves of some contracts and were a player in the freeagent market a year earlier than we expected. So basicly we've traded in a few of our old 1985 models for a used 2008 model, and were taking it for a test drive for a year an a half.

But the guy driving now can't see over the steering wheel.
