SAN FRANCISCO-Frank Gore's best quote following Sunday's game: "Phew!"
Clinging to a six-point lead with 1:53 remaining, the 49ers gave the second-year running back a chance to secure the victory and grab the franchise's single-game rushing record. Gore instead let the ball slip from his grasp, giving the Seattle Seahawks a final opportunity to steal out of town with a last-second victory.
It was the type of hard-luck play that would have sunk recent 49ers teams, but for the third consecutive week, this year's version proved it is made of stronger stuff.
A San Francisco defense in the midst of a midseason revival took back the ball two plays later, and with 1:18 left, the coaching staff didn't hesitate to put it in Gore's hands again.
He responded with a 17-yard run that left him with a franchise-best 212 rushing yards and all but sealed a 20-14 victory.
"Our defense did a great job," Gore said. "They got the ball back. I was like, When I touch this thing again, I'm going to make it happen."
The victory was the 49ers' first against Seattle since the 2002 season, which also is the last time San Francisco had a three-game winning streak. More importantly, it placed the 49ers (5-5) one game behind the first-place Seahawks (6-4) in the NFC West and, with six games remaining, makes them a legitimate postseason contender.
"I think we gained some respect today," 49ers linebacker Brandon Moore said. "Teams are going to have to respect us now. The offense is rolling now, and they're controlling the game."
Sunday's contest was the sort of smash-mouth effort coach Mike Nolan -- nattily decked out in a black suit -- envisioned when he took over the 49ers last year.
Nolan looked at the NFC West, saw it was full of offense-oriented finesse teams and knew he could exploit them with a power-rushing attack.
That's precisely what the 49ers unleashed on Seattle, which watched as Gore broke two runs of 50 yards or more Sunday, leaving him with a gaudy 8.8-yard average.
Gore said he felt he was on his way to a 200-yard effort last week in Detroit when he was knocked out of the game with a concussion at the end of the third quarter after gaining a then-career-high 159 yards.
Sunday's effort not only placed him ahead of Charlie Garner (201 yards in 2000) as the 49ers' single-game rushing leader, it gave him 1,043 yards for the season and put him back in contention for the league's rushing crown.
"He works very hard, both in practice and in games," said Seattle linebacker Julian Peterson, a former 49er. "I know that from experience. I believe he's going to be one of the best backs in the league in the next couple of years. Gore finds little holes, and he explodes through them."
The 49ers jumped to a 20-0 halftime lead on the strength of Gore's running and three Seattle turnovers. Arnaz Battle scored the team's first receiving touchdown in three weeks with a nine-yard grab in the second quarter, and Alex Smith ran one in later in the quarter.
Peterson, who spent six years in San Francisco, returned as the Seahawks' sack leader and captain of the defense. Sunday, however, he was most notable for an encroachment penalty on the second play of the game and finished with just two tackles.
The athletic linebacker was held in check on passing plays by left tackle Jonas Jennings, who with left guard Larry Allen opened Gore's biggest running lanes. The jumbo duo also seemed to take particular pleasure shoving Peterson and the rest of the Seahawks' defenders around the field.
"For three straight weeks, it's been fun," Jennings said. "It's always fun when you win and the coach puts it on your shoulders."
