Kings Coach Rick Adelman

“That was just a terrific win. We didn’t have Chris Webber, Peja Stojakovic or Cuttino Mobley tonight, but all we talked about before the game is that it doesn’t matter if you’re short-handed. If you compete, play hard, and play together you’re going to give yourself a shot. Our guys really played hard, especially when they jumped up on us in that overtime and it looked like it was over with, and we responded. Our guys came through.”

On the key to the comeback: “I had planned on using the zone all along, but I didn’t want to do it in the first half. I just wanted to take them out of their rhythm. Being short-handed like that, we didn’t want to get in foul trouble and we wanted to give our guys, well, not rest, but keep them from running around too much. We never quit, and we made some huge plays. I can’t say enough about our group.”

“Getting wins like this is just huge, will all these guys out. We could have won last night, and to come back after last night and win tonight is just huge for us.”

“We had to have big games from Mike Bibby and Brad Miller, or we weren’t going to win this game with the other three starters out. If you watched the first half when I took them out, we just stopped. I had to keep them in the game for us to have any chance at all to win it. It really puts the other team at a disadvantage when you have guys that can make shots like that.”

Brad Miller
“We’ve got a lot of guys who can play on this team. All the guys who are here got here for a reason and they proved that they deserve to play in this league. We’ve got a lot of guys who can play that people have never heard of, and we’re just trying to play as a team and trying to maintain while guys are out.”

“I wanted to come out and play a lot better than I did last night, and that’s just what happened. That’s the best thing about this league, you can have an off night and you can be lucky enough to go out there the next night and redeem yourself.”

mike_bibby.jpg
Mike Bibby:
“We played good. We were kind of slow in the first half, just trying to help each other out. It’ll be a lot easier if we help each other, work a little bit harder on defense and things will be a little bit better.”

On Brad Miller:
“He always does that. He always does dirty work.”

“We played hard. We think we can win every game regardless of who is playing. So we came with a lot of confidence and we played good. We went to zone and stepped up the middle a bit and we started helping each other a lot more.”

“We always love our fans regardless of where we’re playing. We’re glad that they come see us.”

Maurice Evans:
“It was rough. I was missing dunks and making mistakes I don’t normally make. It’s tough sometimes when you take games off you to find your rhythm but I stuck with it and I was proud of the win; that’s what’s the most important. I’m proud of our team for stepping up to the diversity that we’ve been going through the past couple weeks.”

GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS

Coach Mike Montgomery
“It’s a part of the game. (Jason Richardson) had a great offensive performance, there’s no question about that. It clearly wasn’t his fault. If he makes both (free throws), obviously, it’s a different situation, they’ve got to score or we go to a second overtime. If he makes a move the basket, gets fouled, and the ball goes down, it’s a three point play. We just can’t get a play at the end of a game.”

“Brad Miller gets 38, rolls down the middle and lays it up for a two point lead. We had a six point lead in overtime, and all of a sudden we start running around trapping. Instead of guarding them and making them make shots, we start trapping them and they get a wide-open three. It just changes the whole complexion, we have to be more disciplined consistently at the end of the game. We have to know how to win – that’s something we got to learn.”

On whether the Warriors shot too many three-pointers:
“No question. Without a real inside presence, it’s hard to attack a zone. We tend in our minds to look at a zone differently. We don’t attack a zone enough. We put the ball over our heads and look for something that’s really not there. You’ve got to attack a zone.”

Jason Richardson:
“I missed some free throws and lost the game tonight. I don’t have any lack of confidence, I just have to knock down those free throws and I just didn’t do my job tonight.”

“That’s what I want. I want to be the difference maker. I had the game in my hands tonight, but couldn’t pull through. I’m not going to get down on myself, I just have to continue to fight and play hard.”

Eduardo Najera:
On Brad Miller’s performance:
“He played very well tonight. He was making all kinds of shots and ended up with 38 points.”

“This one was a tough one to lose, but we have 35 more games left and we just have to keep going and practice hard and do our best in the games.”

