Patience level for WCS? (merged)

What is the patience level for WCS?

Do people favor him getting time? I was for him out of the rotation to start the season.. he made mention of not getting time on twitter
 
Nope. He has gotten enough chances at this level and blew it every time with his lackluster effort. I like coaching staff developing approach here. Explain their role then reward or punish based on their performances. Last time someone grabbed a rebound that he absolutely should have had (again), WCS was benched right away. Totally just. Let him prove in the practices and maybe even the D league. btw, during the last game when Bmac made a dumb defensive decision and left the man with ball resulting a score. I yelled, "Bench him, bench him" benched he was, right away. Never to play in the ball game. Enough with lazy and unsmart. People need to support Boogie, Temple and the Coaching staff in order to win.
 
I'm not sure. He's still young in terms of relative NBA age at 23 yearsold, but he's not young for a 2nd year player. When you go into the draft, drafting someone who is older with more college experience, the expectation is that they'd be more ready to contribute to the team right away. It's a gigantic disappointment that he can't see playing time at all in his 2nd year.

I always questioned his motor a lot because it was extremely inconsistent in his rookie SL. However, in his rookie year, there was no issue with motor. WCS was one of our highest energy players.

Now comes the question..... why has his motor absolutely gone to crud in his 2nd year? Is it because he's asked to play slower than Karl's pace? Is it because of his inability to understand our offense and defense? This is the part I don't get about WCS in his 2nd year. He's just not playing with the same intensity when he saw PT early in the season.
I think a lot of his flaws in his rookie year went unnoticed. Lots of people were suddenly surprised when Willie struggled to grab boards this year. He struggled on the boards last year too, but it was hidden because he played alongside Cousins. Yeah, Willie had 5.3rebs in 21mins, but only 3.3 defensive rebounds... He also showed that he was pretty much limited to what Rondo was able to create for him. Limited offensive player.

Even with the above being said, I don't think he was put in the right situation this year. He started out the season with Temple as PG off the bench. Joerger needs to play him though. This team is crap on defense, and Willie might be our only real "rim protector". Put him next to Cousins instead of Tolliver. I don't see Willie anything other than a bench big, but it doesn't mean he should be racking these DNPs. Coach has been absolute crap with his rotations and he knows it.

That's how he strikes me.. everything is a joke, he's laughing on the sideline. It's unfortunate that for me to almost have to write off a 6th pick already for being a goofball

But you win some and lose some if that's the case (although we've been losing a lot on draft picks). Just means Skal or Bogdan or both will be the truth
 
I think that considering WCS as having no motor is a misunderstanding of him. He has an unusual game (7 footer who can shut down point guards and shooting guards one-on-one), it's gotten him stuck in the NBA, and he needs to figure it out.

He was an elite player in college using agility and being quick on his feet, not what you would normally think of at that height. He needs to use his good basketball IQ to translate his game to the NBA. And he does have good basketball IQ, a 56% FG% since entering the NBA isn't a fluke. He gets it.

It's hard to be patient, but people are really underestimating WCS.

If Willie adjusts and uses his smarts he can go far with the Kings.

If he had medical problems related to the sickle cell trait, he would not have a contract to play in the NBA. If he's smoking medical marijuana, he's in violation of the NBA rules.

This to me has to be the biggest myth on the forum the guy has never shut down anyone he can't even guard stretch 4's let alone PG's/SG's. I'm not saying that he won't ever be able to do it cause he clearly has good gifts but in his brief time in the NBA he's never locked down anyone really in particular more skilled players. Draymond Green is a guy you could say that about but WCS is 100% currently not.
 
I hold out some hope that he , like most bigs, will be a late bloomer. Not to mention when Calipari went to recruit him, he was still playing football in HS.

But every single time I even think to consider giving up on him, one name pops into my head... Hassan Whiteside.

Don't give up on the big kid. Hopefully he'll turn it around. That's all I have with him right now though, hope.

Difference being WCS has logged a lot more actual NBA time than Whiteside ever did with us. It's not like Whiteside showed flashes and then completely decided to stop playing hard while calling out his coach.

Whiteside is a good big, but let's be realistic. He's an anomaly and definitely not the "standard." Not to regurgitate what you already know, but he left the NBA and ended up overseas before he finally "got it" and decided to put some real work in. It took years for this to happen.

WCS feels different somehow. His calling card is defense, but he's bad at it. Also, he doesn't complement Cousins well either (can't shoot, doesn't rebound, and can't post) so he's a one trick pony with his 1 trick being defense. His lack of rebounding is a huge concern. He consistently gets overpowered and guards simply just take the ball out of his hands when he does happen to get a rebound.

I don't want us to make the same mistake with him as we did with Ben, which is to say wait too long to trade him and watch every ounce of value disappear. To me, everyone on this roster is fair game besides Cousins and Temple.

Risk being he's a flat out bust and reward being he's everything we need him to be. I'll take that chance and stick it out with him.
 
Well we r still hanging on to McLemore. I'm guessing he has til the end of his rookie extension. But sadly we may be able to get a little more than an IT traded player exception. The NBA should definitely have rules in place to give a glimmer of light to teams that have been mismanaged for 10+ years.

He's not really a "young" big per se.... he's not 19 years old, which was supposed to be the good thing about him. He really shouldn't be this bad.
 
He's an inconsistent defense specialist who doesn't rebound, after 3 years at a major college program. I'm getting Jared Jeffries vibes, which isn't good.
 
None. The guy is pure cotton balls. Dude gets boxed out by PGs on the regular as a very athletic 7 footer. That's absolutely embarrassing. WCS is the softest NBA player I've ever seen.

There was considerable discussion on his medical condition prior to the draft, which included being limited to approx 30 minutes per game because of his condition. The Kings management obviously decided he was good enough to draft despite the limitation.
 
I can't even comprehend how unlucky we are with drafting (when we are making the "right" pick and not Jimmer). Between 2009-2011 our picks were Tyreke, Whiteside, Cousins and IT. Absolutely nailed it. Drafted a great core in consecutive picks.


Since IT, the most productive player BY FAR we drafted was Biyombo.


Gut wrenching stuff.
 
I would try to package WCS in a trade to get Dragic or another established known good guard. Someone who can get his own shot and be an option at the end of close games. Combine WCS with Collison and/or Gay and that is quite a bit of value to a team like Miami.

I'm aware of all that. I'm also convinced that there is a "fitness" clause of some kind in his contract because of his known condition. My point is that saying his problems on the court are sickle cell trait-related doesn't bear up to close scrutiny. His main problem IMHO is his apparent lack of motivation. He just never looks hungry and he never seems to be giving 100% on the court. More than once I've become frustrated with him because his main focus seems to be waiting for that highlight reel alley-oop.
