Oscar Nominated Basketball Movie: Hardwood.

Tonights the Oscars. The most famed and acclaimed movie award night in all of Hollywood, yet among all the stars and all the enormous blockbusters, there is one movie that I can honestly ask everyone to see. If anyone is interested in watching basketball, playingball, coaching and just anything about our sport, I highly suggest you see Hardwood. Its nominated tonight for a short documentary (its only 30 minutes) but I have never seen anything more amazing than this.

Just a quick synopsis from NFB:

Hardwood is a personal journey by director Hubert Davis, the son of former Harlem Globetrotter Mel Davis, who explores how his father's decisions affected his life. Set against the backdrop of our country's race relations in a time of social strife, this moving film is a portrait of one African American man's ultimately successful efforts to be a good father and an example of how modern society has redefined our notion of family. Now a coach for young basketball players, Mel recalls falling in love at first sight with Hubert's mother, a white woman, at a time when racism made their union impossible, and then his subsequent marriage to a black woman and the birth of their son. Both women in Mel's life, the mothers of his two sons, speak movingly about love and betrayal, and both sons speak of the pain of their absent father and its effect on their mothers.

Elegantly structured into three chapters entitled "love," "recollection" and "redemption," Davis uses personal interviews, archival footage and home movies to delve into his father's past in the hope of finding a new direction for his own.

For the record, Mel Davis was my first and best coach, no one has influenced me more in Basketball than this man. He not only teaches you the game, but he shows you that all life is affected by "defence/offence" from school to surviving in life.

This link shows you all the free screening for the movie as well as the trailer, check it out, you won't be disappointed:
