Rock Band II Draft - playoffs begin 6/8/09

She's also great on piano too if you wanted to add that...
I thought about that, but for this concert, I do not want her behind a piano. She will be front and center with only a mike. Besides, the keyboard duties will be more than taken care of by my next pick (crosses fingers).

Charlie Watts - Drums (Rolling Stones)

Last draft I had the guy with pretty much the most famous drum solo in rock (Moby Dick)... and for this one I will swing all the way to the opposite end of the spectrum and have the most understated, steady, and professional guy to step behind the kit for a hard rocking act. Don't think he has ever recorded an extended solo... but we don't need a showoff drummer in this band.

My Pick:
Chris Novoselic - Nirvana (Bass)

I'm not really surprised he is still here, but hey. I need a dirty, grimy bass player to compliment the rest of my band, and I think the rest of you can kind of see where I am going here. Chris is able to compliment my style but can also play at a quicker pace if the band decides to go that way.

I would love to listen to my band at this point. Just grooving,

I totally agree :D
I don't even care about winning at this point, I'm just drooling over the idea of listening to this band, provided my singer makes it back to me.

Thanks for the help Jespher! I really appreciate it. And I agree. I love my band this year so much more than I did last year.

Just wanted to add this solo, as it's one of my faves of Hammett's

I've sent several PMs to tradepeja and he's been on the board several times since the last pick was made. Since he insists on frequently timing out in many of our previous drafts I'm going to move this thing along, and he can catch up later...

LPKingsFan Pmed me his picks because he is away for the holiday. He needs a drummer and was going to add this gentleman to his band. With his 4th choice, LPKingsFan selects:

Chad Smith - Drums/Percussion
(The Red Hot Chili Peppers)

So I have a guitar heavy band, in need of some awesome percussion backing. I had a couple directions that I could take this pick, but I'm sticking to my classic rock instincts. This guy is ranked #5 on Rolling Stone's top 100 drummers of all time. His rhythmic precision, and classic beats fueled the groundbreaking blues rock band Cream in the 60s, elevating Eric Clapton to the guitar godlike status he wields today.

With my 4th choice, I select:

Ginger Baker - Drums/Percussion (Cream)

So one member left, and I already have the pieces for an awesome and complete band. Cream rocked with only 3 members, the Beatles did it with 4, and now I get to add one more:). I'm sticking with a guitar heavy band, and adding this next member for his technical skill, blues/rock styles, excellent cover library, and his adaptive abilities. He will meld well with George at lead guitar, as a secondary lead player either on acoustic or electric guitar, and can backup on vocals as well. With my 5th choice, I select:

John Mayer - 2nd Lead Guitar/Vocals

I haven't been on perse....yes my window has been open on Kingsfans, but I've had no time to post, nor have I posted, till now. Anyway, I guess I have 2 picks now.

Thomas Erak - Lead Guitar/back-up vocals (from the Fall of Troy)

This guy recorded his first album when he was 16. Its his band the Fall of Troy's self-titled 2003 album. Its fantastic. If any of you have heard it, its amazing that he and his bandmates did it at such a young age. His skill on the guitar is cutting edge and his vocals....well, think Adam Lambert but less repetitive. Actually, the more I think about it, his voice is very close to Lambert's.

He'll add the experimental guitar work I need to fully flesh out the band. As for a bass player, I would have loved to have Claypool...but thats out of the question. You can skip my next pick for now, I'll have to really think about it.

Alright, I've made up my mind on the bass player. He will stand as a counter-point to Erak, funky, smooth, and soft. I think he fits my band's idea perfectly.

[yt=Larry Graham]_pbhxB7cGbwh[/yt]

Larry Graham - Bass/back-up vocals (from Sly & the Family Stone)

Just watch that video. Man is he a sick player. And he's always like that. Plus, his voice, while maybe used sparingly, will fit in perfectly when I need that soulful flare that Patton and Erak can't provide.

Rounding out my band
My Pick:
Hayley Williams - Paramore (Lead Vocals)

1. She is good looking.
2. Her voice is PHENOMENAL. Kind of a new wave Joan Jett.
3. Cmon, Williams, Bellamy, and Kiedis? If you wouldn't want to see what that trio sounded like together, then something is horribly horribly wrong.
4. She is good looking.
5. Great stage presence, along with Kiedis, Bellamy, and Wackerman. They would be awesome and energetic live.

