The Kings pick up coach's option for 2005-06 season

Rick Adelman has taken the Kings to the playoffs every season he has been coach.
Kings coach Rick Adelman said he didn't find out about it until he was driving to Arco Arena on Tuesday afternoon.
But the decision to exercise the option on the final year of Adelman's contract had been discussed by owners Gavin and Joe Maloof and team president Geoff Petrie for several weeks.
Adelman, who is receiving $2.7 million this season, will get $3 million next season. But more importantly, he has the security of knowing where he will be.
Despite leading the Kings to at least 55 victories in each of the past four seasons and a 30-14 mark this season, Adelman's future had been uncertain.
Adelman was told during an impromptu press conference before the game that he had been referred to as a lame duck during a Kings telecast Sunday.
"Well, it was the status," Adelman said of the reference. "You had a year to go. I mean half a year to go. I had pretty much come to grips with the fact if nothing happened here, then we'll see what happens after that.
"I wasn't worried, but obviously I'm relieved and thankful this has been worked out and we can move on through the rest of this year now and into next year."
In his seventh season with the Kings, Adelman has a 331-173 record.
Joe Maloof said Petrie strongly recommended exercising the option.
"Geoff told us it would be the best thing for the team to get it taken care of rather than have uncertainty going into the playoffs," Joe Maloof said.
Adelman had campaigned for the move before the season began, but the request fell on deaf ears. The coach knew he had Petrie's support, but that wasn't enough.
Losing the season's first three games in Texas didn't do much for Adelman's status. But the Kings have won 30 of their past 40 games and are just one game behind last season's pace.
"Geoff and I have talked a couple of times about the situation, and I felt I had his support," Adelman said. "But we both knew it was really in the Maloofs' hands.
"They are the ones who had to make the decision. I don't think there is anything Geoff could do anymore, and there wasn't anything I could do. It was up to them. Did they feel like I deserved to come back again or not? I'm thankful they did decide that."
During Adelman's tenure in Sacramento, only the San Antonio Spurs (.710) and Los Angeles Lakers (.679) have a better winning percentage than the Kings (.658).
"Sometimes I think Rick doesn't get the recognition he deserves for the job he has done here in Sacramento," Petrie said in a statement.
In addition to the Kings, Adelman has coached the Portland Trail Blazers and Golden State Warriors, racking up a 688-425 record. His victory total ranks 16th in NBA history and fourth among active coaches behind Don Nelson, Larry Brown and Jerry Sloan. [BYWIRE]
