INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Pacers and the Sacramento Kings are both interested in Chuck Person to fill their head coaching jobs.

The Pacers assistant interviewed for his team's job last week, and the Kings have asked for permission to talk with him about their vacancy. The Kings job would reunite him with former Pacer Ron Artest.

Person, 42, known in his playing days as a high-scoring outside shooter nicknamed "The Rifleman," has never been interviewed for a head coaching job before.

Person, who played 13 seasons before retiring in 2000, said an interview with the Kings has not been scheduled and that he likes the team's talent. The Kings made the playoffs in 2005-2006, but fell to 32-49 this season.

"That job would be an amazing job with a ton of potential," Person said. "They've got All-Star-type players in Ron Artest and Mike Bibby. They're up and coming. And Kevin Martin is coming off a fantastic year."

Person is familiar with Artest, who had a troubled past in Indiana before being traded to Sacramento two seasons ago. Person said his experience in working with Artest would benefit him.

Person faces stiff competition for the Kings opening. The Sacramento Bee is reporting that the other candidates are Los Angeles Lakers assistant Brian Shaw, former Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy, Houston assistant Tom Thibodeau, Los Angeles Lakers assistant Kurt Rambis, New Mexico State coach Reggie Theus and former Kings assistant coach Elston

He should be immediately disqualified from the competition. He's a suck-up - he sounds like Musselman - and he's talking cheerfully about the prospect of working with Artest. GIVE ME A BREAK!

If he says the kings are "up and coming" with Artest, and Bibby than he is probally not suited for this job :D

They're all going to lie and say this is a great opportunity...which I think it is, but for reasons devoid of the talent on the roster.

What coach is going to say, "this team is a pool of crud circling the porcelain bowl. I'd be perfect for this job." It true that this team needs a lot of work, and I'd appreciate the coach who actually says it.

"straight shooting" to the media is highly over-rated.

We have another several other names for it: "loose canon", "bigmouth", "instigator", and "boogar-eating-moron" ----- to list just a few

Maybe he's just on the list as somebody actually willing to coach Artest and Bibby if we fail in our efforts to trade our turds this summer.

But he's scarcely going to endear himself to us by making the mistake of kissing *** to a squad that is generally detested in these parts.

Well, I guess I wouldn't want to play for a coach that had labeled me either a sinker/floater. One has to choose their words carefully in this situation. Back to the conversation at hand - why exactly is Person qualified more than any of the other assistants mentioned as candidates?

Not sure anybody said he was.

We appear to just be interviewing a long series of youngish NBA assistant types, most of them with experience as players. He fits those criteria, and as we're not the only ones interviewing him, most be considered a pretty good one aroudn the league. Kind of odd in that he wasn't the most cerebral of players, but man could he yap -- should have no problem communicating if nothing else.

It's not what they say, it's what they don't say. The candidate doesn't have to lie. He just says it's a great organization, Petrie's great, blah, blah. But wanting to coach Artest?! That's major suck-up material.

Probably just a leak to put presure on Indy ot hire him. Sure GP might wnat o alk o him bu I doubt he would make the short list anyway.

Seriously what do you guys expect him to say..I'd love the job but their roster sucks....would you go into your future employer and say I'd love the job but your product sucks. It's a business and he has to sell it and sell himself.

Actually, this was not exactly the way to sell youself. Its like going in for ajob interview with a company coming off a bad year, knowing that several Vps are in hot water and could well be fired soon, and stating that "I would love to work for your company to learn from VP so and so and VP so and so) (ith the two so and sos being the guys who are about to get canned.

Scary thing is, that Person might be serious, as I think he was an assistant in Indian while Artest was there and being one of the all time great yappers and ****s in league history himself, amy have seen Ron as a fellow spirit. Adn of course as a player Chuck was a pure as snow shooter who couldn't be terribly bothered with the rest of the game, so Mike looks like a friend. Then throw in a scrawny OG to remind him of former teammate Reggie Miller, not to mention big ole Brad who he may also have coached, and you might have just found the one fool in the country looking at our lineup and going "I am home!"