Ideally I wanted Malcolm for my rhythm guitarist, along with another person who is already in a band with another of my members. With Kirk playing lead, I really just need someone to hold down a steady rhythm while rockin it (and lookin hot ;)), and my next pick does that, with some of the most famous riffs ever. Making it the 2nd female in a row, I'm taking:

Nancy Wilson - Rhythm Guitar/Backup Vocals (Heart)

MORE PICS PLEASE!!!!

Francisco likes!

Neil Young - Guitar, Vocal (Buffalo Springfield, Crazy Horse, CSNY)

The Godfather of Grunge. Up till now in both drafts I have tried to take only legends who need no introduction. But I have also tried to take guys who I thought would truly gel and synergize if thrown together on a stage or studio.

Of all the guys I've picked in either draft, Neil Young is the most exciting to me -the guy I would most like to have come over for a weekend and jam. I'm proud to finish off Micawber V2 with this true genius and legend.

I select Paul Simonon - Bass from The Clash.

He held down the sound... an amazing bass player, but like the rest of the Clash, he always claimed he could not play very well (LIAR!). But he has the sound, the brains, the style and the look for my group. Rock on!

And one for the ladies

Rick Wakeman - Synthesizers, Keyboards and Piano

Close to the Edge is by far my fav Yes Album. Rick is more than qualified for what he will doing in this band.

wiki
Richard Christopher Wakeman (born 18 May 1949 in Perivale, London) is an English keyboard player, composer, and songwriter known as the keyboardist for progressive rock group Yes. Originally a classically trained pianist, he was a pioneer in the use of electronic keyboards and in the use of a rock band in combination with orchestra and choir. .... He is often considered to be one of the best rock keyboardists of all time.

Aside from Yes, he has played with:
Alice Cooper
John Williams
Brotherhood of Man
Elton John
Lou Reed
David Bowie
Cat Stevens
Elkie Brooks
T. Rex
Ozzy Osbourne
Black Sabbath
Brian May
Vivian Stanshall
Denny Laine
Jared Jackson

He will definately NOT be having this haircut.

Only 3 picks left, and then it's write-up time! Great work everyone. Now, no fair stealing my band name:p.

The write-ups will follow the order of the 2nd round. See last year's draft for reference, as everyone had a lot of fun with it. If you don't have time to get into that much detail during your 18 hour pick window, then at least call dibs to your band's name and you can come back and post the write-up later. Rock On!

Topper Headon - Drums

http://music.lovetoknow.com/Topper_Headon

"Topper Headon is the Human Drum Machine, the man behind the kit for most of the Clash’s recordings. Without him, it is hard to imagine the Clash would have been as influential as they were. Joe Strummer said “We would have been absolutely lost if it wasn’t for Topper Headon”. He brought in soul and jazz influences, along with impeccable timing and songwriting skills.

During the recording of “Give ‘Em Enough Rope”, Sandy Pearlman gave Headon the nickname “The Human Drum Machine”, because he never made mistakes. In many gig reviews, the phrase “Headon’s drumming carried them through”, or something like it, will appear. The Clash recorded an amazing first album with Terry Chimes, but without Headon, the band would have been lost. Headon’s drumming continued onto London Calling, where he was more than a match for the numerous genres the Clash took on. Soul, jazz, reggae, ska, none of it was a problem for him. On Sandinista!, it was more of the same, only with more styles of music."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topper_Headon

'As a drummer, Headon often employed a distinctive style which emphasized a simple bass-snare up-down beat, accentuated with closed hi-hat flourishes. Such a method can be found in the songs "Clampdown", "Train in Vain", and "Lost in the Supermarket". His drumming on "Train in Vain" has been characterized as one of the most important and distinctive beats in rock music. Writes Scott Kenemore, "his contribution to the music was tremendous, and his drumming remains an undiscovered treasure for too many."'

http://www.total-drums.com/best-rock-drummers-2.html

"With his background in jazz and soul music, Topper brought many new dimensions to The Clash's punk sound. Reggae, rockabilly, funk and more can be heard in their songs, and Topper played them all with power and grace."

Topper's drumming is so key throughout the Clash's entire catalog that I could post up any of their songs, but these are a couple that come to mind where the drums are particularly prominent.

One of my favorite drum fills is the staggery one here in "I Fought the Law" at 1:22:
