2 vets sitting every game from here on out according to Joerger tonight......this is actually earlier than I thought would happen.

You have to wonder if that means we will see Giles here soon. I think the team needs to update us on what the status of his return is before the end of January. Can't just say it will be reevaluated in January then sweep it under the rug. Look for an official statement before the end of the month in all likelihood and I would not be surprised if they hold him out, but would be great to see what we've got with him and the other guys before heading into the summer where decisions will have to be made

Looks like Memphis is gonna close out the Lakers and add a game lead on us and there we are, tightly seated in the third worst record in the NBA. As long as we are picking top 5 I think we can really make some noise in the draft this year. Whether that be by way of draft or packaging an asset with the pick to either move up or pick up some talent from a team that really likes Young or maybe Bamba. All the while, we are racking up lins and our young talent is showing flashes. What more can we ask?

Regarding the timing, at this point, the Kings are going to shop their vets so hard that their names are going to be in twitter and hoopshype.com all the time. They might try to put George Hill on eBay to avoid the toxic asset that's coming back within a month in a trade (fret not folks, I'm sure that player will be great for "the culture.")

Instead of players reading all that and having any confusion as to what is going on. Or having the player flag the tank news for the fans, you say what's up and then the vets know the score when you are in fact trying to trade them every day.

I'm interested to see how they achieve the stated plan under the league's new rest rules. Like Carter I get, objectively most of the player are better than Carter most nights. Hill is pretty trash. Despite the Kings starting him a lot, a lot of teams wouldn't play Temple. But, under the new league rules, you can't just not dress Z-Bo on a lot of road dates can you? Perhaps you can dress him and not play him with DNP-CD ... which I'm sure he'll love. Especially on the road. I mean, nobody is actually coming out to see Z-Bo and no road fans are going to complain to the NBA. This isn't Lebron skipping a city or prime time. But, this is pretty much the letter of the law and the intent of the new rest rules ... and they admitted it out loud. You can't just rest your leading scorer and rebounder frequently because you decided to start tanking, right?

They can still rest Z-Bo a ton, especially at home. So, I wouldn't expect to see him much at Golden One, which should further impact their ability to raise the win total.

And if Z-Bo is active, I'm hard pressed to believe that coach is prepared to cut down his minutes a ton and not give the ball to his best player. That's why, until this year, they used to just sit the players.

Can’t get too excited as our schedule eases up a bit after this stretch.. The FO is going to have to do its job and move who is adding to wins that isn’t in our long term plans as well, and I’ve yet to see that route

This is a point I've been reiterating for a while now. Will Fox show enough to be a franchise player? If he does, you build around him with the 2018 draft pick. Is WCS going to be consistent enough to be our franchise C? Can Skal do more than just flash potential every 3 games as a future PF?

I think here's the only positions we'd be most confident with moving ahead:

PG: Fox
SG: Bogdan/Buddy
SF:
PF:
C: WCS

Now, what we need is for someone on this roster to breakout and look like a franchise player. No one has had a game that made me stop and say, "he's going to be THE guy". It's going to be a tough challenge to put on them..but I'm really happy we'll give Fox the opportunity to try it out freely. Give him the keys and see what happens.

Thanks for sharing that link, Joerger seemed very candid. I think like Temple mentioned in the link that it's nice to know this sort of thing and be transparent about it.

Going to the young guys so early probably hammers home the point that, although Temple and Koufos are pro's pros, they most likely opt out after the year in an afford to hook up with teams that are striving for the playoffs. Very important they opt out.

I think if we’re looking to get him back to see what we’ve got before the offseason, because we have plans to draft someone at his position or have a certain free agent in mind then it makes sense (given the logjam of big men we’ve got). I’ve seen some say you draft BPA and worry about fit down the line and I understand the theory of it all but when put together it could get messy. Someone has also alluded to if you draft someone like Young and you’ve got Fox and one of the two has got to go then you will never get true value for either. I believe the same comes into play for Skal, Giles, WCS, and the draft pick (Bagley, Ayton, etc.) I would love to be wrong and have them all form some type of super rotation and be able to play together but realistically somebody is going to get shafted whether it be at guard or big man after the draft if all the young guys remain. And we haven’t even mentioned Papa, oy vey.

Been thinking the same thing. As far as THE guy who's also the leader, I think it's either Bogey or Fox.

If his knees aren't ready, I agree. But the kid hasn't played a competitive game in 10 months and even then it was very limited minutes.

If his knees & overall strength is good, then it would make sense to me that he'd play some in March & April just to get his feet wet and gain some NBA experience (and confidence) before the offseason.

Slow day at work so here's a random take I've noticed with the Kings...

They don't have the ability to win match ups on the floor. Especially in mismatches. It's extra noticeable this year because Joerger has a bunch of guys playing out of position.

For example, Koufos is one of the best defenders on the team. Montrezl Harrell is smaller but still strong and a bit quicker than Koufos and really took it to him the other night against the Clips. The problem with the Kings is that most of our guys aren't good enough to win their offensive match ups. Ideally if you have a physical mismatch and Harrell has the advantage on one end of the court, you'd want Koufos to now have the advantage at the other end of the court due to the mismatch. But Koufos isn't the type that can exploit any match up so the advantage goes to the Clippers because we can't get back what we give up.

Mitchell vs. Hield - same issue. Mitchell can get around Hield with ease but Hield can't really do much with Mitchell because he has no advantage over him other than just his shooting stroke.

Temple vs. real SFs - mismatch here because Temple is much smaller than a lot of these guys but he can't make up for it with quickness on the offensive end so the advantage almost always goes to the opposing team.

Skal vs. everyone - Skal isn't quick enough to guard stretch 4s and he's not strong enough to guard real big men. On the flip side, stretch 4s are strong enough to guard him and big men are able to guard him as well because he doesn't have a quick first step.

The Kings are always being exploited on mismatches but don't have the talent and skill to exploit teams on the other end of the court. Hopefully in time they can start playing guys in positions where they have the advantage. Bogie at SG would give him an advantage on many of the other players in the league. Guys like Mitchell would still be too fast for him but he would be able to check the majority of SGs on defense and then use his size and length to get an advantage on them when running the offense.

I probably won't argue the former, since I haven't been compelled to subscribe to league pass. I think the latter is inconclusive. My philosophy on learning to play the team game before the individual game has been expressed repeatedly, so I'll leave it at that. Fox will have his time to shine. I think growing within the system Joerger wants is good for rounding out his game as he adjusts to the rigors of NBA life and builds out his body.

I think that's fair. Until Fox, Skal, possibly Giles and a future #1 can continually win offensive matchups the team will struggle. Bogs will win on many matchups, but not all. Hield just can't create against the more athletic 2s in the league; he needs others to get him open or move without the ball for the most part. I would be very surprised if Divac doesn't get some Harrell types to blend in with this team for next year.

In other words, with Temple and Koufos with player options, can they reach an agreement with the Kings before the trade deadline to say they will opt out freeing us to waive them so they can go to a playoff team?

Preference is to just trade them but assuming nothing comes of that, was looking for a way to open up a roster spot or 2 and get guys on 10 day contracts when that begins......basically getting looks at G League guys.

Yes, that is legal. Teams and players can mutually agree to eliminate an option year - technically they wouldn't be opting out early, they'd just be modifying the contract. And that could definitely be done within the scope of a buyout.

Interesting.....that could help in deals where a player has a player option.......that makes a deal with Cleveland even more feasible.....potentially. Hill for expiring plus a guy with player option who cuts deal with Sac plus the pick and maybe one of their few young guys.
