Roethlisberger "serious but stable" after motorcycle crash

PITTSBURGH -- Steelers star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship, was badly hurt in a motorcycle crash Monday and was undergoing surgery.

The extent of his injuries was not known, although the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that police said Roethlisberger lost most of his teeth, fractured his left sinus cavity bone, suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head and a broken jaw, and severely injured both of his knees.

Roethlisberger was in serious but stable condition, said Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma at Mercy Hospital...

What a dumb arse. Big ben will be lucky if he plays in the NFL again. Suicide Cycles. Why dont these guys wait till their sports career is over. See Jayson Williams and Kellen Winslow.

I liked Big Ben when he came into the league (not a Steelers fan tho) and hope he will be ok, but I have to agree with GK. I've heard him in interviews talk about riding motorcycles and how he would not give it up, I like motorcycles too but he should at least consider wearing a helmet. Its a pretty dumb move as a pro athlete though, even if he is a great rider you're always at risk of a car plowing into you while stopped.

I don't feel sorry for the Ste"a"ler fans because a lot of them are saying they wish it was Carson Palmer ont he bike, and were laughing when they took Palmer out of the playoff game. Screw Ste"a"ler fans.

I do feel sorry for Ben though.

This is sort of shocking as I've not seen anything like this, though I went to a few Steelers boards when the news broke and saw mostly fans from different teams (save a few jerks) wishing Ben well.

There are one or two rumors his knees may be hurt, but most reports limit the injuries to facial lacerations, a broken jaw and some missing teeth. I just can't understand the need to not wear a helmet some people have.

This is just pure stupidity IMHO.

My heart goes out to Steeler fans, regardless of the idiotic comments a few of them might make.

I hope Ben recovers.

He could of saved breaking his jaw and nose if he would wear a helmet...if you saw the windshield you see wear his face planted >.< not good...hope he gets better soon, he was in surgery today and they called in a plastic surgen, his knee's were injured after falling to the ground...

Big Ben has been my favorite player outside of the 49ers since he came into the league.

I have my fingers crossed that he fully recovers and returns back to his normal self...

I wonder if this will now make him wear a helmet, or will his stupidity in not wearing one still reign? Just a general question regarding all pro-sports leagues-is it possible for players to be required to sign a code of conduct about these issues? Such as a 'thou shall always wear a helmet when cycling', or a ban on engaging in dangerous activities? With players being worth so much money, it wouldn't suprise me if any league had ever tried that. However, the unions would cry foul big-time, I bet.

Actually players can have their contracts voided for motorcycle accidents. There are usually dangerous activities clauses in them. Remember Jeff Kent with the Giants claiming he fell off a ladder while washing his truck? I also think the Bulls bought out Jay Williams's contract but there was discussion at the time of them voiding it entirely.

In football it doesn't matter, they don't have guaranteed contracts like the NBA and players are routinely cut long before they expire.

Bengal/Steeler hatred goes back a long time. That's all I will say. Some people can't or will not ever understand that. So the hell with their fans.

As for Ben I do feel sorry for him, but I still am quite miffed that after everyone told him to wear a helmet he still chose not to and paid the price. Even after the Kellen Winslow injury, when everyone told him "see what can happen!"

Whatever.

Sorry, but I'd feel sorry for Laker fans if something like this happened to one of their players. Anybody who would wish this kind of thing on another human being is just an idiot. If a few Steeler fans are wishing this had happened to Palmer - or anyone else for that matter - I would guess their aggregate IQ is about equal to my coffee table.

This isn't just some game, dude. This guy could end up never being able to play football again. And no fan wants to see that happen, regardless of what team they might root for IMHO.

Yeah, he paid the price...and that price might be the end of his career. Yeah, it was a pretty dumb thing to do. I think we ALL know people who have done pretty dumb things and been lucky enough to get away with them. Roethlisberger's luck may have run out.

I figured Ben for the Harley type but apparently he was on a crotch-rocket (Hayabusa)... which just seems all the more stupid for the helmetless riding considering the differences in riding positions and the speeds that most people ride on those bikes.

I don't care if its Big Ben or Kyle Boller, if you ride a motorcycle without a helmet then you are a dumba$$. He's lucky he's not dead.

ESPN just showed Drew Bledsoe riding a bike with his little son on his lap or on his side near the handlebars, both were helmetless. He should be in jail. Disgusting.

I have a strong feeling this accident may bring about some significant changes in how teams look at the off-season hobbies, activities, etc. of their $$$$$$ players.

Yeah...they'll just make it forbidden by contract so they don't lose their cash when an accident happens.

The clause will look something like this: If you accidently f*** yourself up, then we don't have to pay you.

Actually I think all standard NFL contracts have a clause that says basically "if you get injured in anything besides football, NO MONEY FOR YOU"

I really hate to see anybody get hurt like this... good thing is all reports say that he's going to be okay after a few months of recovery.. ..but cmon, how much of an idiot can you be? When I first read news of this I couldn't help shouting IDIOT after reading he wasn't even wearing a helmet. ..and reports now are coming up that he didnt even have a motorcycle license...

ugh.. well if anything positive comes out of this i'm sure this will be a wakeup call to lots of people

Broken jaw and nasal cavity, that's fixable. The big problem is that he was reported with injuries to both knees. Those injuries are undisclosed. At least I haven't heard anything about ligaments or if he busted a knee cap etc. That could be a HUGE deal. A young guy like that possibly losing mobility is horrible.

Well this is hardly the first one, and many a professional team in various sports (baseball, NBA etc.) have clauses specificially relating to motorcycles. If the Steelers did not, maybe its just because of the non-guaranteed nature of NFL contracts in general?

I'm now reading that he is almost certain to play next year.

Before this story I actually did not know that it was legal to ride without a helmet, but apparently it is legal in MOST states. Wow...that is RIDICULOUS if you ask me...so you have to wear a seatbelt but you don't have to wear a helmet? And who pays for the months spent in the ICU by idiot motorcyclists who don't wear helmets and become vegetables? And who pays higher insurance premiums because of it? Certainly not the irresponsible drivers themselves, but everyone else!

Now its come out that Ben doesn't have a motorcyclist's license. Unbelievable.

Who wants to bet Big Ben says a helmet wouldn't have helped since his major injuries occured as a result of a face plant? At least he won't have to make up fake injuries every week like last year so that he can seem tougher.

Ben released a statement saying IF he ever rides again it will definitely be with a helmet. He also seems pretty confident he'll be ready to play the whole season.

Now that NBC has football again I can imagine all the olympics-style personal stories they do every time they get a Steelers game. uggh.
