Postgame Quotes-at Boston

Kings Coach Rick Adelman
“(Chris) had a huge game, 17 rebounds, 12 assists. Tough shooting night but he stayed with it. Did a lot of good things. As the game wore on, (Webber) came up with some big plays down the stretch.”

“We really needed people like (Mike). We’ve had some tough games. The last 4 we lost were all 2 or 3 point games. It looked like the same thing was going to happen tonight. We were right there, they took the lead, but Mike’s 3 was huge. Then we got that rebound, Maurice made those 2 close free throws. It was obviously a win we really needed. We’re starting this road trip, and 9 of our’ next 10 on the road, so it was a big game for us.”

“It’s always been a problem for us. The ones they got back were long rebounds. We really have to find a way to trace those down. That last possession where we kept tipping it and Webb finally got his hands on it was huge. We’ve been giving up a lot of those situations. In the first half the same thing defensively. Weak side we were awful. I told them at halftime, if you want to stop a losing streak, the way you’re going about it is not going to do it. Our opponents averaged 117 points in the four games we lost before this, and they were all close. So I’m not concerned about the offense it’s the other end. We just give up so many baskets. In the fourth we were much more active and we really helped each other.”

“Down the stretch we really could have imploded and we didn’t do that. Having a guy like Mike (bibby) who screams at you when you don’t shoot the ball is encouraging. Then having a coach that’s says shoot is encouraging. We just have a really positive atmosphere. We are finding ourselves. We are redefining our new identity with the people we have. We had a great win against a team that played their butts off tonight. Boston has great one-on-one players like Ricky and Paul. We really had to trust each other tonight. We were really prepared in the second half to make those rotations. I couldn’t imagine what it would have been like to lose five in a row. I probably lost 15 in row earlier in my career. I couldn’t imagine losing five in a row with these guys. It has been frustrating because we have playing well. We have lost a couple of games by two or three points. Regardless of the excuses, we felt that they were close games. Sometimes you have to think along with your effort and we did that tonight.”

“It’s funny, I was talking to one of the ball boys and was saying that this is one of the best places to have a triple-double. We were talking before the game about how (Larry) Bird averaged 25-7-7 and those types of numbers. Those are the guys I idolize, like magic and all the guys who did big stuff. We those guys had injuries they had to adapt their games and that’s all I am trying to do. I want to be known as a complete player and I know I have a lot to work on. Hopefully I will get there.

Cuttino Mobley:
“It was a big game man. Chris (Webber) had another triple-double. Mike (Bibby) had a key three at the end. That’s what those guys are supposed to do. This game was fun for me. I loved it. I played with some of my boys. GP (Gary Payton) raised me in the league. Paul (Pierce) and I have been playing with each other since college. I play hard but you have to come on the other end of it too. It is all fun and games. Tonight was huge. We are happy but now we have to play another tough team at home in Chicago. This is fun.

Maurice Evans:
“Its very important to win with defensive effort like we did. Our offense isn’t always going to be there so we needed to establish ourselves on defense now if we want to go far in the playoffs. This win was huge. We are on the road and we had a four game losing streak and we just wanted to pull out a victory at the end of a game…. We got a lot of open shots tonight because they were double teaming (Chris) Webber and Brad (Miller). Those guys can score. So, I got a lot of open shots out there and was able to knock some down.

“Chicago has been playing with a lot of confidence lately. They have put together some wins. We cannot underestimate them. We have to go in there with the same type of effort that we had tonight.”

BOSTON CELTICS

Coach Doc Rivers
“That was a horrible loss. You know, I guess relatively speaking when you talk about the Kings it was a low scoring game. They only shot 45% and they scored 104 points. But I thought at the end of the day, what I talked about yesterday, ball watching, would be the reason we lost the game. And I thought that was the reason we lost the game, especially down the stretch. We started taking our eyes off our men and they moved around and got shots. Offensively I really thought the last four minutes, even though we made some shots I thought we got lucky on most points. I thought we stopped moving. I thought we stopped moving the ball; we stopped sharing the ball. And that was something we had done early in the season. So, I don’t know, this was a really disappointing loss for me because I thought we did everything to do to win this game. Second unit didn’t play. I don’t know if they didn’t come to play, but they didn’t play well and that hurt us. I hate going that long with Gary (Payton), 10 minutes, but I thought Marcus (Banks) was struggling; obviously Delonte (West) was struggling, so I had to play him. Just a tough loss, though.”

“No, not intimidated. I just thought we stopped playing. Sometimes you play a team with their reputation, I guess, and you stop playing. You start looking at the score and hoping the game ends quickly. You know, ‘we got a lead.’ And I just thought we stopped playing. We’re better than what we played the last four or five minutes of the game, I know that. And we’ve been playing better than that. So that was a game, to me, that we let get away. But that’s okay; I mean, we’ve obviously won some games that a lot of coaches probably have left this building saying the same thing. This is a tough loss for us, it really is. I thought it was a game we should have won.”

“I expect to win every night at home. And when we have a lead like we had, I expect to win that. Even if it’s a one or two point game down the stretch. Ricky (Davis) made a huge shot, I just thought all the – We did enough to win the game, but we just didn’t take the game, is basically what I’m trying to get to. The game was there and it looked like neither team wanted to grab it, and at the end (Mike) Bibby grabbed it.”

Raef LaFrentz
“Sacramento tries to play like that. When you get up on them ten, twenty, whatever – they are such a dangerous offensive team that they can come back from any margin. They came out and relaxed a little bit, took the opportunity when they got hot, and carried it out through the end of the game.”

“We battled the whole game. We were right there. We were making some decent plays of our own. Their shooters got hot; Bibby got free; they got a couple of looks, and a good shooter, if you give a shooter like [Bibby] time, and he’s going to hurt you.”

Ricky Davis
“It was a tough loss. We should have had those guys beat by ten. But we let them get life and they came back and beat us. They stayed with us throughout the game, and the last twelve minutes they just played hard. If you’re not focused and ready to go, they’re going to beat you every time.”

“That’s what we’ve been doing lately. We’ve been sharing the ball pretty good. Guys are getting good looks; guys are getting good shots. We just needed to buckle down and play defense there at the end.”

The Inside Dish

by Devin Blankenship | February 13, 2005 | Kings @ Boston

Phil? Phil Connors?...
Phil Connors has awoken, and it’s not Groundhog Day anymore.

No more Punxsatawney Phil, no more stepping in the same water puddle to avoid insurance salesman Ned Ryerson, and no more waking at 6:00 am and having to re-live the whole day over again. The Sacramento Kings have finally broken the curse and won a game had to be decided in the final minutes.

Sacramento has been in its own personal hell this week, reliving the same loss over and over again much in the same way Bill Murray had to do in the classic comedy (in my opinion anyways) Groundhog Day. Three games against tough opponents—three games in which the Kings followed the same exact script of playing well for most of the game, but falling short in the end.

All three contests spotlighted the Kings shortcomings in giving up too many offensive rebounds and allowing easy baskets in the paint, but also showed that Sacramento has the firepower to keep up with the best in the West. Two of the games even had the same ending, with the Kings on the wrong end of bad goaltending calls by officials.

Sunday’s game was headed in the same direction, and Kings fans were getting mentally prepared to hear “I Got You Babe,” on the alarm clock radio again tomorrow morning after the Celtics took a one-point lead with under a minute to go. But thankfully Mike Bibby came through in the clutch and the Kings were able to hold off the C’s in the final seconds.

It looks like tomorrow is going to be a sunny day after all.

Wrong Foot…
This season started off on the wrong foot for Peja Stojakovic and just hasn’t seemed to correct itself.

The latest problem came in the first half when Stojakovic pulled a hammy and ended up missing the rest of the game. This injury comes after he seemed to be getting his legs back after missing time due to back spasms last month. Hamstrings are tough injuries to contend with, and the best thing for Peja may be to shut it down until the All-Star break.

The good news is that Maurice Evans flourished in Stojakovic’s absence, scoring 17 points and hitting the game-clinching free throws. His athleticism also played a part in keeping Paul Pierce from going squirrelly in the fourth quarter.

Random Thoughts…
At least the week ended on a good note. A 1-3 record, a four-game losing streak, no selections to the All-Star team, and two losses involving questionable calls by refs made this one of the worst weeks in recent Kings seasons. The only real highlight of the week is that President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie agreed to a contract extension that will keep the architect of the Kings success in Sacramento for some time.
The Kings were holding out hope that either Chris Webber or Mike Bibby might still be added to the All-Star game if Kobe Bryant wasn’t able to recover from a sprained ankle in time, but those hopes were dashed when Bryant played on Sunday against the Cavs.
<LI>Three triple-doubles in five games? Chris Webber could probably average one the rest of the season if he totally focused on it.

Mike Bibby

Dime started slow but picked it up in the second half, finishing the game with 27 points

Mike Bibby’s three-pointer of course was the biggest shot of the game, putting the Kings up by two points with 40 seconds to go in the game.

Yeah, it was a very, very, very bad week for the Kings! Glad that week is now over.

haha i think Mr. LaFrentz was not only talking about yesterdays game (when they were up by 10) but also the game against them earlier in the season at ARCO when we came back from 20 down
