I disagree. I don't want to be thanking the Rams for anything! Ever! Sorry, but old hatreds do not disappear when it involves the Rams.

;)

Sniff... sniff...

Seeing Steve Young throw one more pass to Jerry Rice gave me goosebumps and tears. Seeing Bill Walsh AND Eddie DeBartolo on the field at Candlestick one last time was beyond my ability to describe.

EDIT: I do have to wonder, however, why Joe Montana wasn't there.
Joe was there a few weeks ago for his. Threw a pass to Dwight Clark. "The Catch" repeated. Maybe Joe could/should have been there today again? Joe is known to be a little under the radar though these days. I ran into him a few years ago when his son was in a basketball tourny out here.

ANYWAY.. NINERS!! .500 at last. Feels good to be a Niners fan again. We'll see what happens the rest of the way but I can't wait until we add more pieces in the off-season.

I love .500 with this team. Great improvement. Baby steps, how it's supposed to be done. Now I just hope they don't tank the rest of the season. If they can finish 8-8 that would be a fantastic year for the Niners.

Nice to win, but I really don't like Nolan's conservative approach when we get a lead. Not going for the TD before the half, with all the momentum, really left the door open to lose 21-20 in the 2nd half. This has been a constant pattern with nolan this season. He has no killer instinct, and we left the door open for a gut wrenching loss. We should have put the game more out of reach. Seattle did everything to help us in the first half, and we did about everything you could do to possibly lose in the 2nd half IMO.

Red zone offense is atrocious for the most part.

Still it's nice to be at .500 at the midway point.

I agree about the 4th and inches before half.. show some sack. Nedney missed TWO inside 30 yards also.. which Nolan probably wasn't expecting.

While it was conservative, I can really understand where he was coming from. The team was feeling good. They were going to go into the locker room ahead of the Seahawks. Why risk NOT making the conversion and having the 'Hawks feel some kind of relief?

Sorry, but there's no way I'm going to gripe about this win. I agree with DocHolliday:

Baby steps, how it's supposed to be done.
nebs - Thanks for the reminder about Joe and Dwight reliving THE CATCH. I think, remembering that, it was the right decision to have Steve Young throw that one last pass to Jerry Rice. ... Ah, blast. I just gave myself goosebumps again.

Any pictures of Eddie D?

A roar from Gore
With 212 yards, he breaks 49ers' single-game rushing mark

SAN FRANCISCO-Frank Gore's best quote following Sunday's game: "Phew!"

Clinging to a six-point lead with 1:53 remaining, the 49ers gave the second-year running back a chance to secure the victory and grab the franchise's single-game rushing record. Gore instead let the ball slip from his grasp, giving the Seattle Seahawks a final opportunity to steal out of town with a last-second victory.

It was the type of hard-luck play that would have sunk recent 49ers teams, but for the third consecutive week, this year's version proved it is made of stronger stuff.

A San Francisco defense in the midst of a midseason revival took back the ball two plays later, and with 1:18 left, the coaching staff didn't hesitate to put it in Gore's hands again.

He responded with a 17-yard run that left him with a franchise-best 212 rushing yards and all but sealed a 20-14 victory.

"Our defense did a great job," Gore said. "They got the ball back. I was like, When I touch this thing again, I'm going to make it happen."

The victory was the 49ers' first against Seattle since the 2002 season, which also is the last time San Francisco had a three-game winning streak. More importantly, it placed the 49ers (5-5) one game behind the first-place Seahawks (6-4) in the NFC West and, with six games remaining, makes them a legitimate postseason contender.

"I think we gained some respect today," 49ers linebacker Brandon Moore said. "Teams are going to have to respect us now. The offense is rolling now, and they're controlling the game."

Sunday's contest was the sort of smash-mouth effort coach Mike Nolan -- nattily decked out in a black suit -- envisioned when he took over the 49ers last year.

Nolan looked at the NFC West, saw it was full of offense-oriented finesse teams and knew he could exploit them with a power-rushing attack.

That's precisely what the 49ers unleashed on Seattle, which watched as Gore broke two runs of 50 yards or more Sunday, leaving him with a gaudy 8.8-yard average.

Gore said he felt he was on his way to a 200-yard effort last week in Detroit when he was knocked out of the game with a concussion at the end of the third quarter after gaining a then-career-high 159 yards.

Sunday's effort not only placed him ahead of Charlie Garner (201 yards in 2000) as the 49ers' single-game rushing leader, it gave him 1,043 yards for the season and put him back in contention for the league's rushing crown.

"He works very hard, both in practice and in games," said Seattle linebacker Julian Peterson, a former 49er. "I know that from experience. I believe he's going to be one of the best backs in the league in the next couple of years. Gore finds little holes, and he explodes through them."

The 49ers jumped to a 20-0 halftime lead on the strength of Gore's running and three Seattle turnovers. Arnaz Battle scored the team's first receiving touchdown in three weeks with a nine-yard grab in the second quarter, and Alex Smith ran one in later in the quarter.

Peterson, who spent six years in San Francisco, returned as the Seahawks' sack leader and captain of the defense. Sunday, however, he was most notable for an encroachment penalty on the second play of the game and finished with just two tackles.

The athletic linebacker was held in check on passing plays by left tackle Jonas Jennings, who with left guard Larry Allen opened Gore's biggest running lanes. The jumbo duo also seemed to take particular pleasure shoving Peterson and the rest of the Seahawks' defenders around the field.

"For three straight weeks, it's been fun," Jennings said. "It's always fun when you win and the coach puts it on your shoulders."

Way to go, Gore!!!

Forty F#&kin' Niners!!

Any pictures of Eddie D?

Sorry, didn't think to bring a camera. I just finished watching the telecast of the game. I'm really disappointed none of the bay area news stations showed Jerry's ceremony. Hopefully it'll make CSN's weekly show, or the NFL channel.

It was GREAT to see BILL WALSH there. I was worried he couldn't for health reasons. He looked pretty good. It was also great to see George Siefert there. I've always felt he didn't get the credit he deserved as a coach.

The crowd went NUTS for Eddie, who waived and blew kisses to the fans. He was with Carmen Policy, which just seems really weird, all things considered.

There were two very long and loud BOOS for the York's, no doubt because of the stadium announcement. (Eddie seemed to enjoy it!) :p

I suspect Joe was either hiding in the Stadium Club or opted to stay away. He is the only person whose presence could overshadow Jerry's, so I could see him keeping a low profile.

I was very proud of the "Faithful" today. They were really into the game and extremely loud! You really couldn't tell that from the TV feed. (Even Bibbylicious, between ear searing whistle blasts, noted how loud it was. I'm really glad I was there today!:D

Thanks for the first-hand report. The idea of Eddie D being there really went over well with me. First, so he could get the applause of the fans - which I'm really glad he got - and so York could see how a beloved owner is treated. (Yes, I know it's petty but I don't care...)

There are some parallels we could draw between the Kings and the 49ers, but I hope it never becomes reality. Every time someone complains about the Maloofs, I'm really tempted to point at the whole Eddie D scenario. People need to appreciate the Maloofs because should something horrible happen we could end up with someone like John York. Blech, blech, blech...

Glad to hear Bibbylicious can split ear drums in multiple venues, BTW.

:)

I'm really glad that the 49ers held on to pull out the win! It got a lot tighter than I'd have liked during that second half, but it is great that the D was able to hold. Unlike the Kings defense in the past few games, the Niners D is looking very nice! ^.^ This weekend will be a great game, and I'm looking forward to Gore getting some T.D.s this week to go with his big yards as we dominate the St. Louis Lambs!!! Go Niners!

I actually woke up early and couldn't sleep because I was thinking about this 49ers-Rams game.

It's been a while since I could say that about the Niners.

SLAB

Hall of Famer
Mike Nolan's lack of a killer instinct is ridiculous.

4th on less than an inch, and you kick the feld goal...If you dont make it, they still have to drive the entire length of the field...But no, we went with the whole BS "Play it safe" route.

