Power Rankings: Kings could be royal pain with Mobley

The Orlando Magic will enjoy Doug Christie's defense and selflessness, but the Kings got the better end of the deal that brought Cuttino Mobley to Sacramento. It's already beginning to show.

Mobley has come up with critical defensive stops in consecutive wins over the L.A. Clippers, proving the Kings didn't get a total slouch on that side of the ball. That's a huge bonus considering he was brought on board to kick the team's offense up a notch, helping them chase down the Pacific Division's newest superpower, the Phoenix Suns.

The Kings have two of the league's best passing big men in Chris Webber and Brad Miller, a heady, quick point guard in Mike Bibby, and one of the league's best perimeter scorers in Peja Stojakovic. Adding Mobley gives them another playmaker and shooter teams have to respect.

"We're going to present problems for a lot of different teams," Mobley told The Oregonian. "From one to five, I don't know who's better than us, you know what I mean?"

The Kings have won eight of their past 10 and have taken advantage of the Suns' recent road struggles to pull within 4 1/2 games of the division lead. Starting out 1-4 has had them in catch-up mode, but they're finally starting to make headway.

A four-game home stretch begins Tuesday night that will see the Blazers, Cavs, Spurs and Nets come through town.

If Webber's sore left knee holds up and Mobley finds a quick comfort zone, the Kings can take advantage and introduce themselves as a new legitimate contender in the Western Conference race.

To his credit, Mobley has already asserted himself from a vocal standpoint, quickly adapting to his new surroundings.

"In my opinion, and I hope people don't take this the wrong way, but we finally have another loudmouth on this team," said Webber. "Now, I don't have to do all the talking and encouraging. I can just sit back and listen. I like the fact I have another guy on the team who is vocal and a leader in his own way."

We have a feeling the results he'll help bring will also be met with resounding favor.

The Power Rankings through games of Jan. 17:

POWER RANKINGS

Current Team Previous
1 Phoenix Suns 1
The Suns' rear-view mirror now looks a lot more crowded, but they remain the pace car provided Steve Nash is back and healthy.

2 Seattle SuperSonics 2
The unheralded point guard duo of Luke Ridnour and Antonio Daniels has been extremely productive.

3 San Antonio Spurs 3
It had to be encouraging to see Brent Barry and Devin Brown emerge with Manu Ginobili out. When all is said and done, the Spurs' depth may be what guides them to the top.

4 Miami Heat 4
Back home after an exhausting trip out west, expect the Heat to re-establish their positive momentum.

5 Sacramento Kings 7
Sparkplug Eddie House, who happens to be Mike Bibby's brother-in-law, will have an opportunity to help replace injured super-sub Bobby Jackson.

6 Detroit Pistons 8
The Pistons have finally gotten things together. You didn't expect they would just concede the East to Miami, did you?

7 Dallas Mavericks 5
The Mavs' solid depth helped get them through a tough stretch where Marquis Daniels, Erick Dampier and Josh Howard were all hampered.

8 Cleveland Cavaliers 6
Like all Eastern Conference teams that venture west, the Cavs have struggled to find their way. The trip continues this week.

9 Washington Wizards 10
Jarvis Hayes, off a mild concussion, delivered a career-high 27 points in a loss at San Antonio. He'll be a valuable part of the offense with Larry Hughes sidelined.
10 Memphis Grizzlies 12
The Grizzlies' Jan. 19 visit to Phoenix will tell us whether they're for real; they've won nine of 10 entering the contest.

11 Houston Rockets 11
With the Rockets' backcourt finally producing consistently, it's time for the bigs to get their act together. Listening, Yao?

12 Los Angeles Lakers 9
Based on his current rate of production, it will take rookie starter Sasha Vujacic four games to score as many points as Kobe Bryant averages in one.

13 Minnesota Timberwolves 13
Wrestling to stay above .500, the T-Wolves embark on a critical three-game road trip for games against the Lakers, Sonics and Blazers.

14 Orlando Magic 15
Coach Johnny Davis plans to keep Hedo Turkoglu in the starting lineup for the time being, leaving Doug Christie with a reserve role.

15 Chicago Bulls 17
Scott Skiles deserves the bulk of the credit now that the work he's put in with Chicago's youngsters is producing positive results.

