Petrie interview about Casspi:

Added bonus in that this article lays to rest the idea that Petrie tries to pick strictly by generic BPA. "He was the best player available for the needs we had to fill."

I like how he mentioned Casspi not giving up even though the game (hoops summit) was a blowout.

GP is sick of seeing the players he is handing out millions to dog it on the court.

Now hopefully Casspi can maintain that heart and hustle through an entire SEASON of blowouts!!! Haha.

It should have been B.J. Mullens then, since we already have the likes of Nocioni/Greene. All the talks about Chandler, Gortat, Fesenko, Kravstov. etc. etc. could have been avoided.

I think at #4 you pick BPA, but later in the draft you can look more at needs.

Well... Geoff is saying that he takes into account what HE thinks of as needs. No guarantee anyone else is going to agree with him about what those needs are.

Given the difference of opinion pre-draft here in kingsfans.com, Geoff was pretty much screwed with some people, no matter who he picked at each position.

No matter who you pick at this spot, there will be talk:

Draft Express said:
Mullens is still a fairly mistake-prone player, which is likely a product of his average basketball IQ. He often looks somewhat absent-minded boxing out opponents and such, and thus ranks as a pretty average rebounder relative to his physical tools. He’s also an incredibly poor passer, garnering just one assist every four games (8 total in 32 games), and picking up six turnovers for every one assist. He has the second worst assist to turnover ratio in college basketball, and is the second worst passer per possession as well.

Looking forward, Mullens has a tough decision to make in regards to entering the draft, as he could be a lottery pick this year in what many view as a weak class, though you’d be hard pressed to find a talent evaluator who wouldn’t think Mullens clearly needs another year or two in school to develop. The only thing he does at an NBA level at this point is get open and finish at the basket on the offensive end, so it’s hard to see him contributing much to a team initially. The fact that his coach played him just 13 minutes per game in Ohio State’s three conference tournament games is telling of how far along he is as a player at this stage in his development.

Mullens isn't as ready for the NBA as Casspi is. That being said, I also feel like we still need some size, and we'll probably get it with an undrafted player for now, or someone for cheap on the market.

You beat me to it. The post-draft opinion confirms what you said, as well.

They left out a quote. "The Maloofs need money and they knew that as soon as we gave omri the #18 that the next day 2 million of those jersey's will be ordered from Israel." 2mil at $40 bucks a pop you do the math. Omri made the Maloofs after overhead at least $60 mil.

I just don't buy the part about needing to more at the SF spot. What does Omri bring that Garcia, Noc, Greene don't?

Ummm, that would be jerseys for over a quarter of the Israeli population... Israel has around 3/4 as many people as Los Angeles County.

If it worked like that, the FO needed to get us a player from a MUCH larger country. Like find some scrub from India (150x Israel's population). Even 1% of the population would be 11 million jerseys. THEN we'd be making some money.

No doubt a lot of Casspi #18 Sacramento Kings jerseys are going to be sold in Israel, but exactly how many at US$40 or more is an interesting question.

While Israel has close to 7 million people it's not a homogeneous Jewish State. Nearly 25% of the population are Arabs - not including those in the occupied West Bank territory and Gaza Strip. Also, while an advanced, developed county, Israel has a large number of people living in poverty or near poverty (usually more recent Jewish immigrants from places like Ethiopia or Arab citizens inside Israel).

Of course, in the end it's up to Casspi to solidify himself on Kings roster, and then stick in the NBA for at least a few years to really make a name with marketing of his jersey plus rest of it for fans across the globe.

Do you guys actually see Casspi getting any time behind Noc, Garcia, Greene?

I dont... unless we have some serious injuries (knock on wood. everyone)..

WE need to fix this logjam at SF and get rid of one of Garcia Or Noc. These kids need floor time and now is the time to give it to them.

I know that since were all selfobsessed with our own importance and oppinion, that its hard to believe that Geoff doesn't give a tinkers damm what we think. I'm not saying that he's disrespectful of our oppinions, I just doubt the even thinks about it.

If you get a position in the Kings front office, hook me up...

That's a virtue I've admired in many management teams. For example, when the Detroit auto industry spent decades studiously ignoring the public's desire for reliable, fuel efficient cars, that showed a lot of integrity. It gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling to see my tax dollars rescuing brilliant visionaries like that from their foolish and unappreciative ex-customers.

Reminder: No politics, no religion.

Back on the topic at hand: I think the Maloofs, Petrie and the rest of the front office do care what the fans think. After all, it's the fans who pay their hard-earned money to attend games, buy jerseys, etc. Without the fans there would be no team. Having said that, I don't believe they make their decisions based on fan consensus - especially since there are innumerable times when the fans in general do not have and never will have all the facts available to insiders.

Thanks for this input. Now I feel much better about drafting the tough player Casspi and not getting the needed back-up center in Mullens at the draft.

I just hope Petrie really gets another young and legit 7 footer to back-up Hawes at Center. IMO, we're pretty much set to develop a young player ( and a back-up ) on every position now, except the back-up center for Hawes.
