Rookie's time might have arrived

First-round draft choice Kevin Martin made his first significant contribution of the season in the Kings’ 109-102 victory over the host Utah Jazz on Friday night. Martin had season highs of 19 minutes and six points.

Kings sixth man Bobby Jackson was nowhere to be found in Salt Lake City during Friday night's 109-102 victory over the Utah Jazz.

However, first-round draft choice Kevin Martin said he thought about the way Jackson - who did not travel with the team and is expected to have surgery this week on the torn ligament in his left wrist - does his job.

"I do let the game come to me, and that can be a bad thing or a good thing," said Martin, who made his first legitimate contribution of the season in the Kings' win. "But I thought about the way Bobby gets himself going when he gets into the game and brings that spark. I've always been a scorer. And I think early on I was feeling out the players and didn't want to step on anybody's toes."

But the Kings didn't make Martin the 26th pick of the first round for him to be tentative. The 6-foot-7 guard was the nation's No. 2 scorer in Division I, averaging 24.9 points at Western Carolina, because he attacked offensively and used his athleticism, size and ability to score from the perimeter as well as drive and draw fouls.

Jackson's injury has left a void in Sacramento's guard rotation, opening the way for Martin and free agent Maurice Evans to display their talents.

They'll likely play tonight when the Kings (18-9) host the San Antonio Spurs (25-6).

Kings coach Rick Adelman said Martin, who turns 22 on Feb. 1 and made himself eligible for the NBA draft as a junior, has been playing well in practice.

"The thing I liked about Kevin (against the Jazz) was that he was aggressive," Adelman said of Martin, who had played a total of 36 minutes in 10 games before receiving 19 minutes Friday night.

"He has had a tendency to lay back, but he's long and quick and gets some things done at both ends of the floor," Adelman said. "Both Kevin and Maurice are good defenders."

Peja Stojakovic said he wasn't surprised by Martin's performance against Utah.

"It's a matter of how long it's going to take him to feel comfortable in games," Stojakovic said of Martin, who scored six points. "He played really well.

"He's a good player. He's just inexperienced, and once he gets some more time on the floor, he's going to be able to help us."

Martin has been patient while waiting his turn to play, but he's not always willing to let the game come to him.

"I'm aggressive in practice," he said. "You can ask anybody. I look for my shot. But this is all part of the learning curve. I'm trying to move to the next level, though, and leave that learning curve behind. I know I'll always be learning, but I know coach has confidence in me, and he's told me to be ready.

"After Bobby got hurt, coach told me that again, and I've been doing a lot of work after practice."

Martin said he was motivated Friday night at halftime, when he heard captain Chris Webber heatedly implore his team to be aggressive.

"He did have the fire going," Martin said. "I always need that fire because I'm kind of laid-back, and he just said we can't let teams push us around. I know he got me juiced up, and by the way the team came out and played in the third quarter, I think everybody else took it positively."

Happy New Year - The Kings sat on their plane at the Salt Lake City International Airport on New Year's Eve as mechanical problems were fixed. The team arrived in Sacramento at about 11:15 p.m. and at the practice facility at Arco Arena, where their cars were, about 11:40 p.m.

There's something about Kevin Martin's game I really like. It's hard to put my finger on it, because I haven't really seen him enough, but I like a lot of what I've seen so far.

His ability as a defender was certainly underrated coming out of college. Unless all of our other guys are just THAT bad defensively. :P

Anyway, the guy seems to just have a lot of talent AND a good head on his shoulders. I guess I'll have to wait to see more besides preseason and one game before I can make a better assessment but, I've really liked what I've seen so far.

Whens the next time the Kings are on national tv? Id like to actually see Martin in action.
You're not alone there! Unfortunately, unless you have CSN or NBALP, you might have to wait for Cleveland to come to sac on Jan 20th (on TNT). Unless you live here in the Sacramento area where you can pick the Clippers game on the 15th on CH 10.

He has a love of basketball that shines through, even when he's just practicing before the game, sitting on the bench, etc. I think that's part of the charm - it's clear he's doing something he really truly loves and that's always fun to watch.

