I asked officials at the state Department of Toxics this week about the status of the railyards, and how long it could take to make the site clean enough for an arena. The department says the locations being considered for a potential arena are within the “Sac Station study area” and within the “Central Corridor” study area.

“Both of these areas have been cleaned to levels that could safely accommodate an arena,” a department official told me May 3.

Some small soil areas might also require additional cleanup, but this could be coordinated with the arena development, this department staffer said.

Yeah, I read some time ago that about 90% of the railyards have been cleaned and decontaminated completely and are ready for whatever is to be built.

Sounds like a riverwalk! This is going to be HUGE for downtown and oldtown Sac. I might actually move downtown because of this. Totally serious too! Within walking or biking distance would be awesome. Would always have somethign to do!

That would be awesome. Sac has a really neat downtown but this is the type of thing that's obviously missing.

Wow, great signs here. Possibly looking at a pedestrian walkway across the river alongside a bridge for lightrail to connect the cities.

They would probably have a stipulation where it would have to be more than 4 lanes that connect W.Sac and sac together as well. Maybe another bridge or widen the tower bridge?

That's a possibility, for sure. But then again, the Tower Bridge is a little ways away from the railyard site, so they might forgo a widening project and instead just build a direct motorway/pedestrian access between the railyard and whatever development may spring up across from it in West Sac. Side benefit is that you now also have two entrances feeding into Old Sac for dining options in between Raley Field and WebbBurkle Palace.

They can build 100 arenas for $40 billion. Seriously, I'm glad that West Sac and Mayor Cabaldon are excited and helping out but most of the funding for that transportation plan is years away. It's a 25 year plan. Hopefully the bridges will happen in the early stages, but just think about how much money that is.

yah 40bil seems a bit high.. Most high rises cost only 500mil.. Not sure what they are planning out there.

Right, 40bil and they are stressing about losing the team?? If I was Gavin Maloof that is a big reason why I want to move 300 pf that can't go to the Kings?? Last night heard grant say studies show Kings would bring 100mil in revenue to the city evey year.

It's easy to say that but these funds have been earmarked for a specific purpose (transportation and infrastructure) by the government. If they just handed us a wad of cash to do whatever with, I'm sure it would go to plenty of stupid pet projects for our local goverment to play with.

If they put wheels on the arena, will it be eligible for federal transportation funding? That will be a big selling point with the Maloofs, they can just wheel the thing down to Anaheim or Vegas on the weekends.

Just looking at a map, I would think you would have one at Richards Blvd. That seems like a no-brainer. Connect 160 and Lighthouse Drive using the major east-west road on the north part of the city? Done.

Probably a few options for the second location. Either a parallel bridge to the I Street bridge to drop into the south side of the Railyards or maybe at about West Sac's A Street to split the difference between I and Richards just south of the water treatment plant and intake.

Interesting.

I know that nobody wants big parking lots or garages in the railyards, and alternative means of transport will be pushed. But West Sac could probably make some money building some lots on their side of the river and charging $15 a car. Arena patrons would have an easy 10 minute walk over a bridge to the railyards.

Better yet, revive the Maglev bullet train project that Arnold wanted so bad and turn the arena into a train station. We'll build a direct line all the way to Anaheim, for all the suckers down there who wanted to take our team away. And the Maloofs can visit on the weekends too.

That is moving forward, except it is not the maglev train. High speed rail has funding to start building track in the next couple years, I think. Will take a while to get to Sac, but it will get here eventually.

Anaheim to Sac in 2.5 hours. I am down with that for a trip to Disneyland.

I recently was on vacation in Paris and took the Eurostar from Paris to London in the morning and back late in the evening. It was about 2:20 each way. It's a very nice alternative to flying.

It is an amazing alternative. We should have built it years ago :(

Here you go. If you want to download 87 MB, the map is on page four. One bridge at Richards another just south of I-5 and a footbridge between Tower and I-5.

These are 2003 plans, but I don't think the gameplan has changed.

Cool, thanks. I will have to check it out sometime. I always forget that West Sac extends so far south. A bridge south of I-5 would be great, as I live in Galt and work in West Sac. Could help reduce my commute!

I'm interested to see what is going to be coming on May 26th. I'm hoping that is when we'll know where the arena site will be and some concept art. I'm pretty sure it's going to be on the city owned land between the Rail Station and the proposed rail relocation. The convergence plan was using that site and had some concepts of combining the train, light rail and bus stations with the arena. But through all the attempts in the railyards, the arena site has shifted site a minimum of three times that I've seen. I wonder if it will move again?

FYI, the thrid site set aside for a sports facility was the section to the right of the "7th St." label.

Trains are ****ing awesome.
Yeah, hopefully CA builds HSR that goes to SoCal and Portland-SEA-Vancouver get one done in the next few years and down the road they can connect the entire west coast. I'd never fly again except to go to Boston or an exotic vacation.

Really looking forward to seeing the next proposal. This looks great.
