Race to the Bottom thread

Hall of Famer
Some people want to tank, some people don’t. There are several ways that folks define a rebuild or tank. A quarter way through the season I figured a dedicated thread was in order given the current standings, trade season and all that jazz.

As of tonight it appears the Grizz have pulled themselves up by their boot straps. They are getting a bit healthier and are only 4 games under .500. The Finals runner ups decided that they probably shouldn’t be the worst team in the league despite injuries and have won 2 in a row. I’m not even going to talk about the Wiz or Nets. I initially thought the Jazz might consider trying to win this year but they have a rough schedule coming up and I think that 6-12 record could get real ugly in 10 games.

5-1 for the Grizz in the last 6. They are cooking’ with Gas and they still don’t have Ja, Pippen or Jerome. They are officially out of the race to the bottom and ready to fight for a top 6 seed. Gotta think they try to move Ja

The Grizz are a weird team, but after some years of kind of wondering what they are doing they all of a sudden have a path to just keeping their guys and letting their youth that they are developing fill in around it. Coward could be legit legit.

Without a Wembanyama or Lebron type consensus #1 generational player; I don't think it matters too much if we pick #1 or pick #5. Sure, great players are often #1 picks, but it's not guaranteed that a #1 pick will be great, and there's a pretty good chance at 2, 3, 4.

Rebuilding isn't gonna be a 1 year project. Set yourself up for the long haul

There some draft gurus that would have Cooper Flagg 3rd in this draft, Peterson is considered the best guard prospect since Kobe for some.

I agree it won’t be a one year rebuild but I’m not interested in a 4 or 5 year rebuild either. ‘27 isn’t a good draft so it’s probably best to try and get a blue chipper this year and then build around that player, Keegan and hopefully a handful of plus role players and then look for a splash. The reality is Wemby and OKC are here for the next 10 years so isn’t going to get easier.

it's never easy in the NBA. before you had OKC, there was Bron and Curry teams had to get through. Before them you had to get through Tim Duncan and the Spurs or Kobe and Shaq. Every era is unique in its own right. I don't put Victor quite in that category, he's another blood clot away from being out for the year and who knows how long he will hold up.

If he does hold up he is on track to be the best player ever. 7’7 Durant, with the defense of Prime AD and the BBIQ of LeBron.

The draft gurus and scouts are wrong as often as they're right about top 5 picks. Historically, the best you can hope for from pre-draft scouting is that half of the top 5 are very good NBA players, and the best player in the draft shows up in the top 5 half the time.

Lebron and Wemby are examples of players that were obviously going to be superstars from years before the draft, and they were easy #1 picks because of the well-deserved hype. But for most great players, it takes a few years to figure out what their career trajectory is going to be. I don't think the Kings should be planning to come out of rebuild until they have a pretty good idea they have at least one special player.

best player ever? no way

26-13-4 on 60% TS while probably being the best defensive player in basketball (no lower than top 5) at age 21?

The skill/talent/production will be there, if he stays healthy. Got to win at least 4 rings, imo, to be in contention for GOAT status, but I think its absurd we can see a world where Wemby does get there

Yeh he led the league in blocks last year despite missing 30 some games. He will be in the conversation to win DPOG every year that he qualifies.

We will see what it looks like in the playoffs but he is off to a crazy start.
