Private eye hired by Maloofs

Maloof Private Eye (an ex FBI agent) is calling Sac Business Owners to ask about forgeries on letter sent to NBA Commissioner Stern.

This is the second time I've heard about this PI the Maloofs hired. I'm thinking we are going to get another dog and pony show featuring George playing the victim again.

This doesn't sound like owners who are ready to settle into Sacramento for the long haul does it?

Umm.

Georgie? I think you've got plenty of rope at this point. Time to get a chair. (Metaphorically, of course.)

But more seriously - the Brothers Idiotozov have hired a PI trying to...find evidence that will allow them to accuse David Stern and the NBA of forgery? Really? Really? They're going to go THERE? Because IF there is a way for the league to force them out, they've already got more than three strikes.

1. Being broke
2. Sandbagging the team
3. Lying to the relocation committee
4. Bargaining for an arena in bad faith
5. Damaging the reputation of the NBA in regard to building public-private partnerships with cities in order to house teams - partnerships that are crucial for the future of the league.
6. Threatening anti-trust lawsuits against the league (implicitly and perhaps explicitly as well)

And I'm sure I've missed something. But they want to add to that:

7. Being completely paranoid and accusing the NBA itself of fraud

Any three of these should be good enough to invoke a "best interests of the league" clause. They've already got 6 strikes and they want to add a 7th? Be my guest, morons.

I dont think they are accusing the NBA of anything. I think theyre talking about the letter that business owners sent to the NBA. they think the Business owners had forged signatures

One of my HS mates was one of the ones called. He really signed the letter. Whoops.

Does anyone know if there is any legal reason for the Maloofs being so obsessed with trying to look like their the victims/had no choice? They continually deny wanting to leave despite taking every action to facilitate it, yet they don't just say we're leaving and push it through at the same time. They keep looking for a quick, guiltless escape route as though the public perception really matters. I don't see why they continue to go by that strategy at this point.

Well, it's not like the business owners would have forged their own signatures. They're basically saying the city and the NBA were in cahoots to put together a fraudulent letter. I suppose they could be trying to blame the city itself but at this point the city and the NBA are working so hand-in-hand that it basically boils down to the same thing.

Particularly since 16 of the 25 signed it at a press conference, where it was said that 9 more, who could not attend, would be signing later. http://www.kcra.com/news/30881486/detail.html

Isn't that like the world's worst setup for a forgery plot? With most of them signing in front of the press?

Coinciding almost perfectly with the Carmichael Dave firing, I'd say that this is the Maloofs letting everyone know that the gloves are off, and to either make nice with the Maloofs, or expect to be dragged into litigation and other ugliness.

They can't seriously be thinking they can recover public sympathy. Although if there were poster boys for hubris, the Maloofs would be perfect. I imagine this is about some future litigation. Perhaps even a smear campaign against KJ just before his election. Nothing seems to far for these bozos.

I think they live in their own reality bubble and have no idea how much damage they have done to the team, city, NBA and themselves.

Yeah. It's pretty straightforward: they are trying to paint it as though they are being forced out of town despite their most sincere efforts to stay, so that when they are eventually denied permission to leave, they have a stronger anti-trust suit against the NBA (with possible collusion with the city). For a while now, you can see that every action they take it a way of bolstering their case for later.

They must overcome a perception that they are screwing a city. So far they are on the negative end of the argument. The city was given a year to come up with a reasonable plan to build an arena. The city hustled and did that. That's a huge plus factor for the city. The Maloofs were to contribute about $70 mil. Of that amount, the NBA was going to donate $7 mil and was going to loan the Maloofs the rest of it. That means the Maloofs had to come up with nothing immediately. NOTHING!

These "best interests of the league" clauses are meant to address the reputation of the league. The Maloofs are scrambling to try to keep the league from invoking this clause and have an uphill battle. What more do they want? An arena plan is in the works and it will cost them nothing up front. They are looking like they are taking advantage of the NBA but more so, the city and this is what will invoke that clause.

Now, why on earth except for ego which I think has been destroyed already would they not want to sell? It appears the league has a good case to invoke that clause already. If it is shown that all the signatures are proper, it is yet another slime factor to be spread across the bodies of the Maloof family and yet another reason to invoke that clause.

This is more an educated guess than anything as I don't know the internal workings of the NBA, the general feelings of the other team owners, or the context of that clause but they are doing themselves no favors. What would the average man on the street make of this? Does it appear like the Maloofs are screwing a city? As I am not an unbiased outsider, I can't answer that one.

You ever go to watch a movie and get up and leave because you just can't understand why it was even made in the first place? I feel sometimes like I'm watching that movie but I can't get up and leave. This is truly theater of the absurd.

You know, it could be that the league owners already expressed concern about that letter and the Maloofs are desperately struggling to find a way to discredit it. It could be the Maloofs totally on the defensive.

This was my first thought. The Maloofs tend to be reactive instead of proactive. I wonder if the pressure is already being applied by the NBA.

The Maloofs are the Ishtar of NBA owners

“We got a call from somebody claiming to be a private investigator and trying to get in touch with myself to see if we signed a letter to the NBA commissioner; because they believe our names were forged,” said Lukowicz.

When asked if his name was forged, Lukowicz said, “No they were not.”

How dumb are the boys? Maybe they better check the Declaration of Independence for forged names? That Button Gwinnett signature looks totally fake!

Seriously, they held a press conference about the letter with most of those business owners present. It was all over the news. They probably had to cut off the number of business owners because they didn't have enough room for them all to sign!

I feel so badly for the Maloof PR team. Digging ditches probably sounds pretty good right now for those poor people.

My question is what would be the motive to forge the sigs? And who would have arranged that? The NBA? Think BIG? Do they Maloofs really think either of those entities would either a) need to forge those or b) risk having forged them?? Again, just another insane move. I can't even see the benefit of this for them given their objective to prepare for an anti-trust suit. All this does is make them look slimy and paranoid to a jury. Now I wonder just what kind of case they are trying to build! Or maybe LD is right, this is just a purely desperate, reactionary move.

And are they really going to forge signatures of such prominent people? As if those very people wouldn't have found out about it?!?! Or what, they just didn't have time to sign and said: "Chris, kinda busy now, having a business meeting at Leatherby's, but yeah I'm in, go ahead and sign it for me and send it off to Stern."

If it wasn't so sad it would be hilarious!

The Maloofs are running with this lol okay, Stern is going to show everyone he still has muscle by desolating the Maloofs publicly and tell them to sell or seriously get voted out.

Of course it's their policy not to discuss "internal business," which is Maloof-speak for nefarious doings.

More like:

It is the Kings' and Maloof policy not to discuss issues that we can't spin to not make us look like idiots."

Hey, Maloofs! Mene mene tekel upharsin. The writing is on the wall. The tragedy is that it's in Georgie's script. Time to cut your losses, boys.

I can't really imagine what the purpose is. Worse, if they had any kind of relationship with any of these business owners, they could've called and asked themselves. To me it's just more proof that they are completely out of touch with the business base in this community as well as the fans. It is really just a pathetic self-portrait they keep adding to. Something is seriously wrong with their thinking.
