Postgame Quotes-vs. Memphis

Brian Skinner:
“I keep saying it. We’ve got guys who can put numbers up. We’ve got Peja, we’ve got Mike, we’ve got guys who can put numbers up. I think one thing we needed to add was defensive intensity. On the defensive side, we’ve got to get some key stops, block shots, and make sure we get some rebounds.”

Maurice Evans:
“We knew with Kenny (Thomas) out, with Brad (Miller) out, with different guys out, we would have to try to attack the boards more. That’s something we’ve been lacking all season and I think we’re starting to realize that we can be a lot better rebounding team than what we were.”

“Mike and Peja are definitely both very capable. It’s just really good we have a guy that can step up and make a shot when it counts.”

darius_songaila.jpg

Darius Songaila:
“It was a [designed] play. Mike caught the ball a little out there, but it was for him.”

“We were getting good shots, open shots. The ones that were hitting in the first and second quarter, weren’t going down in the end. In the end it came down to getting big stops on the defensive end and Mike making that big shot.”

“Look at Brian [Skinner], he’s out there battling, blocking shots and Corliss and those guys bring that toughness in and I think it shows.”

Mike Bibby:
“It (the last play) was drawn up, but to get a shot off, that was the main thing.”

On whether the last entry pass was deflected:
“Yeah, it was hit, but that’s how it goes sometimes.”

“We gave them a run, and we couldn’t score for a little bit, they kept coming back. But we got what we wanted, we got the defensive rebound and we got the last shot.”

“We’re just having a good time together. On the road, it was a kind of spur of the moment thing. We just had to get them in and play them (the new guys) kind of blindly. But now, everybody’s playing well, everybody’s playing hard and we’re getting wins.”

On whether he likes having the game on his shoulders with 1.4 seconds left:
“Yeah, I like it.”

MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES

Coach Mike Fratello:
“They did not start the clock and the ball was deflected. Therefore, the game should have been over and we should be in overtime right now playing. But because they do not have the power to correct an incorrect decision we have a team with a loss right now that still should be playing.”

“They said they saw the ball deflected, but they also said they are not allowed to change that and that they can only judge on whether it was out of [Mike] Bibby’s hands in time.”

“We didn’t question whether it was out of Bibby’s hands or not, we question whether the clock started on time; which it did not start on time. I don’t care what anybody tells me. You can’t approximate how much time was lost by the time our guy deflected it, it went in the air and Michael caught it. That’s why the ball died like a quail and changed direction. That’s why it was short and Michael had to run to it, because it got deflected. Which we said from the time the game ended that it got deflected. The clock did not start.”

“We did a certain way, he [Posey] did it exactly right, he got his hands up with his long arms and deflected the ball. The clock did not start then. The clock started when Bibby caught the ball.”

James Posey
Did Mike get the shot off?
“We’ll never know.”

“You just have to play the game out and give yourself the chance to win. NBA teams make runs. They made a run, we made a run, they made a run, and we made a run. They make the basket and they won. So that’s what happened. You have to give them credit. They did what it took to win the game tonight and they deserve it.”

“You always get a great show when you come to ARCO (Arena). That’s what it is, a show. That’s what you’re going to get.”

Earl Watson
“I knew it was going to him [Bibby]. I wanted to open and go back through, but the ankle was not good enough for that. I chased him and I fought him. [James] Posey tipped the ball, great defense on the ball. He [Mike Bibby] caught it and he hit a big shot. He’s hit big shots his whole career since I’ve seen him play, so [it was a] total Bibby shot.”

“He’s always hit big shots and that was a huge shot off the backboard. I don’t think he called glass [laugh]. But it was a tough shot.”