16 Indiana Pacers 16
Jonathan Bender has returned to the Pacers' lineup and should give their frontcourt scoring a lift once he shakes off the rust.

17 Los Angeles Clippers 21
If Bobby Simmons isn't the league's single most underrated player, we don't know who is.

18 Boston Celtics 18
Once Al Jefferson is ready to play 25-30 minutes a night, the Celtics will become the team to beat in the Atlantic.

19 New York Knicks 14
The Knicks have plenty of interesting pieces to work with, but finding the right combination every night has been their main problem.

20 Philadelphia 76ers 20
The Sixers have dropped their past three away from home and come up on a dangerous stretch where five of their next six will be on the road.

21 Toronto Raptors 24
Given all the trade rumors surrounding them, you have to tip your hat to Donyell Marshall and Jalen Rose for being able to focus solely on helping the Raptors win, regardless of their fluctuating roles.

22 Portland Trail Blazers 19
Darius Miles has finally become a productive wing by getting away from forcing shots from the perimeter and relying on his strengths.

23 Denver Nuggets 23 Considering how slowly he has developed, Nikoloz Tskitishvili has to be considered one of the bigger lottery busts of the past five years.

24 New Jersey Nets 22
It will be interesting to see how Ron Mercer's imminent return affects Rodney Buford, who has been playing well in place of the injured Richard Jefferson.

25 Golden State Warriors 27
With Jason Richardson back, the Warriors can continue growing up.

26 Utah Jazz 26
Andrei Kirilenko is expected to return this weekend, but the Jazz probably fell too far behind in his absence to make a serious playoff push.

27 Milwaukee Bucks 25
Well, they're better than the Bobcats.28Atlanta Hawks29Slowly but surely, the Hawks are improving. They should have an exciting second half of the season.

29 Charlotte Bobcats 28
It certainly looks like this gutsy expansion team is starting to run a little low on fuel.

30 New Orleans Hornets 30
The latest Baron Davis ankle injury isn't expected to cost him significant time. Good news, considering the Hornets have no prayer of competing without him.

does the picture of mobley in this article remind you of somebody? ;)

its awfully close.....

Good observation. Seems that he is making a concious effort to replace Christine. But he wouldn't want to go all the way ;)

not to sound too much like a homer, but...HOW SWEET IT IS!;) Miller/Webb/Peja/Cat/Bibby...WOW!
I can easly say that we have the best 5 in the NBA , we will be the best when its all said and done...

Strange thing:

CBS, Kerr and CNNSI put Suns at the first place although all admitted the loosing streak (foru in a row). But when Kings return from the trip 2-2, they are immidiately slide couple position down.

What's up with that?

*ducking and avoiding Slim's toilet flash* :D

Well, the Kings' losses did come against the dregs of the league, and the suns have a good excuse in Steve-o's injury, which isn't serious enough to jeopardize their standing. The Kings have only themselves to blame.

PLEASE!!! Maybe if the Kings become favorites to win it all they can be referred to as "new" favorites, but to claim they are new contenders implies that they are all of a sudden one of the best in the league. This is nothing "new".

I was just watching NBA TV INSIDERS on NBA TV ofcourse...and they were kinda going over the match up of tonights game (it being on NBA TV and all)

any you who...they were saying some real good things about us...which is the first in a long time from any media outlet...but they were saying how the trade was great on our side of things and we have a hard team to match up with cuz we got 4 all star caliber guys 2 big men who can pass and heck out of the ball which as we all know is a rarity in the NBA and then newly added Cuttino...they were saying how we've been flying under the radar a bit (14 games over .500)...cuz everyones been talking about SA, PHO, and Seattle..but they wouldn't be surprised if we came out of the west
especially now

but here we are sitting pretty at #5 in the power rankings and no one is talking about us...i believe that to be a good thing...we can sneak in for an attack

Isn't serious enough to jeapordize their standing? We are only 3 games back in the loss column now, it already has...

I'll wait and say something after we start dominating and beating GOOD teams. It does look promising though.

Wow Kerr actually put another team that doesn't sport black & silver ahead in the rankings.

No, just second to the Suns -- Nash,Joe,Q-Rich,Shawn,Amarè

That by far to me is the best starting 5 in the NBA today! Very young and athletic!
