Qualifications for the New Coach

Kingster

Hall of Famer
First, I could care less whether he is good with the community. If babies cry when he holds them, hand them a tissue. If he doesn't attend one Monarchs game in his life, I'll forgive him. Also, I don't care whether he is a "friend" to the Maloofs. Or Petrie. Or the players.

Above all, I want the coach to command respect - from everybody in the organization. They don't have to like him. Maybe he comes off a little to arrogant, a little too sure of himself for their taste. So be it. Sure, he's got to know X's and O's. Yes, he must know when to let a player learn from his mistakes and when to yank him because he's making the same mistake over and over again. Yes, he must develop the players' skills. But he must look a player in the eye and communicate what he demands as a coach. He must not be intimidated by his star players. There has got to be a line that he will not allow a player to cross.

And he must not be a toady that is subservient to either Petrie or the Maloofs. What I want is a guy who isn't afraid to disagree with the owners, or Petrie, but at the same time realizes that he's not going to win all the battles. I want him to be a fighter. If he thinks that trading for Artest is foolhardy, I want him to fight for that position with the Maloofs and with Petrie with all his might. And if his personna dwarfs theirs in the media, fine and dandy with me. If he calls out his team in the media for playing defense like wooses, great.

I don't want the "nice-guy" get-along-go-along kind of guy. I want a mensch, not a nebish, as the next coach of the Kings.

You're looking for a Popovich clone. Pop hasn't done so bad with the Spurs, eh? Petrie will have to ship out some of the no-defense guys like Bibby and/or Miller before the Kings get serious about D and rebounding. Artest, if you believe Grant Napear's prediction, will be traded in the offseason. Sooo, the new coach will have plenty of "new" Kings to see things his way - or hit the road.

Sounds alot like Rudy T

?

RudyT was always very much like Rick Adelman -- prototypical nice guy/reach your players coach.

As for overall qualifications -- all of the above are secondary.

here is the one primary qualification: just win baby.

If we have a veteran talented team, then yes, it's that simple. I have the sneaking suspicion though that next year we aren't going to have a veteran, talented team.;) If we have a young team, I don't think it's quite that simple. Then, I wouldn't expect the coach win much over the next year or two. However, I would expect his team to play like a team, play hard, and improve, both individually and collectively.

I hate Al Davis and the Raiders but this is correct. Although I hope it doesn't come at the expense of ugly basketball and our franchise doesn't reverse the trend it started.

But for all Muss's shortcomings if he had been able to win everyone would be singing his praises, just like those that ripped Adelman came around when they realized his gameplans actually worked.

Sort of a cross between Byron Scott and Eddie Jordan I'd say. Both played, both had Adelman as a mentor and both are doing well with quite a rag-tag bunch of guys and strong owners.

Wonder if they will bring in an older, experienced coach as an assistant as Mavs, Spurs and others have done???

Since Kings will not have a "theme" or a "personality" or even a known roster, any coach will need to be a "basics" kind of guy who quickly gains all players' respect. A real toughie in this new environment.

Pop without David Robinson and Tim Duncan backing him 100% might just another Fratello or Carlisle. The same is true with Jerry Sloan. He's a hard case, but he had Stockton and Malone to support him. It's ok to have a disciplinarian coach, just make sure you have the right star players who believe in them. Tricky balance to acheive.

A coah with a backbone may not work well with some players like Artest though I'm thinking Iverson. Some players are near uncoachable or have traits that are hard to deal with. Tru warriors don't take orders it seems. I just want a coach who can unite the team under one banner, playing for a common goal whether its to improve, win games, or win it all.
