Quincy Douby [and assorted ramblings]

G-League
So...

Douby has been playing last couple of games.

And you know, this season is pretty much gone to hell already. Lottery, playoffs, doesn't matter. We're dead in the water and the only thing that could make it worse is Maloofs deciding, after sleeping through a five hour long Muss' lecture from The Big Book Of Stats To End All Big Books Of Stats(tm), to keep him.

But I still feel like it could get a tiny little bit better. We've seen the kids develop, so it was not entirely a waste. There's still a long way to go for them, but at least we have guys to actually go there.

We've seen Cisco... um... get a bit more controlled (I'm looking for bright points, folks, please don't bring me down), we've seen Price and Williams show exactly why Petrie went to the trouble of signing them, and of course we've all seen Kevin becoming a true force in the league, even if he did run out of gas towards the end of the season. Obviously, they could all play way, way more, but this was as good as we're going to have with the big M at the helm (or maybe the mini-bar, I dunno).

But - bear with me, I'm getting to the point already :D - we still have Douby. And know very little about his play, except that he [edit - forgot to finish this tangent :)] broke all sorts of records and stuff.

So what would really make me smile and say that this last period of trudging towards the end of the season gave at least something - well, apart from JWill^2 finally playing and...

oh my God, I'm never going to finish this post with this stream-of-conscience writing style of mine

So whatever.

Please, Douby, post a 20+ at any one of these two games! I so want you to earn an "Any Questions" thread of your own. That would be a satisfactory end to a non-satisfactory (modestly speaking) season.

The line about Muss and the mini bar was hilarious. Yeah I want to see Douby play well also, he played pretty well on D today but his aggressiveness and play making skills aren't there yet.

douby HAD to have had an "any questions" thread on his big scoring night shortly after getting the nod for having a good practice earlier in the season. ...right?

I doubt Douby gets a lot of playing time. The Kings need to play Bibby for next year so that he can get the kinks out - that's for the new team that he's traded to. And regarding next year, we'll probably get a veteran also-ran point guard in the offseason, which the new coach will play as much as possible in order to make that 8th playoff spot, leaving Douby sitting on the bench for long periods. It will also be interesting to see if the new coach takes half the season to figure out that Garcia needs more than 7 minutes a game to be productive.

I wish we had picked Rondo or Williams. :(

OR Rodriguez. You can hardly fault GP for the good picks we had the past few years being how far they were in the 1st round. I'm not exactly jumping for joy for a 6'3" SG, when we really need a PG not to convert a small SG into a combo guard. I was hoping for 3 or more other PG that we could have selected, but we cannot go back in time and we need to give Douby some time. His is supposed to have a unbelievable shot and once he finds it and gets confidence he should be the player that GP expected and drafted! ;)

The jury is still out. Those guys really haven't shown all that much themselves. Douby hasn't gotten a whole lot of time to prove himself, and there are plenty of guys who have struggled in their first year only to put it together in later years.

Douby has plenty of skills, he just needs floortime to work out the kinks. I'm still excited about him.

marcus williams has had a bit of time, and hes definitely showed that hes got what it takes to make it in the nba as at least a solid point guard under kidds tutelage.

if only douby missed a few shots at the workout, we might have taken who was projected a very early pick before some off court troubles.

Marcus Williams really has not shown very much at all. He has had a few good games, but he's certainly not someone I'm very worried about. Give Douby some time.

Those darn guys aceing their interviews (Douby and Muss)!

The problem is there wasn't a whole lot of potential Douby became a starter on this team and now there is practically zero chance of him becoming a starter. Williams and Rondo are now touted the "next" pg's for their clubs and Rondo is doing really good IMO. We needed a pg more and there was solid prospects left on the board.

Are you saying that Marcus Williams is going to take over Jason Kidd's job? He was drafted to be a backup. Rondo was drafted to be a backup to Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair. So.. what was the harm in drafting Douby as a backup?

Here's the thing about Douby -- he's nearly as athletic as Rondo, he's more athletic than Williams, and he can shoot. Point guards who can't shoot do not have a long shelf life in the NBA, except for TJ Ford, who makes up for it by being the quickest guy in the league. I am not impressed at all by Rondo and Marcus Williams. I don't think the Kings are really missing out on anything. Heck, I'd rather have Ronnie Price than those guys.

Just give Douby some time. People were ready to lynch Kevin Martin after his first season, and look how that turned out.

They were drafted to back them at first, but the nets are planning on making williams their pg once kidd is gone and rondo is already getting a lot of playing time at pg since telfair has bombed and west is a poor excuse for a pg.

In Rondo's starts he's avg 35 mpg, 10 ppg, 5.6 apg, 5.4 rpg, 2.4 spg. Not bad for his rookie year. He's very athletic, long, quick, can penetrate and pass. Shooting can be improved upon and you can definitely survive without it if you're a pg who can penetrate. Unless you think Douby can play starting pg he has no potential to start on this team. Rondo and Williams definitely would since Bibby has one foot out the door.

All you people doubting Douby could be just as embarrassed as those who doubted Kevin, so be careful. ;)

Fair point. :)

For some, it seems the grass is always greener and they don't seem to realize there are 30 teams in the league and no one team is going to always get the best possible player...

I blame all the video games that make it so easy for people to create fantasy teams of whatever players they like.

Douby strikes me as a shooting guard who's game is best served by a pass first point guard or SF, like Bibby (we all know Bibby is not a real dang point guard, don't lie to yourselves). I dunno, I think Douby is gone after next season. Not impressed by him, no room for him on this team, I think he's trade bait.

He doesn't have any trade value yet, we wouldn't get anything back for him...

I say let him have another year in the summer league and give him a chance for next season. Would I rather have Marcus Williams(honestly)? Yeah. But I think Douby can turn out to be a good player too. Some of his one on one moves tonight were really nice. He has a good jump shot. He's got the potential to be a very good defender with his athleticism and long arms. He seems to be a decent ball handler. His aggressiveness isn't really there yet and he also needs to work on his passing(which is a PG's main job) but he has potential and I don't see why he can't improve.

I agree somewhat, but I think it's not about Douby being a "bust" or anything, but more that he doesn't really have a shot at the starting lineup. Rondo or Williams definitely would have.

I too wish GP had taken Rondo or Williams....

BUT...

Douby hasnt gotten as much time as either, and he's shown flashes of both good offense and good defense. He's probably never gonna be a starter (at least on the Kings)...But when he was picked up people were touting him as a Bobby Jackson type of bench sparkplug player...and I can see him getting there for us.

I can understand the desire for Rondo, as he has shown some flashes (due to playing time) and is an athletic, lock down defender (potentially) and a pure point guard.

However, Williams is slow and unathletic (relatively) and while he might show flashes of being a good PG, he really doesn't fit the mold of what the Kings are trying to build. Ditto for Sergio Rodriguez. Anyone who has spent the last few years skewing Bibby for lack of D will not be happy with Williams or Sergio long term.
