PALMETTO BAY, Fla. (AP) -- Washington Redskins star safety Sean Taylor was in critical condition Monday after surgery for a gunshot wound to his leg during what police are investigating as a possible armed robbery at his home.
The 24-year-old player was in the intensive care unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital after several hours of surgery, said family friend Richard Sharpstein, his former lawyer. Taylor lost a "significant" amount of blood because the bullet damaged his femoral artery, Sharpstein said.
Doctors are worried the blood loss might affect blood flow to the brain, said Sharpstein, who was at the hospital with Taylor's family and friends. Taylor has had several on- and off-the-field problems -- two years ago he was accused of brandishing a gun.
Officers were sent to Taylor's home at about 1:45 a.m. after his girlfriend called 911 and said he was shot in his lower body, Lt. Nancy Perez said. Taylor had missed the last two games because of a knee injury and was at home recuperating. Taylor was airlifted to the hospital.

A bit from the article:

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor has died a day after he was shot and wounded in his Miami home, Taylor's former attorney Richard Sharpstein said Tuesday.

Sean Taylor never regained consciousness after being taken to a hospital, says his ex-attorney.

Sharpstein told CNN that the 24-year-old football player was shot Monday during a home invasion and died later at a hospital.
"The blood loss was too much. He didn't make it," Sharpstein told CNN. "He did supposedly squeeze a nurse's hand. I wasn't there," said Sharpstein. "But obviously that was either some kind of response or muscle reaction and not any sign for the better."
He never regained consciousness after the shooting, Sharpstein said. "It's a senseless, tragic death that was so unnecessary, another example of the incessant violence in -- not only our community -- but the country now."

I heard about this on the radio this morning and I was absolutely stunned. My condolences go out to his friends and family.

Outside of the the 49ers, there were 2 players in the NFL that I made a point out of watching highlights and looking at numbers.

One is Ray Lewis.

The other was Sean Taylor...The guy was a beast!

RIP Sean, and thoughts go out to your fiancee and baby girl. Also to your Washington mates.

So sad...

:(

Senseless and tragic. My prayers for all those trying to deal with this.

RIP Sean Taylor

I went to bed seemingly with news that he might be showing signs of getting "better" (in whatever sense they had of that last night) and woke up with the news that he had passed away.

Very senseless, and very sad...

My condolences :(

Sure RIP, and a real tragedy. But Sean Taylor was about as much a saint as Pacman Jones in cultivating yet another NFL thug image - sadly. Taylor 's NFL baggage revealed here as the facts of his murder still under investigation.

I don't much care about a thug image. We are talking about a home invasion...violating a person's sanctuary. It is frightening when one is not safe in their own home. What a shame. RIP, Mr. Taylor.

Did you read the article and even more recent press reports? It says that investigators have not ruled out that it was a random home invasion - but might have been deadly payback for Sean's past. After all, he pulled his gun out and fired rounds at what he said were car thieves barely avoiding a felony conviction and jail sentence in Dade County, Florida two years ago. He made statements in the past about constantly being around thugs, guns and danger. His home was broken into just a little over a week before his slaying and the culprits left a knife on a bed - warning sign?

The man is dead, PurpleHaze. He was murdered in his own home. Sorry, but I think you're way out of line with this.

From what Ive heard from Skins fans the guy had 100% completely
turned himself around for the sake of his daughter.

And that daughter had her dad taken away from her because of this.

:(

I dunno what else to say on this...

Sorry but he had turned himself around and I think you are poisoned by what you heard from the media, they paint pictures of certain players all the time. Yeah he had a rough couple of years but he had really turned himself around and I don't see how it could be pay back for his past really. The bottom line is the guy is dead now. The last thing people should do is diss him by comparing him to pacman jones and speculating about how it's his fault he's dead.

RIP, he was a great person and he had his whole life ahead of him. Poor guy didn't even get to see his kid grow up. This is terrible.

Sorry but he had turned himself around

And you know this because?????

I'll hold off judging either way until after all the facts come out. At this juncture I just feel for his family and especially his 18 month old daughter. What a senseless, senseless loss....

Let's be clear. I said, "RIP AND A REAL TRAGEDY." I simply pointed out that Sean Taylor had a very checkered past and whether or not he had straightened himself out was not the issue. The point is I was not buying all of the initial media reports that said his murder appeared to be TOTALLY RANDOM. The link I gave in that post said exactly the same thing which was the first one I saw that didn't jump on the bandwagon saying Taylor had reformed himself and it was just some random break-in.

Sean Taylor's best friend who has known him since both were 6 years old and also an NFL player (Antrel Rolle, Arizona Cardinals) says it was not random, not robbery - but in affect a hit.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22012741/

I think the point is that while it wasn't a random attack, Taylor HAD in fact reformed but his past caught up with him. And that's what most of the interviews I've seen - including the one from his lawyer - have said.

Regardless, it's just another senseless result of too much violence in our society. I don't think the shooter meant to kill him; if he was shot in the leg, it might have been more of a message or something. The fact the bullet severed the femoral artery was most likely accidental.

It's still tragic, however, and I feel very sorry for all of the people trying to make sense of it.

How about you just express it that way and stop arguing with people who are expressing the same level of sadness over the senselessness of it and the fact that a young child is now fatherless?

I mean damn. Who the hell cares if it was a hit or what the flipping media says, is he going to be any less dead or does this child deserve to be any more fatherless? Hit or no, checkered past or no, it's senseless.

We arm chair prognosticators are no closer to the situation than anybody else, so geezus, let it go until more information comes out and open another damn thread to express how much he caused his own death. I mean, seriously...geezus....

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Three people have been detained in connection with the shooting death of NFL player Sean Taylor, according to a source close to the investigation.

Miami-Dade Police were tight-lipped about the reported detentions, however, saying only that there was an ongoing operation in Fort Myers, Florida, about 118 miles from Miami, and that it might be connected to the case.

To honor Sean Taylor, the Redskins only sent out 10 players on defense to start the game leaving his safety position open.

Sadly the Bills just kicked a go-aheader with only 4 seconds left so the Skins couldn't pull one out.
