I just finished watching the movie "Ray." Although there is already a movie thread going, I just thought it worthwhile to mention a few things about this particular movie that really struck me.
First, Jamie Foxx is absolutely amazing, riveting, spell-binding, etc. What a performance! Capturing the essence of the man, he took this performance to a level few actors ever reach.
Second, the music is unbelievable. I grew up listening to Ray Charles. "Georgia On My Mind" breaks tears to me eyes to this day still. "What'd I Say" gets me out of my chair and dancing, even in my living room alone and by myself.
Third, the context of the movie includes just enough glimpses of the civil rights movement to bring authenticity to it without making it too much a point.
Foxx plays Charles with all his wrinkles, including his heroin addiction, his womanizing, etc. It works - and it works so well I'm going to be adding this film to my limited DVD collection as soon as I possibly can. In the meantime, I'm going to watch again before I have to return it to the store tomorrow.
wow. What a film.