One thing about the Kings is we know they won't put too much pressure on him to have to progress too rapidly. I see good things for Special K - and the KINGS.

:D

I think the more PT Kevin gets, the more comfortable he gets being a scorer... Alot of rookies are scared cuz they think they don't want to be scoring because they worry that they may get taken out if they miss a shot, or that they are taking shots away from the big guns (webber peja miller bibby doug)... Now that Bobby is out, and hopefully he gets more PT, he can come in and provide instant offense, instant energy. He seems like that kinda guy...

Amongst the congrats and all, things may have gotten a little over-hyped. It was encouraging becuase he looked much more comfortable out there than he's been, but it was still just one game, and still just 6pts in 19min. A nice bench performance, but hardly "he's the next star in the league" stuff. We'll have to see where it goes from here -- he's still in direct competition with Mo Evans and to a lesser degree Matt Barnes for PT. May be hard for him to establish consistent minutes even if he starts playing well just because there are other young guys who've shown potential sitting right there in the same position. Barnes is more of a SF, but Evans is 6'5" -- a real competitor at OG and neither guy has PG skills. (I think Kevin may have the best chance of the kids at giving us big scoring numbers on a nightly basis so he might have a leg up on replacing that aspect of Bobby's game).

An interesting question for the future -- Doug appears to be nearing the end now. We have two young guys on the roster who are heirs apparent until/unless we bring in somebody new. Both have shown the potential to be good defenders, although neither is in Doug's class yet (few are/have been). But neither guy is a passer at ALL. Have not shown passing in the pros (Kevin has all of ONE assist all season (in 55min) and got 7 all of preseason (in 8 games of 20+min); Mo has managed to get all of 8 all season (in 176min) and 9 all of preseason). Both got few assists in college (neither guy ever averaged 2 asts a game). If one of those guys eventually becomes "the man" at OG for us, our passing attack as we've known it goes right in the toilet. Be much more like the old Tariq/Nick years than what we've become accustomed to during our run as an elite squad with Doug at the 2.

If we fail this season, swing into rebuilding mold, let Rick go and likely Petey Carril with him, who knows what the new system will look like and maybe one of those guys will be a perfect fit. But right now, we're talking about a major change for us with one of 3 PG/creators (Doug/Mike/Chris) being replaced by a finisher much more likely to average 1 to 2 assists than 4 to 5.

There you go - the voice of reason again. ;)

I'm still going to enjoy being enthusiastic about Kevin AND Mo Evans, because it's fun to see new guys coming off the bench and doing fun stuff.

:D

stop it... it may be a bubble, but I can play in it whenever I wanna.

Geez Brick. No one said he was Michael Jordan:p

That being said, valid point about his assist numbers. However, the kid is 21 and may never have played in a system where he was ASKED to be a big assist guy, he was the scorer. He's got a good feel for the game, so there is no reason at all those numbers wouldn't go up. He was a big fish in a teeny-tiny pond, such a small pond that many of the scouts over-looked him because they didn't see him play against the guys from some of the bigger schools. If he had played for a larger school, there is no way he would have been available when we picked, at least that appears to be the concensus amongst the pre-draft scouting reports.
I am telling you again, this kid will surprise you;)

Kingsgurl pretty much hit that nail on the head. In high school and college, Kevin was the big scorer....the guy everyone else passed the ball to for the shot.

Listen to his teamates not the media

Whose the guy who just thinks he is the leader and can't motivate his teamates again???

The kid wasn't half bad. That pass between Barry's legs was sweet! He was very impressive last night. Hope the kid keeps it up!:D

I think this is a good point, but one of the things that people have always pointed out about DC is his inability to keep defenses honest, allowing defenders to sag off of him and destroy spacing on the floor. I think Martin gives the Kings the best shot of the three young guys of spreading the floor a bit better since defenders probably will learn to respect his offensive abilities a bit more than DC's. The passing will hopefully come in time with working in the offense.

Plus, at this point, the Kings are looking for these guys to replace BJax, who I'd venture to say (without looking at the stats) is a guy that the Kings don't rely upon too heavily for high assist numbers.