This is a quote from Pedja that I found in Blic - newspaper

We needed a miracle (talking about last play) because I for one did not have anything left to play overtime. I was mentally in the shower and it would have been very hard for me to get back in case of overtime. - admitted Stojakovic who had to work very hard for his 19 pts.

thx for posting KK

well i sure did call glass...that shot once he heaved it didn't have a shot of going into the basket unless it was banked...and i knew that was exactly what was gonna happen

James Posey's "We'll never know" answer reminds me of us after the Phoenix/Dallas games...been there Posey...but i don't feel bad for you guys

"I was mentally in the shower and it would have been very hard for me to get back in case of overtime."

at least he was honest...i really like that "mentally in the shower" part...hehehe

JP took Peja completely out of the game in 4th...it would of taken a lot for him to get back into the sink of things

im glad to hear im not the only was not mentally prepared for the game to go into OT...i wouldn't of been able to watch

I like how Mike admits that the play was not called correctly, but that is how it goes. When Dallas and Phoenix had their game-ending bad-calls, I do not recall them admiting to anything... Bibby is a class-act in my book.

there is a similar quote in the yahoo game recap.

``I was just hoping for a miracle, because I didn't have the strength for an extra five minutes,'' said Stojakovic, who scored 19 points on 6-of-18 shooting. ``I was already in the shower. I wasn't coming back.''

Defense…
It’s way too early to be definite about it, but the early returns suggest that the Kings have significantly improved on the defensive side of the ball with the acquisition of Brian Skinner, Kenny Thomas, and Corliss Williamson.

Sacramento has given up 85 and 82 points in the two games at ARCO since the trade, and has looked much better at both rebounding and defending the paint. Skinner has become a force in particular, at times looking like a mini-Ben Wallace with his rebounding and blocked shots.

It has actually been the offensive to struggle lately, mainly because of injuries to Cuttino Mobley and Brad Miller.

Miller really is the key to the whole thing offensively. His passing abilities at the high post, which were recently rated by ESPN as the best in the league, make the Kings offense flow much smoother. He also forces teams to step out and guard him on the perimeter.

Battle of the Injuries…
There was almost as much firepower sitting on both benches dressed in street clothes on Tuesday as there was on floor, actually playing.

Both teams have been hit hard by injuries and have been forced to play with limited rotations.

Paul Gasol, Stomile Swift and Bonzi Wells missed the game for Memphis, while Sacramento was without Miller, Mobley, and Kenny Thomas, who was out of town due to the passing away of his grandmother.

While Gasol and Wells will still be out for some time, the rest of the players mentioned should be back within the week.

Random Thoughts...
*One thing about controversial calls in the NBA, they tend to even out. Sacramento was on the wrong end of two questionable goaltending calls last month that ended up playing a part in two losses. On Tuesday they got one back.
*Immediately after Mike Bibby hit the crazy shot to win the game, Rick Adelman put his hands on his head and looked over at Mike Fratello, shrugging his shoulders as if to say, “Sorry it had to end like that.” Adelman has been on the other end of those situations and knows how bad it can feel.
*Mike’s shot will go down as one of the top-three buzzer shots to end a game in Sacramento’s regular season history. The other two come via Mitch Richmond—one was an alley-oop layup pass from Billy Owens to Mitch with a second left to beat the mighty Trail Blazers at ARCOin the mid-90's. The other was a shot eerily similar to Mike’s, a bank three-pointer to beat the Warriors at the buzzer in Oakland.
*The Kings offensive system is becoming the West Coast offense (football) of basketball, thanks to the success the Kings are having at making players look good. Rick Adelman and Co. are able to assimilate new players into the offense, make them look good, and also make them happy with the amount of touches they get. I’m surprised more teams haven’t copied Sacramento, ala teams copying the San Francisco 49er’s offense in the 80’s and 90’s.
*Mo Evans is looking like Dennis Rodman these days, pulling down double-digit rebounds for the second straight game from the two-guard spot.
*I think things can sometimes get stale even for fans, despite the team winning. These recent trades seemed to have spiced things up for the ARCO crowds, who have been more rowdier during the last two games than all season.

"Mo Evans is looking like Dennis Rodman these days"

Id say mostly in his high flying attempts at snagging the ball in the middle of the air...its almost an over exaggerated jump towards/at the ball much like DRodman use to do