The Inside Dish at Golden State

by Devin Blankenship | February 2, 2005 | Kings @ Golden State

Must See TV…
It doesn’t matter that the Kings were missing three-fifths of their starting lineup and their best bench player in Bobby Jackson, or that the Warriors were also missing three of their starters and were almost as banged up, Wednesday night was a HELL of a basketball game—probably one of the most exciting NBA contests of the year.

It was one of those games that qualifies under the classic sports clichés—you hate to see one team come out as the loser.

But considering how injured the Kings are, the fact that they lost a tough game the night before against Seattle, and that they were down 12 points at the half and six points early on in overtime, it was a great win that they’ll gladly take over a last-place team. In fact, the victory has to rank as one of the best wins of the year for the Kings.

Sacramento showed so much heart and determination in never giving up, even when it looked really bleak, that they probably could have flown home on pure adrenaline .

Three Cheers For Rick…
If not for Brad Miller, the player of the game would have been Rick Adelman.

His decision to switch to a zone defense in the third quarter was the main reason Sacramento was able to crawl back in the game and control Jason Richardson, if only temporarily.

The Warriors looked confused and unsure of themselves in the zone at first, and only really began to get comfortable against it in overtime. Unfortunately for them, it may have come too late to ward off the Kings.

Random Thoughts...
Jason Richardson has always had the potential tag—in that he has so much potential, people wonder when he’s going to put it all together and have a breakout season. Well, he may be in the midst of doing that right now. Richardson made so many plays on Wednesday night to help his team that it would take up half this space chronicling them. Unfortunately for him he missed two free throws at a crucial time, but the play in which he shot a three and missed, but managed to tip the ball before it went out–of-bounds to Dale Davis was unbelievable. In addition, these last two games he’s had against Sacramento has qualified him to go on my Kings Killer list, right alongside uber-members Rodney Rodgers and Robert Horry.
Can you imagine how well these guys are going to sleep tonight? They played short-handed in a tough game last night, then in an overtime where all of the starters registered over 40 minutes. Brad said it best after the game, “I’m exhausted.”
Loved watching Chris on the bench with his lucky Kings warm-up shirt. He kept holding it up to the crowd and touching it when the Kings needed a play.
That’s gotta be a nice welcome back for Maurice Evans. “Nice to see you, hope your groin is fully healed cause you’re playing at least 40 minutes.” Maurice started slowly in the first half but heated up after the break and eventually hit a huge three-pointer in overtime that was key to the Kings win.
Two guys whose contributions can’t be overlooked are Darius Songaila and Matt Barnes. Darius has done so well filling in for Chris Webber and Matt is just a playmaker—how many times though on Wednesday did he have the ball roll off the rim after making an athletic move to the basket?
I will be 95 years old and it will never cease to amaze me how Kings fans infiltrate other team’s arenas, most specifically the Arena in Oakland. The thing about that facility is that it offers a lot of Kings fans who can’t get tickets to ARCO to travel a relatively short distance to see their favorite team. Still, it has to tick off the long time Warriors fans to see half the arena filled with purple.
If the Kings had lost this game, I’m sure a lot of fans would have felt like that young Sacramento fan sitting in the front row at Oakland who got absolutely run over and crushed by a hustling Adonal Foyle in the second half. Like a trooper though, the kid stuck it out the rest of the game.
<li>Finally, if Mike Bibby does not make the All-Star team, it will be a crying shame.

Brad Miller
The big fella and reigning player of the week had a career-high 38 points and literally carried this team on his back.

Brad Miller’s driving, loopy, high-arching shot that hit a near the top of the backboard and softly fell in the basket to give the Kings a two-point lead with 45 seconds to go in overtime.

I agree with the zone defense. Warriors isn't a great jump shooting team.

They didn't add this quote from Brad here. But on the post game interview, a reporter asked Brad what he thinks of his team, he said "heart and determination". :) Can't agree more. Hope Brad's sleeping right now. Hehe.
