ROSEVILLE, Calif. - A single-engine plane that appeared to be performing an aerobatic stunt lost control and crashed into a suburban home Sunday, killing at least one person on board the plane and sparking a fire that gutted the house, police said.

The crash killed the pilot, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and local police. But there were conflicting reports about whether there were other fatalities or if the home was occupied at the time.

The FAA reported two deaths, including the pilot, but fire and police officials at the scene said only the pilot was killed. The FAA also said two people were missing in the homes, but local authorities reported the houses were unoccupied.

The plane appeared to be doing an aerobatic maneuver when it crashed just before 11:30 a.m., Roseville Police spokeswoman Dee Dee Gunther said.

"The pilot appeared to be coming down low for some kind of maneuver that brought him to within 500 feet of the rooftops," she said. "And then he appeared to lose control and crashed into one of the houses."
Rick Wurster, who lives about a half mile from the crash, saw the plane attempting to make a figure eight.

"He couldn't pull up because he didn't have enough altitude," Wurster said. "I saw him do two spins and then go over the tree line. A second later, I heard two booms."

The pilot wasn't communicating with air traffic controllers at the time of the crash, Gunther said.

The crash also set fire to two neighboring homes, said Bruce Nelson, an operations officer for the FAA in Los Angeles.

"The main house has substantial damage but the other two, their damage isn't going to be as much," he said.

Roseville is about 16 miles northeast of Sacramento.

Plane Crashes into House in Roseville, Killing Four
Written for the web by Elizabeth Bishop, Internet News Producer

A single-engine plane crashed into a house in Roseville this morning, killing four people and sparking a fire that spread to a second residence, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.

A Glasair plane crashed into the house at 1302 Longfellow Circle, near Woodcreek Oaks and Pleasant Grove Boulevard at about 11:30 this morning.

Two people on the plane and two people inside the house were killed, according to FAA spokesman Bruce Nelson.

From Air10, it appears the crash demolished one entire side of the house's second floor. There is also extensive fire damage.

Witnesses told News10 the plane was performing barrel maneuvers and "showing off" just before it crashed.

Multiple fire and police agencies are at the scene. Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration will try to determine the cause of the crash.

It was also not immediately known where the plane took off.

As is stands right now, it's just the two fliers that are confirmed, but the couple of the house who were not home at the time's young 18 year old son is missing. That does not sound good and this story is very sad.

What were those people thinking flying tricks over a residential neighborhood?... this was bound to happen. Not to mention what they did was highly restricted! I cannot imagine the horror the young man's parents will be going through, and what they have already gone through.

I feel for the families of the two flyers too, but I would have been nagging in my husband's ear every single day to get him not to do that - so dangerous!

What was that idiot pilot thinking?? How dare he endanger lives and destroy homes like that. And the news this morning said that some of his family members were witnessing the flight and filming video. I hope all families involved, including the pilot's, have good insurance policies to pay for this mess.

I live in Rocklin and the plane was flying way low over our neighborhood just before the crash. Pure stupidity.

Stupidity is right. Glad all is well with you and your family, Ryle. That is a lot closer call than anyone wants to experience.

News10 is confirming that the 19-year-old son was in the house at the time. His body was found a short while ago...

My sincere condolensces to all concerned. The stupidity of the pilot has cost a lot of people grief that could have been totally and completely prevented.

:(

This has just gotten even more tragic. I am so sorry to hear that the young man was indeed inside the house at the time and perished. Now a completely innocent person is dead as a result of the immense stupidity and carelessness of the pilot and his cronies.
