The RealGM.com Team Rankings For The Week Of August 15th

1.)San Antonio Spurs
They re-signed Robert "big shot" Horry and brought over a promising foreign center in Fabricio Oberto. No key pieces have been lost, so expect them to make another run for the championship next season.

2.)Miami Heat
Miami is officially re-loaded. Trading Eddie Jones and spare parts for Jason Williams, James Posey, and Antoine Walker is a real steal for Pat Riley. Some say the chemistry will be damaged and Williams/Walker won’t fit into the team concept. Those are valid concerns, but you can’t question the return on value. Dealing one starter and getting back three is amazing. In addition, they locked up Shaq for the next five years at a hefty cost of one hundred million dollars. Though, it could have cost them a lot more. Unless the injury bug bites, this team should be the best in the East.

3.) Detroit Pistons
This is another team that hasn’t made many changes in player personnel. They lost Larry Brown but hired a great replacement in Flip Saunders. What Larry did with this team was amazing and Flip certainly has some big shoes to fill.

4.) Dallas Mavericks
They signed Doug Christie, who should help them on the defensive end. The roster is stacked with talent and is a lock to win fifty or more games

5.) Houston Rockets
Signing Stromile Swift was a fantastic move by the Rockets. His athleticism and shot blocking abilities are exactly what they needed at the power forward position. They’ve re-signed Jon Barry and are close to re-upping Dikembe Mutombo. Both are key components to their second unit. Though, they still need a steady, pass-first point guard.

6.) Phoenix Suns
Losing Joe Johnson is going to hurt. Dealing away Quentin Richardson and the rights to Nate Robinson for Kurt Thomas could backfire big time. Though, Thomas will provide some much needed lowpost defense and signing Raja Bell will help their perimeter D. The Suns will still be competitive, but don’t expect 62-20 again.

7.) Indiana Pacers
Sarunas Jasikevicius is going to help Indiana in the shooting department, but will his big ego accept a smaller role with an NBA team? Now that Reggie Miller is gone, the franchise really needs Jermaine O’Neal to step up and become the locker room leader.

8.) Sacramento Kings
They lost Cuttino Mobley but traded for a quality replacement in Bonzi Wells. They recently went out and signed the consistent Shareef Abdur-Rahim to a bargain basement contract. Injuries could once again prove to be an issue, but on paper, Sacto is looking pretty good.

9.) Denver Nuggets
They’ve stayed relatively quiet this offseason. Drafting Julius Hodge will help them immensely in the backcourt. If they can sign Michael Finley (if he’s waived) then Denver will be very competitive

10.).New Jersey Nets
The Nets passed on Shareef, but acquired a solid big man in Marc Jackson via trade. In order for Jersey to be a serious threat in the East, Kidd and RJ have to stay healthy.

11.) Chicago Bulls
It looks like they’ll wind up keeping both Eddy Curry and Tyson Chandler (at least through next season). Paxson has been playing hardball with both and it seems to be working. This team should be even better next year as their young talent continues to mature.

12.) Philadelphia 76ers
Billy King was true to his word. He re-signed all of his key free agents—Dalembert, Green, and Korver. They dealt away Marc Jackson but replaced him with the younger Steven Hunter. If Chris Webber can stay healthy, then Philly should be back in the playoff picture.

13.) Los Angeles Lakers
Re-hiring Phil Jackson will definitely get them back into playoff contention. The Kwame trade was surprising and very risky. He could bust out and become a new Jermaine O’Neal. Or, he could continue to wallow in mediocrity.

14.) Washington Wizards
Losing Larry Hughes will hurt, but they signed a decent replacement in Antonio Daniels. In addition, they received optimal value for Kwame Brown in Caron Butler and Chucky Atkins. I expect this team to remain a playoff threat in the East.

15.) Cleveland Cavaliers
Kudos to Danny Ferry for making such an immediate impact. He certainly didn’t drag his feet when it came to free agent signings. Landing both Larry Hughes and Donyell Marshall will give LeBron the offensive help he so desperately needed. Re-signing Ilgauskas was smart, since he’s one of the few true centers left in the game. Of course, they still need a consistent 3-point shooter.

16.) Minnesota Timerwolves
They dealt away Sam Cassell and a first round pick in exchange for Marko Jaric and Lionel Chalmers. Jaric is an intriguing player, but each season he’s played in less and less games. They’re a threat to make the playoffs, but I don’t see this team returning to serious title contention anytime soon.