Nolan's safe play hasn't gotten to me earlier than this, but it's been a habit...Our defense is not good enough yet to trust it to win the game for us...They had played so far over their heads the past few...It's going to bite hin in the arse more than it saves him...He needs to learn...And hopefully he learned the hard way today.

Statistically maybe that was the right decision? The D had been playing well in the second half.

But most of us watching just KNEW the Rams would score a TD. Murphy's law or something.

4th and half a chain link? Grr.

Really disappointed once again that Nolan gave them a chance to win by being too conservative.

This is definitely been a habit of his of playing to not lose instead of playing to win.

I'm still disappointed by that call and feel it was a mistake that cost us the game... but after thinking about it for a while, the Niners today showed that they're still a young team and not ready to win a game like this. Losing in the fashion they did maybe even was a good experience to go through.

They made young team mistakes at critical times. The fumble leading to the Ram's TD, penalties (notably the delay of game), missed tackles that would have snuffed out that last Rams drive before it even got started. That and the fact that our offense is entirely too one sided.

I was beginning to buy into the hype a little last week, but let's keep in mind that this is still a very young team who perhaps was playing a bit over its head. We're not ready yet and can learn from this.

And Nolan, you can learn too... 4th and 1cm.. GO FOR IT. :)

I think Nolan still feels burned by the two 4th and 1 plays he went for against the Raiders and lost.

Yeah, we're not going to the Superbowl this year.;)

The players didn't lose this game today, Nolan did. On 4th and less than an Inch on the 5 yard line, when you've had as much success running as they had, you go for it. If you don't get it you leave them on their own 5 yard line.

I feel the Niners would have scored, maybe not on the very next play, but they would have scored. Horribly conservative decision by Nolan.

It is really a tough call. If they go for it and dont get it, all the Rams have to do is hit a field goal. In terms of field position, you are better off hitting the field goal and making them go 80 yards to the end zone, instead of making them go 50 yards to be in FG range. That said, the Rams running D was rediculously pourous on that last drive and the Niners more than likely would have no problem punching through it for a TD. Oh well, at least it wasn't a blow out. It was definately the Niners game to lose.

Fans are always going to want to go for it, and I think that would have been the right call... I mean it was like 4th and a centimeter. He trusted that his defense would hold, in my heart I knew they probably wouldn't. Ever since the 49ers failed on those to 4th and shorts against the Raiders, Nolan has played it conservative in those situations. Against Seattle it seemed to work, today it didn't. But I have to say, I really like the direction the team is heading and maybe this will be a learning process for Nolan too. As far as personel goes he and his coaches are doing an insanely good job of judging talent. I agree his in-game decisions need some work, but I also think he has shown the ability to adapt and change his schemes and philosophy, he's been doing it all year...

I definitely don't say go for it all the time, but they definitely should have on that drive. I don't down the niners defense. They have been playing good, but Jackson is a beast, and they do have some good receivers and a decent quarterback.

I just felt that the niners would have scored within a few plays down there, and then the most the Rams could have done was tied the game with a touchdown and a 2 point conversion.

I have to agree with those who think we definitely should have gone for it. Sometimes you have to gamble just a little...and this is something Nolan just doesn't seem too willing to do. At some point, you have to wonder if players are going to start doubting themselves in those situations.

this game really hurts... We had the game in our pocket, but we let it slip away and although everyone points to the 4th down and an inch we didn't go for I think our loss was actually the total outcome of many plays. Including that 4th down play other plays where things went wrong were: Antonio Bryant's holding on big runs, Hudson and the delay of game, Arnaz Battle fumbling a punt and leading to the Rams first TD. A bunch of dumb mistakes cost us the game we should have easily won.

At least we're getting to the point where we expect to win games now, and that's nice. Still, I would have liked a win just as much as everyone else.
It seems that Nolan has been awfully conservative this year. While it leads to situations like yesterday, overall it seems to have helped the team grow.
Although, what do I know? I'm getting most of the Niner information second hand, living here on the east coast.