I think the Kings should be higher and the Mavs at #4 is just a bunch of BS.

mavs are rated way too high and bulls are rated way too low.....

I think the Suns are rated a bit high at number six. Losing Richardson and Johnson is really gonna hurt them, though they still have Stoudamire and Nash. I think the Kings should be higher than Phoenix at this point and Indiana should also be higher. Also the Lakers should not be that high on the list, when their best move this offseason was getting Kwame Brown.

Yeah, I would definately not put the mavs at 4 and have the pacers at 7....

And for the kings, I think that's a pretty perfect placement.

this is the website that had us signing a hockey player? I really don't care what they say because all anyone ever does is dog the kings. Constantly, this is probably the only place where you will find anyone say anything good about the kings. Kings are at least #5, because we are better than rockets, indiana, and mavs at this point.

Why are the Mavs too high? They had the FOURTH best record last year and aren't going to take any significant losses. Based on the way he played last year, losing Finley isn't going to hurt them that much, especially if they can inject a little defense into their starting lineup. That may not be a dominant playoff team, but they're still talented and still dangerous.

but not better than the kings. And There is no defense in the scheme of the dallas mavericks. Losing finley effect their play greatly this season.

Another thing is, why is Cleavland not ahead of LA Lakers? Why are Lakers so good all of a suddenn? They get back a coach and get a risky player, when Cleavland gets Larry Hughes, rsigns BIG Z, adds Donyell Marshall and has someone by the name of LEBRON JAMES. :D

wow, i hate the Mav's placing, they shouldn't be in the top 10l

also, Pheonix shouldn't be either, the deals they made are horrible. He says right in the summary to "not expect 62-20 again" YET HE RATES THEIR OFFSEASON AT 6th?! Isn't the point of the offseason to get better, not worse? wtf, whoever wrote this article is very confused

Interesting quote coming from a Kings fan...

Can't agree with that. First of all, Dallas is definitely a top ten team. And, while I don't think Phx will be quite as good as last year, I think they made some moves that addressed their biggest weaknesses (novel idea...). They picked up a couple of defensive-minded big guys in Thomas and Grant. They might not have as much firepower, but they may have a bit more balance. We'll see.

Were not better then the Pacers, but were better then Rockets & Phoenix this year IMO
Rockets didnt get much better, Swift was a good pickup but we still have a much deeper team then them. And Phoenix loosing Q Rich & and Johnson just lost them alot of three pointers and perimeter defence, The Kings are a top 5 team this year, mark it down.

I think Dallas is a top 10 team, but NOT top 5. I really do not see much difference between us and Dallas right now. I think we are pretty equal. We are built much the same. No arguments with us being 8.

Isn't early to be doing rankings? Just think how much teams are going to change between now and the reg season.

This debate is exactly why I can't wait for the season to start. We'll find out who's really improved themselves once they start playing the games. Some teams may look great on paper but won't play that well together. Let's hope the Kings aren't one of those teams.

Dallas, however, is the team coming off a 58 win season in which they jumped all the way up to 8th in defense. Much further along the curve than us, although I don't think they are relly a legit contender either.

dallas was overhyped last year and you know what happen to them lol
They made it to the 2nd round of the playoffs and were one of the 4 remaining teams out West?

The Mavs were certainly better then us. They would've made mince meat out of us. And are certainly better then us now.

Hard to believe in 3 years the roles are reversed but is such in the NBA. Wasn't long ago we had a ball making fun of the Mavs "D" while now we seem to be the joke. Or atleast close to it.

Going to be a long year.

Seems funny you said this. While we have struggled with Dallas for years during the regular season, we haven't struggled with them during the POs. I'm not saying things would have been repeated but I know for a fact we matchup much better with the Mavs than we do the Sonics. The Mavs are definitely an improved team from years past (2003, eh, lucky) for a playoff run. Mince meat.......I don't know about that.

Pacers aren't better than the Kings, and by the way the Pacers are 0-6 against the Kings in the last 3 seasons.

a) The Pacers are possibly an improved version of a team that win 61 two years ago and went to the ECF against Detroit.

b) Neither game last year counted as they happened soon after the massive suspensions -- unless you are trying to argue that beating up on their scrubs is an indicator of anything. And of course there's almost nobody left on the Kings from those earlier matchups.

c) they play defense. Lots of it.

Conclusion: They are better than us until they prove they aren't, and clearly built better for a title run.
